I don't think this question really can be answered. I think it has to vary with the specific escape.

I don't do water escapes, but if one does, you need to give the audience time to be afraid that you have drowned.

When I was doing my one man metamorphesis, I was cuffed bagged and trunked, and made the escape in three seconds. The punchline to that kind of escape is that the audience knows you can get out, but cannot believe the speed. Obviously I didn't get out of all that in three seconds, some came off early and under their noses, but speed makes the illusion work.

How fast do your escapes go?

I think you need to leave enough time to let the audience know you are working, yet not too long so they get bored.

My 100' rope tie (with me ties to a chair) is set to Hey Stoopid my Alice Cooper and lasts about 4 minutes. I think this is long enough for a full view escape. If you do escapes behind a curtain I think that you need it to be less, say 2-2 1/2 minutes. Although as cliff said earlier when under water the longer you can leave it the more tension you can build.

100' rope & chair - a minute. This is because I have a volunteer with a watch counting down, and watching a second hand make one rotation is as complicated a job as I'm willing to entrust to an unknown spectator. Two rotations would require maths skills.

My other main stage routine at the moment involves two pairs of handcuffs (ungimmicked generics), a big ol' length of chain that's wrapped around and attached with padlocks and a costume change punchline (I'm covered with a bag as it happens, which I whip off to reveal a different outfit in time with the last chord of the music). I do this to a (specially recorded) punk rock version of "The Stripper" which lasts just over two minutes, which is longer than you'd think when you have to fill it enough to satisfy a rock'n roll audience.

Both of these routines altogether (with gags, introductions, getting volunteers, being tied up and climaxing with the escape) last about 8-10 minutes each, which is about right for cabaret slots at the level I'm at right now.

I just followed Roslyn's lead and checked out your web site. Good job lass.

You can see my praise in your guestbook.

So... when will you be visiting the U.S. with your show?

Some time yet, I'm still getting started with this act, but many thanks for your support! Smile I'll be updating with more media when I have something cool to show you, hopefully including the improved version of that routine.. what you see now is the preliminary version, which I'm using to get feedback and make improvements.
