Yeah, we have got to read this book in my LA class. Has anyone else read this? What do you think of it?

Read it. Read it again. There was a movie made a bit ago. I don't remember the name...And that's good. So read it. I enjoyed it wonderful.
Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly,
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy; The way into my parlour is up a winding stair, And I've a many curious things to show when you are there. Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain, For who goes up your winding stair -can ne'er come down again. |

I thought this was a great book.
The book is from the viewpoint of the main character, Charlie, a mentally retarded individual who is barely able to write his diary entries. The chapters start of with lots of misspelled words and simple prose. As a result of a scientific innovation, Charlie’s intelligence gradually increases until he is a towering genius who has to simplify his explanations so that the scientists who improved his mind can understand him. Throughout this part of the book, his prose gradually increases in complexity. Algernon is a research mouse that got the same treatment as Charlie, but before Charlie. What later happens to Algernon is prophetic as to what will happen to Charlie. The book has a sad ending, but I won’t spoil it. The book combines science fiction, social commentary, and a great story. I read this book when I was fairly young, perhaps 13 or 14 years old. Many years later I read it again. I want to read it again now.
Humans make life so interesting. Do you know that in a universe so full of wonders, they have managed to create boredom. Quite astonishing.

I read that many moons ago. I liked it.
I can't imagine what it would be like to be a genius and have that gift be taken away. Not only that, but remember being smart, but not remembering how. Perplexing.

This is considered by many to be one of the greatest SF stories ever written (I have it in one my "World's Greates Sci-fi" collections where the stories were voted on by fans at world conventions). A great read well worth the time put into it.

I believe the movie was called Charly and starred Cliff Robertson.
