Hello,
I have been unable to connect every evening this week from my home PC. I don't have a problem during the day at the office but in the evening I get messages saying it is unable to find the web page. Any ideas as to why? Mike |

Without further information, it's hard to say. If you can call up other sites at home, and not the Café, it could be a problem with your ISP's DNS settings, or your connection timing out (are you on dial-up?), browser security settings gone awry, firewall settings blocking this site, or any of a number of other things. These are just a few things to check, not neccessarily in the order given. Have you made any changes to your system around the time you first observed this problem? If so, that would be a good place to start investigating.

I have been having this same problem for a couple of months--the deleting the cookies idea does NOT help--sometimes I cannot get reach the Café for an entire day; other times I will go elsewhere and try to return to the Café within minutes and find I cannot.
It's very disappointing and I'm just about to the point of giving up>the time of day has no bearing. If anyone can provide a solution I will be most grateful. Thank-You! :-( |

I had problems with this yesterday for the first time. All I did was wait until morning and tried again. Everything seems to work ok now (knock on wood.) I don't know what I would do without the Café. I'd go INSANE!!!

Have you checked the things I mentioned in my post above? Another thing to try is this. At the time you can't connect to the Café, run a tracert from your computer to themagiccafe.com. Take a look at the results. If the tracert stops before it gets to themagiccafe.com, there is a problem with the server where it stops. There's nothing much we can do about that, but at least you'll know where the problem lies.

I myself am having the same problem. It gets reported as a DNS error. I only began to experience this problem AFTER I updated system by getting downloads from the Microsoft site. I am currently using Windows 2000 as my OS. So I'm pretty sure the upgrades are responsible.
The odd thing is that I used another pc a few days later at my folks. I was accessing the Café no problem - until I went to the Microsoft site and downloaded upgrades...and then could no longer access the Café. That pc uses XP as its OS. The Café is the only site I've experienced these problems with - I've been to loads of other sites with no difficulty. Could it have something to do with all the security upgrades that Microsoft has been putting out lately, and some setting or certificate on the Café's part (i'm talking out of my ear now...)?

I have checked all the security settings, I have disabled all internet protection software (pop-ups,virus, etc.) and I still have the same problem. I too have applied some updates from Microsoft. Among those is the XP service pack 2. I have checked with my ISP who told me they had no problem connecting on their end. Apart from the updates nothing has changed on my PC in some time. If anyone figures it out, please post because until then I can only visit the Café from ny office PC. |

Okay, this is goofy. Your own ISP can connect to the Café, but you can't? I don't have a clue about that one.
There isn't really anything special used here, in terms of certificates and those kinds of things. This is simply a PHP/MySQL-driven forum which uses cookies for logins, etc. I don't know enough about the inner working of an OS to be of any help, I'm afraid. I wish I did though so I could help, but ... sorry!
Somebody kick me off the computer, will ya?

For Windows XP, click Start, All Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt, then at the prompt type in:
tracert themagiccafe.com and hit your "Enter" key on your keyboard. For Windows 98, click Start, Programs, MS-DOS Prompt and type the command above at the prompt. Hit your "Enter" key on your keyboard. This will show you how many "hops" it takes to get from your computer to the Café server, and it will give you information about the servers along the way. If the last one says server1.gmbwebworks.com, you have successfully reached the Café server and you should be able to bring the Café up in your browser. If not, the problem is with whichever server is shown last in the list. |

Ok I ran the Tracert on two separate days. The last servers on those days were:
65.106.0.29 p6-0-0.RAR2.Chicago-IL.us.xo.net. 245 UNITED STATES Unix: 1:43:06.563 65.106.0.34 p1-0-0.RAR1.Dallas-TX.us.xo.net. 241 UNITED STATES Unix: 0:16:31. 50 On both these tries all I get are * after these entries. So what does the mean? Mike |

Just to complicate things I tried running a tracert from my office PC which does connect to the Café.
I get the same ending entries: 13 79 ms 99 ms 89 ms 65.106.0.34 p1-0-0.RAR1.Dallas-TX.us.xo.net. 241 UNITED STATES Unix: 0:16:31. 50 14 * * * 15 * * * 16 * * * 17 * * * [4 hops with no response; assuming we hit a firewall that blocks pings] |

Howdy, I too tried running a tracert, hopped from montreal to chicago to etc etc to somewhere in texas (sounds like my dad's last business trip), just like the guys above, but then had a bunch of unsuccesful attempts. I don't have the exact wording here at work with me (it was on my home pc). Again, I am able to connect to every other site in the world just about. And all of this started when I did a fairly standard download/upgrade to Windows 2000 from the Microsoft site... If I were Scooby and Shaggy, I'd say "hmm, a clue"!
I must say I'm releived to here it's not just me (though I feel bad for you guys!).

Anyone?
I hate to say it but if we can't put our heads together and figure this one out, I will have to stop coming here. (i'm doing so from work right now but obviously THAT'S not a good idea).

Thank you Jaz, but I had already checked those settings out (and hadn't manually adjusted them anyway).
The mystery continues!

Here is the latest. I did some tests on the weekend and found out that I could connect with a dial-up connection but not when using my cable modem.
Called my ISP and did some more tests. The latest is that there seems to be a routing problem involving some company called ev1.net. I contacted them at admin@ev1.net but since I am not a customer they were nothing but rude and unhelpful. I GIVE UP! Mike |

Got this off an ev1.net forum about a similar problem.
"I would suggest you contact the owner of the site to have them check their security settings to make sure that the ip range you listed is not blocked. The tracert you supplied shows that your request actually makes it into the EV1 network, The server your trying to connect to may not allow ip's from the 70. range. The 70 ip range is a newer range and some firewalls block it by default." Can the Café check this out? Mike |

Helloooooo, Any Café tech people out there?

Yes, but not all the time. EV1 is the datacenter where the server is located. We're already talking to EV1 about this, but so far nothing's been found. We're still checking into it. This is likely a server/network issue, not an individual site problem. For example, if you check these sites and can't get them either, then the entire server or network has a problem. Perhaps you can advise if you can see these sites? There isn't much on those pages, but they are active and on the same server as the Café.

I will try these sites tonight (Oct 28) and post the results tomorrow. Thanks for working on this.
I really thought we were onto something with this IP in the 70s range thing. Darn! Nothing is ever simple. Thanks again. Mike |
