Hey guys. I just decided to start to learn the art of card flourishes. I wanted to know some dvd's that were good for beginners and that could get me some basics for moving on to the big stuff. also, after I learn the beginning stuff, which dvd's should I pick up to learn the big time stuff. I need help cuz I have no idea of which dvd's to buy.

Anything by Cap isn't that good. Go for McBride for DVD. But Jerry's encyclopedia is the best. Has everything you ever need.

For beginner-super advanced, go for the awesome Cradle To Grave DVD.

For the world's hardest one handed cuts, De'vo is now accepting pre-orders at: http://www.xtremehandz.com Now this is one HOT DVD!

Jerry also has a DVD as a companion.

Goto xtremehandz and check it out. They have several good DVDs on XCM.

For free, check http://www.handlordz.com for some great free download moves.

PS: The Cobra DVD has Top NOTCH teaching. It is made so even laymen can do it. De'vo is a very good teacher.
get the Cobra DVD and Jerrys Book. Then you get CTG (The CTG forum may also help you at starting out. it has a lot of free tutorials and stuff and you get expert help)

Mc Brides DVDs are the best of its kind. but I think they only teach productions and a few pretty basic flourishes (charlier and spring(wrong))

Ok

here's what to buy.

Definately:

The System by Dan and Dave Buck - Even if at first you cant't do some of the stuff, the performance is something to aim for.

Gen X - The material is superb, there's nothing better. The teaching is utter crap, but with the help of the 'rewind' button, you get the hang of things.

The Bible - Essential is every way

CTG - The definition of XCM Beauty

Maybe:

Mcbride's Sets. They ain't bad, but he's a nutter.

Cap Casino DVD - Some average stuff here. Nice displays, though.

Cobra - Brilliant, but depends how much you like the cut

Definately NOT:

Showoff With Cards - It's a rip off, and the performance is dire

Extreme Cuts with Keone - Potentially good, but its just not polished enough

Hope that's helps.

Do you guys really like the CTG video? I watched a good portion of it from a friend's DVD, but for $40 I feel like people of all stages would learn a lot more breadth, more standard moves, and more usable material on the $30 AOCM 1 than on the CTG video. The CTG seems quite 'niche'y.

Plus, his 'back hand vanish' seems a much poorer version of the 1/2 deck vanish taught on the AOCM videos =)

But if you can shed some light on why De'Vo inspires such a following, please do so. I feel like he doesn't add much new to the genre but perhaps manic speed, and the into/out of card box move.

Thanks!

CTG is an awesome DVD by De'vo. It is a very good teaching DVD. It may be only a few moves, but they are all worth the price. Plus you get some extras from the Hand Lordz forum. Also the display that is not shown in the promo video is the pretties and coolest display of fans I've ever seen. Also superhandz is coming out with a beginners extreme card mainpulations DVD.

Until it comes out. Get the encyclopedia of playing card flourishes
http://www.flourishman.com
Buy the DVD with it too. There are some nice little extras on it!
Jerry's book is extremely detailed in its explainations, you don't have to read much though. The pictures are awesome!

Yeap, I'll give the nod for the message above. De'vo's work is oh so inspiring, at least to me. I've enjoyed his teaching methods immensely.

As for Jerry's DVD's on the encyclopedia of card flourishes I have a few comments to offer that Jerry recommended. The original dvd, 1, has a few minor problems. He told me I'd be better off to wait till the second release of the first dvd comes out. Should be before the end of next month. Also the next dvd, 2, will be coming out at that time also. I plan to get them both when they become available.

I like the dvd's but really enjoy the books. One such book I feel is worth mentioning, aside from EOCF, is T.G.Murphy's Imagication. You can get an autographed copy from the author for only $35 bucks. Getting into the mind set he lays forth during your initial incubation period will yield the right attitude for creating your own moves, like De'vo and a few others have done.

Murphy doesn't have a website yet but can be contacted via email to make an order. If interested PM me and I'll give ya his addy.

Vaughan54 be sure what ever you do get the dvd version and not a vhs. I'd get Jeff McBride's 3 disk series on The Art of Card Manipulation. That'll keep you busy for a while and I'll bet a Hundred dollars the kind of stuff you want to learn FIRST is on McBride's Volume 1. Just try not to laugh outloud when you see McBride's "Magical" Charlier Cut. hehhehehehe

Hope this heads you in the right direction.

P.S. Daryl's Encyclopedia of Card Sleights Volumn 8 has a few cool touches on it.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

If you are a newbie, then I'd wait for the Xtreme Beginnerz DVD. Superhandz has the best teaching handz down of any flourish DVD which helps out beginners. Also those that know Jerry and De'vo know that they have lots of surprises in store and if you have been checking on their progress, you will see that the production value will jump 200% from the Cobra which is saying hoops for what the qualilty will be. Since Cobra's production was awesome and even better than CTG. Also a little birdie told me that Daryl and maybe other card guys will be on the DVD.

Now to comment about the Cradle to Grave DVD. De'vo's CTG DVD was intended originally to be De'vo's underground moves for other hard core artists. Those that are not artists or don't have an appreciate for this kind of artform can't really understand it. It wasn't really meant for beginner magicians.lol CTG was revolutionary of it's time. It's teachng with no words, all hands on black and the repeat no rewind teaching style has blown away the competition. The fact that it was 1 hour and 10 minutes of all original music and sound effects was mindboggling. The CTG routine and the Heaven Display themselves were worth 10 times the amount of the DVD to XCM artists. Magicians don't understand XCM shows or the use for such routines or moves, and therefore don't understand the value of them. Putting out a real working ROUTINE of card flourishes or skill display with patter and so on by itself is undispensable. Also having a special forum for private like tutoring is something else that not many have done before. De'vo continues to add moves and even some useful to the magician like his ungimmicked card rise and others. Also he gave out hundreds of dollars of free prizes the first year to those that bought his DVD. Previously, De'vo's material went for hundreds to thousands of dollars if you could even get your hands on his material. Even some of his CD ROMS went for $400.00 and more on Ebay. CTG was the first project released to a large number of people and at a very small price compared to his other material. His book was $500.00 when it was released and was sold out in 2 hours. So if you have read the above, you will see why CTG broke many boundries and was revolutionary for it's time. For the people that can't appreciate it's beauty, then you don't deserve his material. I personally think De'vo should go back to how it used to be, and only deliver his underground material to a very selected few like the old days. But wait! He is! Anyone hear about the Motions DVD? It's half way done and only certain people are getting it.

So who knows about his future underground material, but it sounds like he won't offer it to the public anymore and I can see why.

Getting back to topic. Besides the Xtreme Beginner DVDs, the bible - The Encyclopedia of Playing Card Flourishes is the best possible card flourish item available! Read through it and you will see why McBrides isn't the teaching item of choice. McBride teaches several things incorrectly and your flourishes will suffer if you are an XCM artist. If your just a magician looking for a few flourishes for magic, then go for it. I'm sure the XCM artists would appreciate it.lol Jerry's companion DVD is off the hook whether you have the book or not. Lots of gerat ideas there!

In my mind, Sculptor kind of artist. Being able to build some of the most beautiful displays and moves with cards. Some people take it way to far a blow themselves up on how special they are that they can preform a cobra, kind cobra, what ever move it is.

I own a copy of Jerry's book and if you plan on really getting into flourishes then get it. The DVDs are, again, worth getting too. Nothing of De'vo's is taught in the book. The Bible will take you through all the basics. From a ribbon spread and charlier cut, to things more advanced. Things like Arm Spreads with waterfall catches and the overhead spring.

I want to say this, sorry to brag, but I could do the overhead spring way before I got Jerry's book. It is such a cool spring. Also, the motions DVD that is coming out is not as secret as posted above, it will just come out in small quantity, very small.

Oh c'mon... stop with the Showoff with Cards bashing *snigger*

I mean... Rob Stiff's inverted card spring isn't THAT bad *gaffaw*

McBride's set seems to be pretty good in value... might consider that. I prefer Teaching DVD's to books, thus Jerry's Encyclopedia is out.

If only I discovered The Magic Café before I bought Showoff. I might have bought all of if from the market to stop others from possesing this awesome *gasp* teaching video.

The Motions DVD won't come out to the public. Yes very small, but you won't be able to get a copy. De'vo is giving them out for FREE to only certain people. Look at the forums if you don't believe me. So yes, it's that secret.

And showoff sucks all that is not holy.lol

I actually opened my Xmas gift on New Years Day yesterday (family tradition =P) and I was surprised to see my *&#$@ brother to have wrapped the Bible and companion dvd that I had ordered off Jerry. Anyway reading through it made me realise why people call it the 'Bible' ~ cause Jesus himself couldn't do xcm like Jerry (and the fact that it's HUGE and has everything!).

The bible is a must for beginners and advanced manipulators.
