One thing to keep in mind is that a lot of what some people might think of as "fluff" can be used to greatly enhance an existing routine. For instance, in Apocalypse 1 there's a couple of things with dice that I think most people would consider useless... except for somebody who already does an existing routine with dice, and knows exactly how to incorporate it in there to put that much extra value into his performance. Not everybody does a ring and string routine, so of course those entries might seem like fluff to them, but for somebody who does do such a routine, seeing these immediately broadens the available pool of phases and allows him to switch things up. Ditto the coin matrix. Ditto so many other things.
And that's only focusing on the "fluff". These things that might be just fluff to others actually make this a unique resource. Each bound volume of Apocalypse has close to 500 items in them, running the gamut from full routines to small items that can help round out an existing routine.

The "laughs" I refer to have nothing to do with Collected Almanac. It's a great book. Hey, Richard will probably tell you that I taught him how to write, so I sure "ain't" about to knock any of his stuff. No, the laughs are from david whitehead. His "opinion" sure helps no one, because it is so WRONG. (That's MY opinion.) I mean, someone actually thanked him. Now THAT'S funny.
Ixnay goes without saying. He has never said a kind word in my direction. And, that's okay. Those in the know know to believe just the opposite of what he spouts. He's SO obvious. I don't recollect what stevenmills (Sam) is talking about, but in most instances, it is deserved. What's most bothersome, and what is causing me to get a bit thin skinned, are those few (the ones giving me those laughs) who feel that they are so entitled to their opinions, but that OTHERS ARE NOT. You know, don't you, that Mr. Whitehead is going to get all up in arms because I'm stating publicly (as did he) that he has absolutely no concept of what he's talking about. MY OPINION, folks. My suggestion to the few, like the person who thanked whitehead, is to find the threads here that talk about APOCALYPSE and tell you that it is absolutely one of the best buys in magic, even with ALL THAT FLUFF. (I'd love the above to give us all examples OF FLUFF in just about any of my writings.) Okay; I feel better now. HARRY LORAYNE.

Thanks Vlad... To be clear, I wasn't trying to make anybody change their mind. Everybody's allowed their opinions. There's plenty in Apocalypse that I can't use, for instance, but with around 2000 items, that's to be expected. That said, if I didn't have to choose between buying magic and eating, I'd have the entire set in a heartbeat, especially with #2 having just been reprinted... sigh...
(...and Triumph routines, and one coin routines, and Spellbound routines, and...)

Hey Gilgamesh: I am glad you're a fan, really. However, if it's okay with you, I'll get offended when I THINK I should get offended, when I FEEL I should get offended, when I WANT to get offended - and hopefully, that won't offend you, as it seems to have done. Yes, I can afford to chill out WHEN I FEEL LIKE DOING SO, not when it makes you happy. And, IN MY OPINION, I had every right to get offended by the post or two above. And yes, a few, VERY FEW, have mentioned it - a thousand percent more have said - "Atta boy, Harry, it's about time someone told these people off." So, my friend, it boils down to my choice, certainly not yours. Regards - HARRY LORAYNE.

Harry,
It certainly is your choice so don't let me influence you. However, if you feel yourself getting too stressed by the utterings of others you could benefit from reading my book Chill Out 1 ( How to not be wound up by people with half your talent) available from all good booksellers and yours truly. I'm in the middle of compiling Chill Out 2 ( Those idjits, what do they know). Drop me a note of your email address and I'll put you on my mailing list. Regards - Mike. |

Appreciate it, Mike, but no thanks. I'm old enough and experienced enough to know when to chill out. Truth of course is that I'm not always right, and I know it. Friends always tell me that that's what turns some of those who offend me on - getting a reaction from me. I understand that - it makes some small people feel bigger, but on the other hand, I like to let off a bit of steam every so often. HARRY L.

Wow, I wrote that almost 4 years ago. I do like Apocolypse, I just liked the material in Richard's Almanac more. There's a great 4 Ace trick with a card to wallet transpo by Peter Kane I believe that's one of my favorite items. I became a Jay Sankey fan at the time based on his one man issues in the Almanac too. Just one small person's opinion of course.

Come on Mr. Lorayne, even though I have a copy, I would buy another if you decide to reprint it! Seriously. A GREAT book that needs to be on every magician's shelf (actually NOT on the shelf but on your practice table)! As I said in another thread, Sol Stone's Linking Links ALONE is worth the price of admission. Sure, part of me wants to keep the treasures to myself, but, the larger part of me that loves the Art and wants to see the classics available to ALL who are serious, would like to see it out there. I recently performed Drawing Conclusions (Max Maven) from this book. Got an amazing reaction! That's just one of hundreds of great things about this book.

Mine are: Impossibilia - Bannon Card Tricks Now and Then - Al Smith RRTCM - Hugard and Braue Close Up Card Magic - Lorayne The Secrets of Brother Hamman The Art of Astonishment series Magic Digest - Anderson The 5 book set of Card College - Giobbi The 3 book set of Light, Lighter, Lightest - Giobbi Sonata - Tamariz I choose these because of A) the quality (spectator reaction) of the card tricks they contain, and B) the ease of performance (for me and my skill level). I also have the Collected Almanac, as well as Vols 1 and 2 of Apocalypse. Tons of great magic in those two also, and I go to them often, as well as The Card Magic of Nick Trost, Smoke and Mirrors, Dear Mr. Fantasy, The Commercial Magic of J.C. Wagner, The Classic Magic of Larry Jennings, The Magic Book/Lorayne, Cardshark/Ortiz, Scarne on Card Tricks, Encyclopedia of Card Tricks, Fechter/Magicians Nitely, The Greater Artful Dodges of Eddie Fields, Super Subtle Card Miracles/Garcia...well, you know how it goes on and on. But those would be my top ten. I'd love to hear yours. Thanks. Phil |
