“I found myself developing an analytical mind-set, able to spot the loopholes in anyone's argument very quickly”.
- how can I develop this? |

I said this came from studying Law, so you could always try that. Or just become irritatingly pedantic, which is another way of expressing it.
I wouldn't get hung up on it, as I suspect it's either innate or is learnt from working in a field which promotes detachment and constant questioning or searching for these sorts of lacunae, to use an annoying word. Perhaps if you try not believing anything anyone tells you for a while and just muse instead on how their opinion might fit into a bigger picture, it might work; but you might lose all your friends and family in the process. If you do get hung up on it, you will find that people almost never say exactly what they mean. We all get used to a certain amount of interpretation. Miscommunication grows out of those times when interpretations are not the same. (You say "Tomato" I say "Spiney Norman".)
I had a teacher in 7th grade who had a pet peeve about incorrect signage. Stuff like "Bobs' House of Pancakes" when there was only one Bob. Once you start to notice it, it becomes rampant in your mind. Bad signage grammar is everywhere. Almost makes you want to stop the car and rant to the owner. Almost. Then there are the signs where the people just didn't really think... or did they. My favorite is an old sign painted on the side of an Oakland building for a long since gone Linomleum shop called "Linoleum Dick's". To make a long post longer, it is a matter of holding people to the specifics of their words which, as mentioned, is a very annoying habit. For instance you asked, "how can I develop this?" Well, you can't. It has already been developed. What you are meaning to ask is "How can I learn this?" See, I bet everyone who reads that is going to feel at least a twinge of distaste for the "overly" analitical nature of that statement. And now you should be excited that I made a huge mistake by saying "everyone" and not modifying it. Certainly we can agree that not every single person that reads this will feel distaste. Or maybe, you offer to find the person who is totally disinterested and devoid of emotional interest in the words but read them anyway. And there you go. The analyticals begin the dance. Now, it does serve the wonderful purpose of making one's own words be that much more exacting so your "defense" is in place and you are saying what you intend. Even then we can all be prone to a lax in this, and be certain that there will usually be someone around to catch us at it. Cheers, Tom |

I recently read a book called Intelligent Memory that is a good start for learning about critical analysis skills. Also, any book on scientific research and design will probably make you very analytical and objective as opposed to accepting and subjective.
