Hi all of you. Have any of you used or worked with black lights for a black art effect. Will a black backdrop and a black lights be sufficient to hide someone standing on stage dressed in black from head to toe ?

Black lights aren't used in most BA performances. Check out the forum that Xmosis suggested.

Hi camelot, I know many don't use black lights in the black art. But that was not my question. I was wondering how the turnout wud be if we DID use black lights for a black based vanish.

Black Light would pick up anything white. Per say we did a dance in High School. Where everyone was whereing black clothing and the lights where on so you could see them. But once we turned the lights off and the black lights on you can only see the gloves that they where wearing. It was very cool. They did some really sweet dance moves with gloves and there shoes.

I saw a BA act using Black Light at a magic con in the 60's. It was really nice...flowers grew...a pair of gloves performed magical feats...things floated...it was a very old highly regarded magish doing the act and there was much skill displayed...only drawback that I remember was I was sitting fairly close and the LINT on some of the cloth items was glowing like uranium.

I see. I didn't consider the part of "props" in a BA performance. Sure, if you want them to glow, UV light is one way to do it but, as Xmosis mentions, it'll also cause lots of unexpected things to phosphoresce as well.
If you really want a wow effect that emphasizes a prop, such as a "neon" sort of outline or structure, try Lightningwire: it's amazing stuff! |

CamelotFX...great post about the Lightningwire.
We have quite a bit of it. We were able to get it right from the manufacturer for a great price. We are outlingin our opening production with it. The stuff is great, better than neon in some ways. With neon to get an area where it doesn't glow you have to still have the galss tube there and paint it black. but with the Lightiningwire is is much easier. You simply cut the two wires, and tie in black speaker cable. At the other end tie back in more Lightning wire and it starts glowing again at that point. So now you can make it say go across treads of steps but not on the risers. Hope that makes sense how I described it. Kevin

Black Usally Does not show UP. the audience may or may not even notice your Asst in Black. one good example would be on the Muppet Show there was like a Black Art Puppett thing done. very nicely it was a troupe of like 3 people I forget the name of the act. also how are you presenting it. or doing it I'm also thinking of rigging up a box with two BlackLights in it and Mirrors just for a light thing or something to goof around with. has anyone ever Done a Floating Hankerchief under BlackLight. Don,

I guess no ones done a floating hanky because that cud be easily achieved without going thru the trouble of using black art. But I guess you cud suddenly make the hanky grow into a huge dancing sheet. And then you are found inside it. Howz that for a nice routine.

No one has mentioned the work of Omar Pasha. I first saw the act as part of Richardi's World Festival of Magic and Occult in NYC. Fantastic work. The new incarnation of the act was a part of the TV special Hidden Secrets of Magic. When performed live, UV lighting and red blinder lights were used. On television, the act was performed with normal lighting with the Black Art adjustments made in post production.

I saw Omar Pasha at San Diego and it was incredible. Carefully rehearsed, blocked, and routined. It was a thing of beauty. It was a beautiful update of the Black Art act coupled using uv Black Light to increase the emphasis of the act.
