I will be working a fair at our zoo around Halloween. It is called "Boo at the Zoo." I will end up doing a little stage and some busking. While I busk, I am thinking about doing a hat load that will drop bunch of candy onto the table at the end. I am stuck on a good way to do this. I have some ideas, ranging from a thin plastic bag in the shape and size of a mellon, to some sort of bag with a pin keeping it closed. I would appreciate any suggestions--including, "My God, the kids will destroy you and the table going for the candy!!"

My God, the kids will destroy you and the table going for the candy!!

I just read some other responses to a similar question. The arguements included getting permission from the parents, possible sugar or sugar substitute intolerance, etc...

If you do, use only sealed packages such as cello wrapped suckers, that can't be easily tampered with. If anything goes wrong... ANYTHING... you'll be the first one they blame.

The zoo gives out its own candy at this event and I was thinking that I would use this since I would be hired by the zoo. I also believe that all the kids will be with their parents and since I will be the hired magician, that they will not be too unruely.

Uhhh, okay.

You'd have to find a foolproof way of "popping" a plastic bag at the right time.

I like the bag with pin approach. Sorta like pulling the pin on a grenade. It can be a cloth bag to match the hat, as nobody's going to see it anyway. Maybe even with some double sided tape at the top to keep it in the hat after the candy is dumped.

Good luck! (you'll need it)

I understand your point about the kids. My career is as a teacher of eighth graders so I have a lot of experience working with kids and I am pretty good (at least in non-magical circumstances) at controling a group of kids. I know how to make sure that the "stage" is set up before I start and that the basic groundrules are covered. But if I think that there will be any problem at all, I will abort faster than I can say abracadabra, and just hand our the candy from a bucket, like everyone else.

PM me or move us to the banquet room.

Chris:

Look for a gadget called "The shower of sweets." You can make the gimmick yourself from a piece of square cloth. It's on p. 251 of Modern Magic.

Regarding distribution of candy -- get the zoo to sign a disclaimer indemnifying you against any legal action from children who react badly to the candy.

Make it clear that you are simply handing out the candy for them.

You could load a "water" balloon with candy, blow it up to fit the hat and pop it as needed.

Or you could do it with a zip-loc. Blow it up tight before sealing so you can squeeze the hat to pop it.

Chris,

I have been doing this type of give away for a while. I use a old silk that I use as a sac and sew the 4 corners together with thin tread that holds the load closed but is EZ to release. I make the loads up the night before. Be sure to use wrapped candy. I use Hershey mini's and kiss'.
Also before you ABORT and just pass the candy out from a bucket, you might want to try a SQUARED CIRCLE or some other production that keeps the MAGIC going.

Best of luck with the gig at the zoo.

Thank you everyone for your help. I will do some thinking and maybe bring this back to the secret sessions if I need to.

If you need a drawing of the "shower of sweets" gimmick, I can e-mail one to you. It's definitely in the public domain. You can make one for the cost of a handkerchief and a couple of pieces of wire.
