Has anyone heard of Houdini claiming to be an Australian early in his career(Oct. 1898)?

No, but I understand he learned rope ties and handcuff manipulation basics from an Australian performer named Dexter.

The only place I remember a reference to him was in the Houdini biography, "Houdini-The Man Who Walked Through Walls" by William Lindsay Gresham, though other biogs may have alluded to him (I'll have to peek into M. Christopher's ,"Houdini-The Untold Story").

Houdini was the first person (on record) to have flown and airplane in Austraila, supposedly someone else flew the day before but Houdini got the publicity and the credit.

Houdini was actually born in budapest, hungary, but moved to the states when he was very young, where he later began his career as a magician.

Houdini never knew his true birthplace or birthdate during his lifetime.
He assumed he was born in Appleton, Wisconsin; and adopted April 6 as his birthday, as that was when his mother wrote to him when he was on tour. Research after his death revealed records in Budapest on the birth of Erik Weisz on March 24, 1874. Steve

Houdini got the credit because he had the proof. The other person who tried to claim he was first in flight, came many years after the fact. I guess Australian Urban Legend is around, like we have it here.

Defries flew in Australia before Houdini but Houdini did a longer flight (length and time) and only really Houdini is remembered. But then again Houdini had the influence and the prior reputation.

I think that was the conditions. The other guy just didn't come close to meeting minimums for sustained, powered flight. To the victor goes the spoils.

How does one set rules/regulations if one never flown there before.

They had the rules even before the Wright brothers did it. Capish? Something like the requirements they had for the recent private space launch.
