I am actually learning from Practical Mental Magic and 13 Steps now. Although I would love to own these DVD's I do have some misgivings about them being made available and enlightening those folks that are passing the books by.

One of the interesting things Richard points out throughout the series is how often times the "improvements" are often a step backwards from the original. Don't get me wrong, Richard is always examining his mentalism and magic and seeing if it can be made better but often times in trying to improve something, the beauty of the original is lost. Also, because we are thinking like magicians we sometimes work out new methods that lose the simplicity, straightforwardness, and genius of the earlier original methods. It IS wise and prudent to see if we can improve the classics but we have to take an HONEST look to see if our improvements really ARE improvements.
You will love this series... just great. I watched it again this weekend. Extremely strong. Tim Trono |

Hi David. It's a good question but it truly pertains to all of magic - not just mentalism - it all takes dedication, a true look at oneself, practice, thought, ability to be open to criticism, study of performance, study of the background, appreciation for those who lay the groundwork, etc. What REALLY stands out after SEEING this set though is some incredibly important lessons which are 1) that often times we try to improve some of the classics but we have to be open and honest and truly see whether what we are doing is an improvement or a step back (often it is the later - and by this is does NOT mean we should not TRY to improve or excel) and 2) although we are often looking for the newest and greatest - in fact many many of the best routines and thinking are from years ago and buried in books, manuscripts or old videos. This will hopefully inspire many to putt some time and effort of our own to explore for these hidden treasures. Along the way in imparting this valuable information, Richard DEMONSTRATES this by SHOWING some of the mental masterpieces many many have overlooked. He also REALLY UNDERSTANDS mentalism and is thus a great teacher. So much of what I have been exposed to in mentalism (of course it is not my primary course of interest) is rather convoluted. Richard understands and imparts how important it is for direct in effect piece. He shows that although a method can be simplistic and uncluttered it can be extremely deceptive. He makes mentalism look like it would if you could really do it. And he does this with some pieces by Koran, Hoy, Annemann, etc. that are often overlooked. Maybe the "Easy to Master" brand will bother some but it should NOT cloud the importance of this series... it DOES make learning GOOD mentalism EASIER because of the lessons taught, the clear effects taught, and the teaching style put forth. I can assure you that it does not at all ***ize mentalism, but in my case, as an example provides a newfound respect for mentalism. While I understand and appreciate your concern I hope you or others will not overlook this series because of the title line. Richard and L&L have done a true service to mentalism with this series. It provides lessons, thinking, and effects we should all aspire to. It does make learning mentalism "easier" and better.

I hope Mr. Osterlind's new DVd series in this vein is the beginning of a trend. It kind of reminds me of how every few years the new generation of the day "rediscovers" the great musical legends like Sinatra etc.

Somthing I found from Corinda is that though a lot of people will often cry outdated due to the patter I often thing that it is the period patter that makes the setting, the storys added to the effects in Corinda are Wonderful I think, even just reading them transports me back to the times of these pieces, suc as a spookey early 20th centuary drawing room at the start of the seance.
Some of the storys are 90 percent patter which enthralls the audience and the effect or revelation at the end is what shocks. I am very eger to see what spin Mr Osterlind puts on these time honered pieces, and will they be available before christmas is te burning question,if they are I'll save them for christmas day H.W

I second Mr Trono.
Have you ever looked at the credits after your DVDs? Well,... Tim Trono is the man! (check the credits to see what I mean) I've learned from classics as Corinda and Annemann, and honestly, I have always wished to see how the effects in there would play in the hands of great performers as Osterlind, Maven and Banachek. Well, This is my chance! I'm pretty sure that, as an amateur mentalist (if I can call myself a mentalist at all), I won't be dissapointed. The Easy To Master Series have always proved to be a great teaching source, and the fact that Mr Osterlind is behind these series, makes it even more appealing to someone like me! I really can't wait to see these! Juan D PS : I'm sorry If I sound too excited , but this have turned to be my most expected release ever! |

The name "Easy to Master Mental Miracles" should not be construed to mean "Watch These and Go Out and Do Them the next Day!" They will require some serious thought and practice, of course. It's not that the mechanics are very difficult, it's the frame of mind.
I get a lot of PM's and emails. A lot of them ask me questions like, "Doesn't anyone suspect ... this or that?" or "How can you get away with that?" When I arranged to do these videos I thought that here is my chance to really talk about the mental state you need to be in to do mentalism. If you're not that familiar with this art hopefully these videos will give you direction as to the "attitude" necessary to perform. So many items are bold and would be totally transparent without this proper state of mind. I tried to talk about this constantly during the shoot. And, as I have already said, I tried to take my own personal preferences out of the equation and attempted to perform the material "straight". For instance, I really don't believe in hidden pre-show work, but that is my own opinion. So I did do one effect using hidden pre-show work, but tried to explain how it should be done and the context that it works best in. To say I am nervous about the response would be an understatement. I am not worried about those who might say that I am giving away too much. They forget when they knew nothing and had to learn somewhere. Instead, I am just worried about my performance and doing justice to some of the finest mentalism ever created. I am hoping that even if you see some flaws, you will say, "Hey, that is really cool and I can do it even better than Osterlind!" As far as the release date, even I don't know that for sure. But I have a feeling it won't be too long! Richard |

In fact, mastering a trick is the easy part, so I don't have a quibble with the title. Mastering the performance is a whole 'nuther thing, as they say in Texas. And it's the explanation phase of Richard's first set of DVDs I enjoyed the most because he and Jim Sisti discussed so much of the performance aspect. There are few people (real professionals, I mean) I've ever spoken to or read in print who stated or hinted that a good performance is easy to master. If any ever do, look for the pitcher of Koolaide, because that invariably comes next. John LeBlanc |
