I recently spoke to a sales rep at a large internet audio store. He sells both the countryman and the DPA. He recommended the countryman due to the fact that the DPA is based out of the country and getting service is a bit of a pain. The price for both is the same so I know his comment wasn't based on price.

Ken,
Look on the bright side, $44.00 is a lot better than buying a whole new mic. |

Exactly Matt. I loved my DPA headset but went it went bad they never could get it back to norm again. I don't paying 45.00 a year for a cord if the mic does me well through all the shows.
I sure there are better mics out there. But for me the confront of the Countryman is far better than any other that I have seen. Ken |

And from knowing Ken for around 4 years now, I know that he does a ton of shows.

My problems started when we bought six Countryman E6 mics for our large rental/show business. Within a couple of months, all but one had irrepairably broken. The problem is that the capsule (the litlle bit at the end of the mic that picks up the voice) is attache to the rest of the mic by way of what carpenters call a "butt joint". This means that two flat pieces are butted up against each other and glued together with no other means of attachement or support. When someone tries to re-aim the mic closer to the face, most folks tend to grasp the boom arm between their thumb & index finger, and then apply pressure toward the face with the middle finger. This puts too much strain on the butt joint and the capsule snaps off. This cannot be repaired. As I said, 5 of our 6 mics broke in this way within the first couple of months, and the last one broke a few months later, also in the same way. Admitedly, we RENTED these to people, so they had to be adjusted by every user, and renters can be kinda rough on things, but since they broke so easily, we decided to remove them from our inventory entirely. Gentle users will almost certainly have better experiences, but there's no question the E6 if fragile. My problems with the E6 were also experienced by ALL of the other rental shops in my market, and I heard the same from folks in other large North American markets (NYC, LA, Chicago, Dallas). Andy Levis also had a lot of problems while touring with with the lav version of the E6 (the B6), and I think it was their connectors and their customer service. (Correct me if I'm wrong, Andy.) Recently, we bought some DPA 4067's because they are much more robust, they sound better than the E6, and they are almost as small. Since our application for these mics is primarily for speeches and corporate presenters, we chose black ones, because they look sleek & high-tech. By the way, when worn, I think the E6 and the DPA look pretty close to the same, when compared to full-size headsets. Unless you're really close to the performer, you usually can't tell that the DPA comes up behind both ears. Cheers from Toronto!

We have just tested side by side, both the countryman and the DPA. We are going with the DPA. The sound is better and with it going over both ears, it does not move at all. We move around quite a bit and the DPA never budges and that's even during my straightjacket escape. The countryman being over one ear always forced me to tape it anyways, so it didn't pivot on the one ear piece. We were trying to get away from taping our mics, which we have done for 3 years.
If you are serious, DPA will send you out a mic to try. It costs $25 plus shipping. You get it for 15 days. If you purchase one then the $25 goes toward your purchase price. Bruce at DPA was kind enough to send us 2 mics...both a cardiod and an omni. This has all taken place over the past week. I'm glad of the timing so that we may add our experiences to this thread. Yup, Dan is right, I've had issues with the B6, the E6's lavalier brother, both from end suppliers and direct from Countryman's repair shop. I'd go for the DPA.
Kevin--even if you're not taping the headset itself, you may still want a small bit of tape on the back of the neck just at/below the collar line. After the mic's on, tilt the head all the way forward so you're looking down at the ground, and put on the piece of tape. This lets enough slack into the cable so that you can freely move your head, but makes sure that excess cable won't pull out of the shirt and "bubble" or loop over the top, which is both uncomfortable and visually distracting. --A, merrily mixing Muppets in Fairfax, VA (next week in Louisville, KY)

I just purchased a DPA 4065. This is a great microphone. I highly recommend it. Andy, thanks for the tip on taping down the cable behind the neck.

Thanks Guys, this is very valuable information. I personally know Ken Scott and John Bundy.
One of the problems I know about myself is that I am not "careful" as I should with my electronic products and fragile is a "scary" word for me. I truly can understand why Ken works well for him. Like John Bundy, I too do Halloween shows and a lot more active on stage than my children's parties. I will definatatly look at the DPA 4066.
