First let me state that I do not (currently) suffer from CAS.......(cup acquisition syndrome)...as it seems many on this forum do. I do,however, need a servicable set of cups. Standard disclaimers apply. Would like nice "feel appeal". Looks like Bazar de Magia makes a cheap copper set as does Morrissey. For a few bucks more the Magic Masters cup in brass is available. I do prefer the look of copper. Copper in the Penguin cups brings me right up to the century mark.
How do the 40 buck Bazar de Magias feel in tems of weight and balance to the aforementioned cups. I have searched the Café posts and it seems as though the consenus is that the Morriseys are too light. I have a set of aluminum that I never use do to lack of heft. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

That's not Magic Masters. It's Magic Makers. There is a big difference.
I would go with the Morrissey Copper cups -- Large Model over the others in this price range. If the Bazar De Magia cups are any heavier, it's only by a fraction of an ounce. If you want a really serviceable cup, see if you can get some of the Phoenix seconds from Seattle Magic. The attic space is limited, but they are built like a tank.

Right now there aren't any good copper sets on eBay, but they show up all the time.
I've gotten some great sets there. I never see any Galli-Galli sets there. Could be that nobody wants to get rid of them.

There is a set of Phoenix cups from Seattle Magic on Ebay. Search for item 6126193119
There is also another copper set, I do not know the maker. |

For the price range, the Phoenix Cups are hard to beat. Though there is not much room for nesting the balls when they are stacked, they are excellent in every other regard.

The phoenix cups are very solid but lack architecture.
Small attic space, small loads, but you can let the kids play with them and still use them that evening for a closeup show. I saw a set with case/wand/balls go for only $7x dollars on ebay this week. You can get seconds for $60. do not pay more. eventually you'll need something better but compared to the yucky stuff out there, the phoenix cups will treat you well.

You know, I've heard that the Penguin brass cups are inconsistent quality, but I like mine. I have a RNT that I like more, but frankly, I'm satisfied with both.

I have the Bazar de Magia cups and I like them. They are slightly larger than standard cups, but will not take a fully sized tennis ball. But they seem well made.

I like the BDM cups as well. Greatly prefer them over Morissey. More weight, and a better top well. I had problems with my first set of Penguins, and they replaced them. The set I received was still not perfect, but I do like the way they handle. You can find them in brass on Ebay for $45. I use a lacrosse ball for the final load, and it does not look like it could come from the Magic Makers cup. The phoenix seconds, as previously mentioned, are the most indestructable. The best advise, if possible, is to find someone who owns various sets and handle them for yourself.

One problem with the Penguin and the MM cups is that they will not consistently take a lacrosse ball.
Part of this has to do with the cups, the other with some lacrosse balls.

I think Kingry gives good advice -- if you can, try some of these sets out before you buy, because it's a very personal preference.
You should also take a look at Jim Riser's comments and suggestions on Cup & Ball sets at http://www.jamesriser.com/Cups/SelectingCups.html Having said all this, my own opinion is that the Morrissey cups don't appear to have a deep enough (or any) top well. I have the Bazar de Magia cups, which are nicely made, but a bit on the light side. Still, for the price, they perform and hold up OK. I also like their design. But this is a personal opinion, and your mileage may vary, as they say. Good Luck! SETH

If you are doing street work, the Riser Jumbos are excellent, and so are the Babe cups by Gary Animal. I got a set of them in the mail day before yesterday.
I have posted pictures at the museum. BTW, does anyone have a link for Seattle Magic? I have googled extensively for them and come up dry. Update: I have bad news. Seattle Magic has closed. However, Tom still sells his Phoenix cups on eBay. Also, I will be ordering some sets from him shortly. In a couple of weeks, I will be offering "Street Performer Sets" on my Adesso Verlag web site. These will be for buskers, not David Blaine wannabees.

Bill, I searched 89 Search Engines and couldn't find Seattle Magic.
Maybe try contacting a magician from Seattle and see if they know. |

They aren't on any of the search engines. Tom Franks has some kind of a geocities address or something like that.

I have a set of The Riser Mini-Cups. They are really great for me and I love them. One of the funnier things I have come across is when I use them in public it seems all of the ladies think they are just so cute.
For a final load I use different color handballs or mini basket balls , soccer balls or tennis balls I found at a local pet shop. They are nice to cary. Small fit in my coat pocket and not too bluky. They don't come with a case but I found a crown royal bag works just fine. Right now I am using 3/4 red knit balls. But plan in the near future plan to purchase some 7/8 Mike Rogers Mini Baseballs. - Richard |

The 7/8 inch Mike Rogers baseballs are too large for these cups if you do a three ball display on top of them. Otherwise they would work fine.

Found a great case for mine. A velvet bag from Giraldi's chocolate in San Francisco. Like a glove!
