How many of you perform this card effect?
Do you get good reactions from it? Do the specs. ever question you about the performance? Do you think that it prompts the specs. to find a solution? Do you think the specs. would come to the obvious conclusion as to how it is done? What do you think about these type of card effects? Do you think this type of card effect prompts the specs. to analyze and come up with a solution? I ask these questions because I try to look at a card effect from the layman's point of view. I think the more I learn about card magic the more I'm becoming jaded. I'm questioning whether the card effects are entertaining or if I'm simply trying to fool the spectators. I know presentation has a lot to do w/determining whether the card effect is entertaining or trying to fool. Thanks.

Good questions all.
When you do the thing, you can play up the invisibility part, and put the bit about palming and cheating at cards in quotes, describing how you hear stories about card cheats to good that if anyone looked in their hands there was nothing to see. You can wind up with young children hanging off your arm wanting to touch the invisible cards.

I assume you mean Open Travellers...
"How many of you perform this card effect?" Can't speak for everyone, but I do. "Do you get good reactions from it?" Fantastic ones. "Do the specs. ever question you about the performance?" In what way? They don't really ask any questions, because every answer is provided for them in the presentation. "Do you think that it prompts the specs to find a solution?" No, they are too busy being amazed or entertained to worry about solutions (and what solution would they find anyway? You just made cards travel invisibly). "Do you think the specs. would come to the obvious conclusion as to how it is done?" No, I don't, if performed well. "What do you think about these types of card effects?" "These types"? Be more specific. As far as this effect, by itself, I like it a lot. "Do you think this type of card effect prompts the specs. to analyze and come up w/a solution?" No? "I ask these questions because I try to look at a card effect from the layman's point of view. I think the more I learn about card magic the more I'm becoming jaded. I'm questioning whether the card effects are entertaining or if I'm simply trying to fool the spectators." The effect to a laymen is "Whoa how did that card get there?" It can either be entertaining or fooling depending on the magician. |

I might be entirely mistaken, but to the best of my knowledge, *Invisible palm* and *Open Travellers* are 2 ENTIRELY different concepts.

Larry Jennings first came up with "Open Travellers", published in 1969 I believe in Expert Card Mysteries.
It involves 4 aces that, 1 at a time, travel invisibly to the table to join other aces. I'm not sure who coined the "invisble palm" name(Paul Harris?), but it is simply "open travellers". |

OK...I can't check, back..Expert Card Mysteries is Alton Sharpe..I only have his Part 1 and 2 called Expert Card conjuring/chicancery..
I'll happily agree then, as I assume, the handling of the aces, one at a time, is done the way that it is done when doing the routine called *The invisible palm*..meaning the aces vanish one at a time, whilst being in a *Charlier-pass* similar position in the left hand..

Daegs...
It was Paul Harris, who wrote up what he called the "P.H. Invisible Palm" in Las Vegas Close-Up, pp. 26-39. For those of you into brevity (as well as purty pitchers), he also has the same effect, with patter, in Ammar's Magical Arts Journal, volume 2, #9-12, pp. 21-27.

I believe there's a Sanvert effect called "Royal Travelers" that starts out like the P.H. handling, with the kicker that the four aces become a royal flush in whatever suit you like.
One bit o'business I use with Invisible Palm routines is to demonstrate a legitimate back palm, then go into the routine to show how it'd work in an actual card game. Throughout the routine, I do progressively more ridiculous hand contortions, pretending to hide a card that's not actually there. It's a cute bit, just don't overdo it. I finish the routine with a vanish off the top of the deck onto a spectator's palm. The card, I tell them, is stuck in the person's palm. It's not in my hand, see? It's not on the deck (double lift), see? Gotta be in your hand. I have the person "smear" the card onto the tabled packet, exposing four cards where there were supposedly only three. I don't know if that ending works well by itself, because I always ride the reaction from that revelation directly into the kicker conclusion. |

I don't know why? But in some reason I have left this out from my performance, I have never even thought about performing this.
I don`t say that it`s bad, no it is defenately nod bad effect at all. It`s just one of those many effects I know all about, but I`m never gonna use it in my performance.

I originally saw Paul Harris do the Invisible Palm routine in a shop I was managing. Done well and smoothly the effect is quite startling. It is though one of those routines that must be done without hesitation and with complete control of the techniques involved because it DOES draw the audiences focus very narrowly upon your hands as they do the manipulations.

Sorry but is Open travellers the same effect which Bill Mallone performs in Volume 3 or 4 in his dvd sett? When I first seen Bill perform this my jaw hit the ground....its rather difficult to get down and that *** dimega spread(sorry about spelling)has me sweating bullets...but I shall continue trying!

I have performed the Paul Harris version of "The Invisible Palm" from "The Act" in Ammar's Magical Arts Journal for several years. Always on the lookout for new ideas, I must say that Bill Malone's handling and patter diffuses some of the heat on the hands at the crucial moments. For the interested, it is entitled "How Cheaters Cheat" and is the second effect on volume 4 of "On the Loose".

I consider this trick to be one of the most visual around and Bill Malone's presentation is hilarious.

I'm thinking of buying this trick. Is there any gimmick required? or is it all sleight of hand?

I have 2 versions of what could be called an Invisible Palm Trick. The first uses a gaff and a H Wallet. The second uses slights and can be done with a borrowed deck. The latter is something I discovered accidentally. I am not sure if I could post it in this section. With so many working minds out there it would be almost imposibble to say this is mine, this is original etc. Those who are interested may PM me . I also need to know if this handling exist!
Peace! Rannie
