Hi! I am getting serious in cups and balls. I have the Johnson cups. As a magic wand I was wondering to use the Johnson magic wand that match the cups. A couple of questions: 1) Is it worth to spend 45$ for such wand? 2) Does anyone use the magnetic feature in the Johnson wand? Does it damage the cups when tapping on them?
I am very pleased with Ammar Videos on Cups and Balls: any other suggestion? Books or dvd's...... Thank you. |

Gazzo on the Cups & Balls. David Williamson's routine in Williamson's Wonders.
A wand is worth whatever you pay if it makes you happy and works for you. The wand I mainly use was about 5 dollars (dowel), is covered in electrical tape, and it vanishes objects just as nicely as my other more expensive wands. |

I use the wand from Penguin magic. I think I paid $15 for it. I am thrilled. Nice balance, weight. It would be nice if it were a bit longer, I'm a big guy.

Different wands work in different venues. If you're working on the street or a marketplace, a heavy "thumper" is what you need. It's there to make noise, bang the cups, bang the table, whatever. For that, a hardwood dowel is all that's necessary. Find something that's difficult to break. A drumstick works well. Frank Starsini (A Café member) offers hardwood "thumpers" in a few different exotic woods.
Metal tips can damage your cups, so I'd reserve those types of wands for indoor, close-up performances where a lot of banging isn't necessary.

You can see the wands on my website.
I use them all the time in a street setting and love to bang around with them. I'm also making smaller ones to Cellini's specifications. A touch less than 1/2" in diameter and 12 inches long. Those are not pictured. I would recommend anyone's wands that you like except I am not so sure about Penguin's wands due to their unethical business practices. Until I'm assured that they are not stealing from others, I'm staying clear. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Frank

Ammar's wand he makes is very nice. I also have a few homemade versions that I like better. Tom Frank, who makes the Phoenix cups sells a nice ironwood wand that is tuff as nails and works nicely, but not for spins. As far as other material to study. Take a look at Tommy Wonder's excellent routine in his books or DVDs. This is a very offbeat 2 cup routine and has a few big surprises. You will never be fooled by cups and balls so badly in your life.

I have the Johnsons Cups and the Brass Johnson wand with the magnet. To answer your question, NO, the magnet does no damage to the Johnson cups. The Johnson wand is VERY heavy and makes a great "Thumper". WARNING: If considering the Johnson wand, be sure it does not use the nylon threads, Mine broke after very little use. Johnson did repair it and replaced the threads with something more suitable for the weight, just make sure yours is already modified. Nuttin worse than a broken wand during a performance. Nothing magical about that at all.

I've got a BUNCH of wands on my cups and balls web site. For street work, I doubt seriously that I would use any takedown wand, except maybe the Presley Guitar wand that I have. It's the only one I know of that won't self destruct from normal use.
The Magic Makers wand (which Penguin sells) is okay. But they do get out of alignment very easily. I make one called "The GoldenRod," which Oscar Muñoz and Lonnie Chevrie endorse. It's solid brass. But I wouldn't pound on a set of cups with it. It is getting much more difficult to find good doweling these days. The stuff I have seen at lumber yards lately is very rough and requires a lot of sanding to get it into a finishable condition. I've made a few up from regular doweling covered with contact paper and plastic tape. They hold up well for a beginner or disposable wand. There should be something new from Mike Brazill of RNT 2 magic very soon. And let me say this about Frank Starsini. His products are excellent.

Hi
1/4 inch chromed brass pipe had an OD of approx 1/2 inch. White tape around the ends and you have a good wand. Paula

Lonnie Chevrie is one of the most original thinkers in close-up magic in Texas. He has won several close-up competitions. If you remember the Charles Greene issue of Genii, there were several routines in there by Charles. Almost every one of them started off "Here is my handling of Lonnie Chevrie's routine ..." He could have left out "my handling of" and it would have been much more accurate.
Lonnie was the one who came up with the Gypsy dental floss and a host of other really interesting close-up ideas. He lives in Abilene, Texas, where there aren't many magicians, so he has very little outside influence on what he does. He is kind of like Jerry Andrus in that way.
