I am working on am effect where I show a small goblet. It belong to king Brian, king of the leprechauns I tell. I show it empty and then Dump it upside down and either Gold coins or Gold dust will pour out. My question is, in your opinions, Which is the best to use of the two???

gold dust as you could make a story about a leprechaun making money and all he got was pixie dust

use both so it seems like the coins are still forming out of the dust.

Remember, coins will be much easier to clean up! But I do like the idea os using both. So that when you empty it out, some coins and dust come out too. Makes it just a little more magical, like the coins came from the dust.

Why not both.
Start out with the gold coins. Weave your story and have the coins turn to dust. (gold or worthless dust) Harris

Now I'm curious . . . where can I get something that looks convincingly like gold dust? I imagine something like powdered mica or pyrite would have such an appearance, but where to come by it I know not . . .

Also, remember that the sound of the coins will be an attention grabber as well, not to mention easier to clean than the "dust".
The leprechaun gold, I always though was supposed to be real, hence the tricks about getting them to tell true. Fairy gold, on the other hand, was the result of a glamour, or illusion If you will. The tale of the young man who caught the Leprechaun, but had no shovel, so made the wee man tie a ribbon around the weed marking the pot, and promise not to move it or change it. The young man goes home for a shovel, and when he returns, every weed in the meadow now has a ribbon on it! If going for Fairy and changeable coin....think about what would be used for the "Coin Illusion". Various stories and tales tell of people being given a stack of bills by the fey folk only later to have a pocket full of leaves. Coins could be made from small flat stones Kay

Of course you could always sell the dust as a BOR item, much the way disney does for pixie dust, so I would use both.
