Abbotts used to sell the Bill Neff cut and restored necktie manuscript. Perhaps they still have this.

The BEST cut and restored necktie is by Phil Cass. In fact he's known as "THe Guy Who Cuts The Tie" He brings up a guy, cuts off his tie and then doesn't restore it for 45 minutes.

Frank Herman's manuscript "Necktie Magic" [published in 1971] inludes a number of different versions for performing this effect. The 1971 publication was a revised and enlarged edition of the author's "Fifteen Methods for Doing the Cut & Restored Necktie" [published in 1942].
There's also a version in the recently published book "The Secret Ways of Al Baker". Australia's Phil Cass presents an excellent version of this effect in his stand-up act. Over the years, it has become something of a signature piece for him.

Has Phil Cass published his routine?
Some are born idiots.
Some are made idiots. Some have idiocy thrust upon them. |

I did this some years ago in a local pub ,
I was at the bar and people wanted to see something, so I just asked the bar man for some scissors, got a volenteer with a tie, and cut it in half, everyone laughed, then when I said I didn't know how to restore it they laughed even more, it must have been 10 years ago and they still talk about it as if it happened yesterday. No... I doubt phill would publish it. a) It's his signature piece b) He's a performing magician and c) It's just not practical for 99% of magicians

Hi there Nick,
We met over in Perth when you were performing there at the Joondalup festival. Great show! When I was back in Australia about 6 months ago, I did a small kids show for a nieces friend. One of the older specs there told me about this famous Aussie magician who performed this very effect. He was on vacation in Hawaii and the said magician found out there were some Aussies who were going to be at the show in the hotel that evening. The magician got their room number and paid them a visit and then asked them for some assistance for the show that evening. (hint) At least that is the story I was told. (Honest) He said many people came up to him after the show and asked him how he thought the magician did it, but he didn't let on. JoJo

JoJo-
Based on a visit to the website for Mr. Cass that certainly seems like the most likely explanation. Mr. Cass seems like a wonderful performer. I loved the sense of crazy fun that his site suggests. His willingness to use s****ges seems evident from some of the other routines he choses to do. But this only brings me to a whole new set of questions. I have been thinking about a tie cutting routine ever since I saw Kevin James version of burned bill which includes a shreading of HIS tie. He's my question for everyone. How would you like to see the tie be restored? Don't worry about the technique necessary to make it happen, what I'm looking for now is the right visual. Here are a couple of options I have been thinking about: Holding the cut off end, you reach out to the stubby end, still hung on your volunteers neck and rub at the spot where the two meet. When you let go, the cut end seems to suspend against his body,. and as the second hand comes away, the tie is restored. Or You take both parts of the cut tie and place them into a hard cover book (maybe a book on sewing) with the ends sticking out. As you pull one end the other disappears and you come away holding a whole tie. Please describe your own version. Or if anyone has seen Mr. Cass, let me know how he chooses to handle it. peter Gross http://www.funnymagic.com PS. PM me if you have any suggestions that you feel are to technically revealing for a public board. thanks PPS Hey Nick, How's it going, brother ! Hope all is well in your hemisphere. Hope to see you some day soon. |

Phil's method is nothing to do with st*****. it is all to do with pyschology and audience management. I've seen others try and use his method but they just don't get away with it.
Phil's act is AMAZING. He is the biggest jerk I have ever seen on stage! He is mean, horrible and nasty to his volunteers and they thank him for it! Its wonderful to watch! I wish I had his guts! |

Why wouldn't he publish his routine for the tie gag?
I saw his lecture notes once. There was a description of another long signature piece, the shell game. I didn't buy the notes as I already had the routine when it was originaly published by Ouellet. Still that's commerce I suppose. |

The shell and pea routine is based on several different routines and common ideas but the tie routine relies on pyschology and routining that few performers could get away with.
The 'method' is quite simple, but making it believable is the key! |

Nicholas -
Let me first apologize for discussing methods in an public forum, but since JoJo started that piece of the conversation, I didn't feel as guilty. I am actually a huge fan of st***** work, and use it myself. It is a greatly underutilized technique, partly becuase so few in the community know how to do it well and how to place it in there show. Also, so few of us are ever make it to a level of performance where it makes sense (large enough crowd, formal enough setting, proper prep time). Now that I have made my apologies... Nicholas, if you want to post on a topic you've got to do better than "the tie routine relies on pyschology and routining that few performers could get away with. " I don't want you to reveal anything specific about Mr.Cass' methods, but could you be a little more specific than 'psychology'? I mean if you don't want to share, don't post , but please don't say, 'it's out of your league' to people who are having a conversation. Either way, please blame Nick N. He started this mess. peter http://www.funnymagic.com |

What I mean is, without revealing too much about his methods is, he relies on aspects of his CHARACTER to perform the illusion and not just handling.
I'm not going to go into too much detail because, obviously, its not my place to do so and what I DO know about this routine I have gleaned from seeing the routine many times. Sorry! |

Check Jahn Gallo's website. His lecture notes include a C/R tie routine he uses on cruise ships.

Phil Cases presentation
He gets a guy up and cuts his tie. Then about 30 minutes later he does a duck pan production of a duck with the duck wearing the tie. Now at this point I was going to reveal the secret but no. This is one of Phils Trade Mark effects - this is one way he makes his living so we should not throw around methods, He hasn't released the effect to the magic community for good reason- if you have been down under and gone to any of Phils parties you would have seen a lot of Phil Cass clones. Young magicians and some that should know better copying his style, jokes, presentations, and so on. Phil is a great business man and I think it would be very bad business for him to give away the presentations and secrets at any price. It's a powerful effect and one that takes a guts to perform. I don't know any people on this post and I'm sure that some of you don't know each other or me. We shouldn't give methods away to simply the curious. They should earn it. Just my thoughts, David Welzman |

Foxbiz:
Gallo's site keeps crashing my computer. Do you have another source for his C&R Tie notes. Also, do the notes focus on the techniques, the routine, or the method? Thanks Peter Gross |
