I found this site and it is incredible. Maybe I am spoiled from the old Compuserve days, but I have no realistic way to keep up with the traffic. Would you be interested in my working with you to develop an offline reader for registered members?

The navigation of the site is very, very difficult, with a major and a minor problem.

Minor problem: from deep within a thread, there is no link back to the "dining room" menu. Instead you click on home and then go back into dining room. There are some places with a dining room link at the bottom, but lots without.

Major problem: A typical computer-background person is used to thread reading, either in a one pass or two pass system. In a one pass system, the user starts up a program, called let's say My Reader. My Reader goes out to Magic Café, with the users login info, and downloads every new unread message available, then disconnects from Magic Café. The user reads the messages at his/her leisure, either grouping them by thread or date order, typically by thread. The user can reply within the My Reader program, and that reply goes into an outbox until the next connection. In a two pass system, My reader then connects a second time to post replies.

A variation on this is to allow the user a look at all the thread titles, and he/she can mark the ones to be downloaded.

Note that the threads are kept intact, and the user gets a concise way to read all new posts -- an impossibility with any standard web system. Compuserve recently switched internal formats and broke the ability to use so-called Off Line Readers (OLR) in an attempt to move from computer oriented users to more of an AOL type environment. Over 30,000 members cancelled their accounts. Since Compuserve's forums are now not that important to them, this was fine with them.

Bottom line -- an OLR is essential to any threaded message system with significant traffic. I would post numerous messages that way. If you are interested let me know.

Thanks

OK, since I got no response to this, I would settle for a "Read all posts since last visit" button maybe?

Anybody listening?

Thanks

Tuvia, the red mugs you see next to each topic tell you there are posts that have either not been read or received since your last visit.

How in the world, with all respect, does that help me? I can also search for all posts within the last 24 hours if I wish. The _volume_ is too great to do that in any one sitting, not to mention the dragginess on a Web site of having to click all around, back to the topics, into the topic, back and forth pages within a topic.

Look an almost any thread message site. Look at even Penguin Magic's board, which at least has a since last visit button. That works OK for them because the traffic level is not that high. On a high volume site, even that is no good, let alone red cups.

I did not even mention the fact that unless you start a topic, you cannot flag it for notifications when new messages come in.

Were you being sarcastic, perhaps?

Thanks,

Tuvia

Minor problem isn't really a problem. The Café logo at the top left is visible from all except the "printer-friendly" pages here. It is linked to the forum index, which you refer to as the "dining room" menu.

I can't comment one way or another on the offline reading system "problem", since I've never used anything like that. Implementing something like that would be up to the owner of this site, Steve Brooks.

My apologies for not seeing that myself. It's in an unusual location, but it is plainly visible.

Please do not get me wrong. This site is great, but the traffic absolutely requires some sort of reader. I would be happy to give Mr. Brooks, yourself, or any interested parties a demo on how an offline reader works.

Also note I am not proposing this as any kind of self-promotion or attempt at anything to produce income or any results for myself except easier reading. I would be happy to help and allow the site full control.

How can I get Mr. Brooks to entertain this discussion?

Thanks
