Hello everybody, how are you? Let me tell you that I'm new in this section of the forum, I do really like manipulation, and I was going thru the McBrides Video "World Class Manipulation" volume 2, When I started to practise billiard ball manipulation I had a problem and I was wondering if you could posibly help me.
When I have in my hands more than two balls, always when I'm rolling those balls at least one falls out of my finger. What can I do to practise this move and performe it better? Another thing, What kind of excersises must I do for my fingers? I hope you can help me with this. Thank you for your time MAGO68

Just keep practicing!
That's pretty much all you can do. But, Mcride does have some good exercises on vol.3, but all the manipulation are more difficult. I reccomend getting vol. 1. Have fun!

I do several hand/finger exercises before I start practicing. Each are designed to stretch and build strength. Basically, warm up the hands before you start working them.
In addition, Robert is right, just keep practicing. It takes time. As they say, Rome wasn't built in a day (but I wasn't in charge of that job). Steven

I would recomend two things, first can you do the ball roll round and round your hand you need to be able to roll it round the little finger so it passes underneath and over top this is an excellent excercise for getting your fingers nimble I think it is the first thing that Jeff teaches on volume one it takes time but keep at if you cant, practice the move while holding the ball in place with one finger of the other hand untill you start to get the muscle memory.
Second get four solid balls and put them between your fingers, no manipulation just hold the balls strech the joints build the muscle, it seems difficult at first and progress is slow but it will all happen for you all of a sudden Good Luck and don't give up Stephen |

Remember a long time ago when you were first learning to write? Well, this is the exact same thing. You have to get used to the procedures and making diferent kinds of moves, and once you've done it for a while it becomes second nature.

It all has to do with finger placement. If the fingers are placed wrong on a ball it will slip off once it is rolled. Try to remember that the ball changes it's contact point throught the roll. If you do drop one try to catch it on your foot (ala hacky sack)

"Slow is fast enough," my music teacher always would say to me. When we see someone during a great manipulation at full speed that's what we try to do, at full speed and its the wrong thing to do. When you do something very slowly you really truly know what's going on.

A few tips when starting out with ball manipulation:
Start with smaller balls to master the movements and build confidence. I started with 1 5/8 inch, then moved to 1 3/4 inch and later to 2 inch. Getting balls with a good grip is paramount. This means either Bond Lee, Florian Zimmer or Approach China balls (see this thread): http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=10 In spite of manipulation tradition to the contrary, it is not necessary to do a routine with 4 or more solid balls, nor is it necessary to hold four balls at a time in one hand (or 3 balls and a shell), nor is it necessary to use 2 inch balls or larger. A very satisfying routine can be done with 2 balls and 2 shells. Balls appear and vanish equally from both hands and there never need be more than two balls and one shell in any hand at any given time. Such a routine can be just as impactful as when more balls are used, and much less taxing on the hands. To optimize the "grippiness" of silicone balls for manipulation, I have found that they should be washed in a solution of Dawn dishwashing liquid and hot water after every practice or before every performance. The "grippiness" of high grip silicone balls is compromised very quickly with use because the surface is a magnet to dust, fibers, particulate matter and skin oils. |
