In the US I don't think it's any more odd for someone to be carrying around poker chips than some foreign money, and an old half dollar. Both are odd, but perfectly acceptable in a performance context.

If you set the stage with your character and words, the props you use will be appropriate.

Is it me or my computer? The Asher page doesn't seem to have any prompt for me to buy it.

To creators out there, I ask you to read this sort of thing carefully. One might also check out some of Richard Kaufman's ideas on the Genii "3fly" thread.
I ask you to stop giving your works to the population at large. Let's see how many people like the one directly above me survive the winter. Then again, since some people want to believe that ideas belong to everybody, he shouldn't have any problem, right? |

I have been following this post with great interest.
I have come to this conculusion. There use to be HONOR among thieves, but not anymore. Jon, even if you are the original creator of Three-Fly, and I believe you are, there are too many crooks...I mean cooks stirring the pot. lo key |

I received "Three Stylin" this week and it is excellent. The different colored chips really CRYSTALLIZE the vanish and appearance of EACH item instead of the typically 3 Fly with three similar objects.  It really nails home the EXACT effect by pinpointing which of the 3 objects is vanishing and reappearing at precisely the moment it happens.Â
Poker chips are something we can all relate to and may even have an advantage over some of the older coins used in many 3 Fly routines - many people are unfamiliar with various older coins. The manuscript is very thorough and Lee did a superb job on the production. It's a bargain and a must have for any 3 Fly fanatics like myself. Excellent job and highly recommended. Tim Trono |

I just got 3 Stylin', and my review is more mixed.
What Lee brings to the table is the visibility of the chips, which also score points for being real objects. (They also handle silently.) They are colored and as large as silver dollars (slightly larger), so they are very visible. The handling is easy. It is similar to Paul Wilson's "Crowded Coins," even borrowing the first phase. The booklet is professionally produced and very well illustrated and written. The downside is that you do not begin or end clean, nor is there any instruction as to how to do so. I believe that convincing the audience of the existence of only 3 objects is key to making the effect strong. You are told to ditch the extra chip via "your favorite method." I really loathe this sort of shortcut. Many of those who buy this are doing so because they don't have a favorite method. At the very least the person selling the product owes it to us to tell us what his method is. There is no patter supplied, nor any suggestion of possible presentations. |

There is no patter supplied, nor any suggestion of possible presentations. Is that a good or a bad thing in your opinion. Playing Devil's Advocate for a moment. You mention "Your favorite method" as being shortcut. Perhaps the author does not wish to spoon feed the reader. In other words he's asking you to "think" about the effect and not just mimic what he's doing. Just a thought, DVA |

The majority of the version of Three Fly out there, from Kenner's original, to Kohler's Ultimate, do not leave you clean. Given the fact that this is a standard component of these routines, it is not really a downside to Lee's specifically.
When some people use the "your favorite method" line, it is sometimes because they may ditch the extra piece in different ways, depending on the environment. As dealing with extra coins or extra gaffs is such a basic part of coin work, referring to the use of a favorite method in such conditions, I think, is normal. Just my thoughts. |

From the first publication of the trick, a full discussion of how to manage the last coin/chip/whatever has been lacking.
Perhaps Chris Kenner would care to discuss his disposition of the last coin.. which does leave him with an empty hand to show the startled and amazed audience. Some options have been provided by Bob Kohler and Bob Fitch.

DVA --If the author didn't want me to mimic him, the easiest way to prevent that would be to stop selling his routine and not to publish it.
By selling a routine you are by definition "spoon feeding." By selling it to me, you are giving it to me. A better way to prevent mimicry or "spoon feeding" is to provide a variety of options, whether for ditching the extra coin/chip, or patter possibilities. Rather than stifle creativity, these suggestions encourage it. As Jonathan has so aptly said, the last coin is the key to the whole routine. I believe that getting into the routine smoothly is also crucial. The last chip is not the place to wimp out, but the place where the author ought to show he has successfully thought out every aspect of the routine, particularly the troublesome ending. |

Jonathan,
Though I agree with and understand your position on this subject. I think staking claim to and I qoute "If you display one or more *whatevers*, display them openly in/on one hand and without closing your hands or apparently hiding the one or more *whatevers*, they jump to your other hand... one or more *whatevers* at a time, most likely a variation of my trick." This effect seems to have been done some 30 years before you were born using a silk. Will you manuscript include credits to the orginator? whom I will not mention here (just to make your job abit more diffficult) Claiming credit for "whatevers doing whatever" seems silly and jevenile at the least. I agree with your position, but that issue is for you and Kenner to work out. Kenner published his effect and gave other people the rights to perform it, and therefore create variations of said routine. Which from what I understand is only vaguely similiar to your effect. Please release your effect to the magic community as this will allow you to get credit where credit is due and also allow you to make abit of money from the effect Kenner made world famous for you. Remember you dissapeared from the magic seen and without Kenner you would not be the "underground" Legend you have become and sales of your manuscript would not benefit the way I am sure they will. I Personnally cant wait to read the original work on this effect. Good Luck, Shane |

I think Lee makes a great contribution with Three Stylin. I know it has inspired myself and others to work out our own handlings using some of Lee's basic "path". I think the idea of the chips (also used in an unpublished routine also by Norman Beck and credited as such by Lee) is excellent... it DOES differ from some of the international 3 Fly Effects in an important way... often with those the emphasis will be on the uniqueness of the different coins by the performer (or the uniqueness of the coins will call attention to themselves). I personally feel this can distract from the effect. By using the chips there is not a tremendous focus put on the chips as they are rather mundane BUT the different colors really focuses the precise moment of the effect and pinpoints the exact effect in the spectators mind. In other words, it just makes it clearer. Instead of seeing one of a "bunch" of coins travel across they see the EXACT coin travel. If you have not purchased this it may not make sense but I can assure you if you are a 3 Fly fan, Three Stylin is well worth your time and effort.
I also think Lee realizes that one does not have to ditch the extra coin if you can create enough conviction. I have worked out a handling where I do not ditch it but can assure you you will not know where it is using a count I came up with some time ago. I remember seeing a few "names" use Kenner's 3 Fly when it was released and thinking it was one of the most magical things I had ever seen and they were NOT ending clean (though Chris does have a way to do this yet unpublished though very clever).
