Steve,
Do you know of any specific situation where anyone has been granted a license to manufacture Bicycle cards? All of the gaffed Bicycle cards I know of are manufactured by the same company that manufactures regular Bicycle cards, the United States Playing Card Company. Magicians are not a large part of the company's customer base. How many magicians compared to non-magicians do you think there are in the world? The reason more gimmicked cards aren't made in Bicycle backs is because of the minimum order required (I'm not sure of the exact amount currently required but it's somewhere between 5000 and 10,000 decks). Actually Larry, I'm pretty sure that there were some figures being discussed awhile back on the Café on exactly that topic.
I believe the general consesus that while Casino's were their main buyer, as far as bicycles go, magicians made up a large portion of their customer base. While most laymen will eventually buy a deck of cards, they don't always go for bikes(usually the spiderman/scooby doo/ect), and while a laymen might buy a deck every 5 years(guessing), magicians are known for buying them by the dozen ever month or so. Even more for performing magicians that work every night. |

Posted: Oct 16, 2004 8:52pm I'm not too interested in card effects but, having said that, obviously it'd be a good idea for a mentalist to know at least a few card effects lest an audience (or the person doing the hiring) expected/requested some be performed. Therefore, I'm admittedly looking for the easiest deck to work with, but one is best for strong mentalism effects. Would John Kennedy's Mind Power Deck be the best to choose in my case? Can anyone suggest some other such decks for a mentalist who's not really into cards but who's determined to add at least a few strong card effects to his repertoire? Thanks!

I'd love to see figures. I have a hard time believing that magicians comprise a large percentage of the population that buys Bicycle cards.
In any event, I don't want to keep posting off-topic. On topic, my opinion is that the Mind Power Deck is very good. |

Isn't this as close as a real mindreading should be. Let them forget about the fact they actually saw a deck of cards. If they'd describe the effect it should be: I merely thought of a card and he read my mind!

I have not been able to find the instructions with my Mind Power deck. Though I have the Joker, I can not remember the exact setup. I know I have mixed them somehow. If anyone can PM me the setup I would appreciate it.

There is no "setup"
Just make sure that all the cards are in "rotating" order. |

When I looked through them, I actually found that there is a standard setup on the "array" card provided. Though the effect can work without this, it sure is nice to have as a reference. Jim |

Pretty expensive...
just 1 question: if something happens to the deck, can I make another deck myself? or do I have to shell out extra money for another deck? |

You have to shell out the money for another deck.
How ever, if you use it in 1 show, it should have already paid for itself, and I assure you with care it will last many great shows... It's just a cost of doing buisness to replace your props when they wear out. |

Larry,
I'm not sure if US Playing Cards licenses bike backs or not. I assumed they did, but on second thought they probably wouldn't like to license their copyright just to have someone turn out sub-par cards. Sure there could be some sort of oversight, but that is probably more bother than they would care to worry about. I've no idea about actual numbers about how many decks sell to magicians rather than the general public but I would think that even a non-card magician goes through more decks in a year than non-magicians go through in a lifetime. My parents still use the same pack (with kittens on the back) that they did when I was a kid. In fact, one card got ripped and instead of replacing it they wrote the value of the missing card on a joker. Anyway, back on topic. The mindpower deck is a very nice trick and worth the money. It has its failings as any gaffed deck does, but unless you mess up the handling/spec control, you get a very stong effect. MentaThought: The MP deck is a good choice for a mentalist. Other decks you should look at are the Cassandra deck, an invisible deck and a one-way deck. Steve |

I have decided to wrestle with my sanity...I am going to split my spare Mindpower deck and stick on some split Bike backs (red, to match the decks I usually use and will switch it with should I need to).
If I surive I will let you all know how it went!

Back to the original question. A mind power deck is defintely worth the money. For anyone who has read 'Pure Effect' by Derren Brown, then the will know that one of his best effects uses the mind power deck

I do not have a mind power deck , but I get very good reactions from the "CHASED" set up. Can even have multiple spectators choose a card. And then read(?) their minds! Or so they think.

Why should you have to show the backs of a deck of cards to the laymen showing them it is not a gaffed deck? They won't be in the slightest bit interested in the backs of the cards.

For those of you that have the david williamson dvds when you watch his explainitation of his color changing deck he says he just takes the deck and puts it on top of the card box with the ideferent colored card on top of it and leaves it there. no one is gonna think O I bet every card under that one is a differet color. in this case they wont think o I bet every other card under there is not a bicycle. and now a days tally ho's are getting more popular than bikes. if you go to NYC its tally ho so you wouldnt even be using the most popular kind so don't worry bout it.
