If I were to join only one with no affiliation to a local club, I feel that the IBM's Linking Ring is a far better return for dues money than the MUM. The Linking Ring has had interesting, in depth articles on historical subjects, theoretical sunjects, as well as biographical subjects. The quality of regular contributors to the Linking Ring results in better magical material (over all) each month. Finally, the reviews (while not overly critical) actually resemble reviews, which is more than we can say for the MUM.
HOWEVER, if one is going to join on the local level, then heed the advice of others and see which club will offer you the most, that is where the value lies. |

Yeah but the biggest problem with The Linking Ring is that it's just too thick! It's a digest more than a magazine and it will eat you out of house and home.
Being one who just can't throw a periodical away I had to decline taking the magazine when I signed up for my stint in the IBM. I just didn't have the spare room to stack the three or four feet of monthly magic mags that would have eventually appeared in my house via the mailbox. This of course means that I never got the issue that had my submission in our club parade earlier this year either but I was willing to make that sacrifice in order to save valuable bookshelf space.

I'd rather have space occupied by something containing interesting things, than space occupied by something containing nothing of interest. Plus, the IBM mags can be had on CD-rom.

Many belong to both.
There also may be a difference in how your local Assembly and Ring do things. In Cincinnati, SAM concentrates on a more 'member-active' approach with 'trick themes' at each meeting. IBM here concentrates on lectures. Steve

Visit both and check the quality of individuals involved in each organization. Do you want to hang with a group like this? Are the members doing the same type of magic that interests you? The strength of an such organizations typically comes from the quality of its members.
You may decide to choose one over the other, to join both, or to skip both. Each local group is different from each other. |

I would suggest going to several meetings of each organization. You'll meet the members and find out which one in your area will be the most beneficial while your getting started.
To me its all about how good the group/ring is in your area. Once you figure that out I'd start with that one and grow from there. I found that in my area most of the magi are in both but each group has a little different feel and style. Being comfortable when starting out is key to your success. So in essence is not about which one is better, they are both Great! Its all about where the meetings are and the support each one offers. Hope you find a Ring soon!
