Hi Everyone,
First time user!!! What a great place you guys have to chat and share information. I wish I had more time to join into some of these topics. I see a few familiar names and faces. Anyway I just wanted to mention that Tim from Inside Magic did a story regarding my underwater coffin escape and what happened with it. I see someone had a thread on an underwater escape so I thought some might like to go there and read it. http://www.insidemagic.com Also I see you guys talking about Water Torture Cells. At http://www.magictimes.com there is a link to a short newspaper story from when I did the Cell at Houdini Days in Appleton next to Houdini Plaza. I would like to thank “The Crew “ for all there help. I couldn’t have succeeded without John Bushy, Shawn Ness, Tony Parisi, and Mark Cannon helping with my guys. It was a crazy evening, but that’s a live show for you; you just never know what to expect! I hope you are all still wearing my new World Tour T-shirts (hopefully you have washed them at least once by know though)!!! The interesting part about my cell was that it was Doug Henning’s who used it on his very first TV special in 1975. I remember watching it at home as a kid. I bought it from Brett Daniels in 1990 I believe. Probably my least favorite escape and I only attempt it rarely. Once in Italy, Tokyo, Las Vegas, and Canada. I changed the method used by Henning because it was very dangerous and bond to fail. Like I said, I don’t get much time for this message board stuff but if anyone wants to ask me some questions I will try and check back over the next little while and answer what I can. One last thing. Since I see everyone is so passionate about the art, I thought I would send anyone on the board that reads this a free Gunnarson post card. If you like, go to my web page and click on collectibles. If you will mail me a self-addressed envelope at the address listed I will mail you one. Please mention which card you would like and if you want it signed and to whom. I will even pay the postage. This offer will run only until Oct.31, 2004. My favorite day of the year! Thanks and good luck to everyone with their escapes. And always BE SAFE !!!! Always escaping, Dean Gunnarson |

Hey Dean,
Are you located in BC? couple hours north from me I think. Welcome aboard.
...think not that all wisdom is in your school. You may have studied other paths, but, it is important to remember that no matter who you are or where you come from, there is always more to learn.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome !
One of the best things of this business is traveling around the world meeting friends that have the same interest of Houdini, handcuffs, and escapology as myself. We form a unique Brotherhood. A big thanks to Kevin and Kristen for driving me around at “The Indy Convention” to get chain and locks for the Saturday show. The music helped too! Nothing worse then finding out you need to do a show and have no music, no costume, and no props. I know I wasn’t the only one. Actually I thought everyone did a great job in that show with little notice. It was an honor to work with so many escape artists on the same stage. Maybe a world record or something? A big thanks to Ian McColl too. I could thank Ian a million times, and it would never be enough, for what he has done for me and this art. Houdini would have had him on his payroll and none of us would have ever seen his beautiful work! Also a big thank you to Steve Baker for his nice words. It means a lot coming from Mr. Esacpe! I think Mr. Baker brought the Water Torture Cell back into the modern age with his escapes in the 70’s and 80’s. He was a true inspiration to me! My presentation in Appleton was not the way I usually attempt it or wanted. The crane never arrived until an hour before the show and people were already gathering. The crane that they booked never came so they had to find another one quickly. We had little time to work out the details with the operator. Also it was the wrong type of crane for the Cell. But the show must go on! We did some last minute changes rather then canceling the escape. It went well, but as an entertainer I always want to do better. I think performing on the back of the fire truck looked really cool with the timing of the lights and siren (and of course my crew was top notch!) This leads to an important point. As an escape artist it is extremely important to be versatile. To be flexible and work with what you have been given. Any type act can work their show when all the lights, stage, and environment is “perfect”, but we as escape artist’s are not just “any type act”. We can escape from anything so why should a few problems stop us. The longer you work in this business, the more obstacles you will have to overcome. Face them with a smile. It uses less facial muscles. Cheers, Dean |

Hey Dean, welcome to the board and thanks again for letting me be a part of your crew at Houdini Days. I couldn't believe how calm and collected you stayed when everything was going so wrong. I probably would have been screaming at people but not you. You just rolled with the punches and moved on to the next thing. The mark of a true professional. It was a terrific performance and I look forward to seeing you again soon. I hope you get a chance to stop in from time to time and allow us to befefit from your knowledge and experience.
Best regards, Tony Parisi PS Thanks again for the shirt(yes I washed it ) and all the other great memorabilia. |

Dean,
Welcome!!! John Bushey here. I'm thrilled to have been able to help in Appleton. Great to see you again, and remember many old times at the Minnesota & North Dakota conventions. I'll always remember zipping around Appleton in the Firetruck with you blaring the horn and all us escape enthusiasts enjoying the ride. Keep up the Great work. Best, John PS--I did wash mine, and thanks for the other items as well. I have some nice photos too. I will print some of them out and send them your way. |

Dean,
Excellent point about flexibility. This philosophy also applies to mentalism, as both escape artists and mentalists carry the air of 'reality,' inferring that we have "the power." If we have "the power," we must then be able to demonstrate it readily, with little or no apparent 'staging.' Steve
