Hi!
I want to make a close-up case on a small stand so I can pick it up and carry it from table to table. It will free up my pockets and give me more props without the unprofessionalism of rummaging around on the floor! Any thoughts from those who take cases to tables? |

I use a toiletry bag. It has lots of pockets and pouches and fits almost everything I need. Rolls up and clips together. I bought mine in Target for $10.

And do you take it with you to tables?
If so, where do you put it? |

Personally, I work out of my pockets when I perform. Most of my effects use props like cards, coins, rope, sponge balls, etc. This isn't coming from experience, but theoretically, I wouldn't want to take up too much table space, or have to carry a heavy close-up case with me from table to table. After 20 or so tables, I would think it would tiring to pick it up, walk 10 feet away, and set it down again, over and over.

Scott Guinn had a great accessory called 'The Table Hoppers Friend' that attached easily to almost any table, allowing you to have a performing surface separate from the spectators' surface, yet keeping the floor space clear. I understand he is no longer selling to magicians, but perhaps he may be able to steer you in the right direction.

I've done close up work for the past ten years and their are ALOT of routines I can't do because I don't have room in my pocket.
I don't want to put a big box on their table...or a carry around chunky briefcase table. The table hoppers friend, whilst less intrusive, still take up too much of the audience's personal space. I'd imagined a make up or camera case with a handle on the top and a stand on the bottom. I can pick it up by the handle and move it around. It would work for table hopping and walk around. Even use it as a working surface It would allow me to do chop cup, cups and balls, extra gimmick decks and larger props that usually don't work in a walk around setting. The sort of cases can be seen here. http://members.aol.com/katkatbark/tooledcase.jpg http://i10.ebayimg.com/03/i/02/77/30/9e_1_b.JPG |

I have toyed with the idea myself, although I went with a custom made drawer box with a work surface on top. The Drawer can be used as a servante as well as prop storage.
Then I asked my self, "Why am I working so hard for these wages?" A few coins, sponges, bands, cards, and a handkerchief and you should be able to entertain anybody for the 3 minutes you get per table. Save the cups and balls, linking rings etc for the shows they book you for at their home. Make the service equal the fee. Don't give away the farm. Hone your performance skills using the venue, that is a fair trade and a way to develop your abilities. Kirk G. |

A very good point.
However, I don't do family retaurants (or anything for low fee) My fees for close up start at $275 and go up... |

Check out Ronjo.com. They have a smaller close up table with a slide out drawer, and sell a stand that hooks into it. It's a pretty nice setup from all appearances. Fits a smaller close-up pad perfectly. Looks like it's lightweight and flexible to use.

I too could not find the table descibed at that site.
Nick, My comments were directed at using a table while working a restaurant. I use a table while doing strolling gigs for crowd control and to give the spectators a place to put their drinks. I am working at getting a rolling base for the drawer style due to it weight. I guess it is a matter of locale, because here in LA we start at $500.00 for private shows. Kids shows are less for most performers, around 175-375. There are always the newbies who try at $50-100 and die a quick dealth. Kirk |

It looks like Ronjo is no longer selling it. You could contact them I suppose and see if they indeed have discontinued them or you can go here to magic auction.com and they have one at the top of the page. Just follow this link:

Couldn't you make one out of a briefcase?
If you found a way to mount a stand under the case then it would give you a case and a table surface.
Nothing of the same will bring any change, take action today!

Ronjo sells stands and flanges that attached to any case.
However, a briefcase would not be ideal because the hand is on the side. I'd like the handle on the top so I can pick it up. Plus a breifcase is bit big! |

I was interested in this case a few months ago and contact Ronjo. The case was made just for them and they do not know if they will be selling again in the future.

Probably larger than what you are looking for, but http://www.gigrig.com has one of the best close-up cases I have seen. My father-in-law is a master wood worker, and he is making me one that is very similar.

I think that Brad Burt's idea of a doctor's bag is the best idea for 10 reasons:
A. Specs cannot see inside when it's open. B. It takes up no more space open than closed. C. Loads and ditches into the bag. D. It takes up no table space. E. I would feel very uncomfortable setting anything like that on a specky's table or attach it to a table. F. I would feel very uncomfortable walking around avenue with a table under my arm.

Frank,
What are the rest of the reasons? Also it doesn't address the working surface requirement. Kirk |

Kirk, if I don't have a working surface, I stick to things that don't require one. I'm always scouring books looking for just such items. They're not too hard to find.
G. Things don't blow away that you set in the bag if you're outside H. If you get one with a lock, you can lock it up. I. Let's see... how many is that. J. I don't think working surface was an original requirement. :) Frank By the way Kirk, that table we saw at Hollywood Magic was pretty nifty. Ever buy it?

No,
It was too short. For $80.00-$100.00 I would want it to be perfect. While not in the orginal post, the original poster did say, ". Even use it as a working surface." Kirk |
