Hello Everybody, I am actually practicing thimbles manipulation, I have a lot of techniques, and also I've seen the McBrides videos of World Class Manipulation, but I can't create a good routine, could you please tell me what kind of routine do you perform? Like how many thimbles you use, do you only multiplicate the thimbles, do you make any colour change of the thimbles, etc.
Thanks in advance MAGO68

Hi,
You didn't say if you work on stage or close up. On stage the traditional ending is to produce 8 or 10 thimbles at once. A novel ending might be to transform one or several thimbles to another object. The thimble manipulator Viggo Jahn closed his act by placing 4 thimbles in a bag, blowing into the bag, smashing the bag with his fist. When he opened his fist there was a thimble on 4 of the fingers. Yours faithfully Dan Kirsch |

Hi Mago38,
Please read Geoffrey Buckingham's "Dancing Thimbles" in volume 2 "It is easier than you think". It is very entertaining for the audience to see the thimbles "dancing" from finger to finger whilst multiplying. Also you will find the effect of the "moving" thimbles from the busted paper bag to the finger tips in Buckinghams "It is easier than you think". I only got the books from Dr. Bobs Shop (link removed) Each reprint costs $10. But it is worth it to spend it for these booklets. Oh, beg your pardon! The link for Dr. Bobs Shop doesn't work. It was not my intention to "fool" anyone. Try http://www.magicstor.com/files/ and enter the book shop. In section "I" you will find "It is easier than you think". |

There is a nice "thimbles across" type routine in The Dai Vernon Book of Magic. It is presented in the book as a close-up effect using small, "regular" thimbles, but I have adapted it to be used with the big, bright wooden ones I use. It can still be done close-up but I imagine it would work for platform as well (though probably not a huge stage).

There is a good thimble routine in Ganson's Routined Manipulation II. Also, a book I found most helpful that I absolutely love is Loyd's Master Manipulation of Thimbles. However, the ultimate thimble book would probably be Digital Effects by Mogar.
My personal routine uses Berland's wooden thimbles from his Thimble Act. I paint one thimble white for a color change. I use the color change described in Routined Manipulation. I start with some thimble moves: vanishes, reappearances, and a color change and back. I then move to a thimble to pocket bit ending with a jumbo thimble. I then produce 4 thimbles on one hand via thimbalistic, remove them, then produce another 10 (one on every finger and both thumbs). |

I use two thimbles in my close up routine. The audience thinks there is only one and I continually produce thimbles and place them into my pockets only to show that they are empty at the end. It works for me because it is simple and it can be done at a moments notice.

I you work in close up than it is a lot easier to do work with thimbles because they are smaller and can be seen better. If the audience cannot see them on stage they will get bored trying to look for them

If you already have Jeff McBride's videos, you have a lot of information to pull from. Let your imagination and creativity flow.

Geoffrey Buckinghams Thimble routine (dancing thimbles) is outstanding. So is his other thimble routine. A must-have book for all manipulators

I also agree that Buckingham's routine and information is a great source.
Once again, I think the best ideas is not to go looking for routines, but to get the effects and the moves down and start to work on it by developing an act that works for you, fits your style, and is entertaining. Also keep in mind that 2-3 mins. of pure manipulation can get really boring really fast. You really want to change it up a bit and use transitions to make it interesting.

I feel like a broken record - I keep repeating how excellent these books are:
Pick up the 'Routined Manipulation' series (Part 1, Part 2 and Finale) by Lewis Ganson - each contain very good information on thimble manipulations. They are also very affordable! I should get paid for plugging Lewis Ganson's book, I recommend it to most people Kevin |

Shimada finishes his thimble act by popping a balloon and having ten thimbles appear.

Zombie:
I have seen him do this and it is quite striking of an appearance. It also shows you a nice way of thinking creatively and being different in your presentation.

Get Mike Cavney's Book "MagiComedy". He describes his routine he made up for the Magic Castle when he was young .
His Finale is a 10" Jumbo Thumble. Solid not cloth as in Geoffery Buckingham's CD and books. Bill |

For close up work, you can't do better than John Ramsay's routines. See also the combination of Ramsay and the aforementioned Rosini "Thimbles across" routine that John Carney does on his most recent DVD's.
For Stage, take a look at Mike Caveny's book "Magicomedy" of all places. He describes several novel effects with thimbles straight from his thimble act. These are extremely helpful in piecing together your own routine, since they provide variety and links between the major segments. Also, he describes his ending--the production of a solid jumbo thimble the size of a small bucket. (No, not from the body, and the table top is less than an inch thick) Finally, if you can, seek out video clips of the Japanese magicians who have some really amazing work on this. Shimada has already been mentioned. Also, I have seen one who enters holding a white candle with both hands at the base. The candle suddenly vanishes into his hands, which immediately pop open, revealing 10 white thimbles. Quite an attractive opener. Oops, I see Caveny's already been mentioned. Okay, I second that one.

Find out if www.stevensmagic still has any of Pete's Peeper, a stand up comedy thimble routine originally marketed by Ken Brooke (my routine). Perhaps will re-issue soon. Mike Skinner used it.

I personally use these gold thimbles that I got as a gift from a friend. I would however like to score some Fakini Thimbles.
