Having worked for the past 18 years as a magician lugging equipment and props, I decided last year to attempt to compile a pure Mentalism show. I “played” with mentalism and did some mental magic in my show already, but found much of mentalism to weighty and boring to perform and it was difficult to find performance tips. Already owning and having read PME and 13 Steps as well as Completely Cold, The Dance, Theater of the mind and Richard Webster’s audio material on Cold reading, I look forward to video teaching in mentalism with great anticipation. I have purchased and viewed nearly every release on the subject. I categorically believe that Richard Osterlind has released the strongest, and most practical mental effects available. This past week my Mentalist show debuted at West Point Military Academy for an audience of about 70 cadets and their Commander, the Commanders wife and their Sergeant. As it turned out every effect I used was hand picked from Mind Mysteries and EMMM. The program was rehearsed every day for two weeks preceding the show and tested on a live audience for 3 days before the show. The result was stunning. My audiences could not have been more amazed and entertained, I couldn’t have been more pleased and the Cadets were stunned and truly enjoyed the show. I owe Richard Osterlind a debt of gratitude for his teaching. The price I paid for the DVDs is miniscule in comparison to the wealth of information I have absorbed. The only problem I see is that this material is so practical, well covered and well taught that it may create an army of Mentalists.

I couldn't agree more with Carlo! Just received the DVD's yesterday, and personally (from someone relatively new to mentalism) I'm greatly impressed by how "clean" and "pure" these classic effects are.
In many ways, I find them much more impactful then some of the more sophisticated effects/routines I see marketed today. While I'm familiar with most of the routines, and yes, I do have the "core books" in my library, its wonderful to see these effects performed by Richard. The impact on me? -- I'll be spending much less time/money looking for the "next great thing," and more time cuddled up with the books in my library.... Thank you Richard and Jim for reminding us why the "masters" are considered the "masters!" Yours in Magic Scott |

Scott...you say you have them in your "core" library. I'm very curious with this question, and it will apply to everyone, not just Scott.
For anyone purchasing the DVD's or watching them at a friends house...have you studied the effects from Annemann and Corrinda. I can't say I've even looked through "13 Steps" because I haven't. BUT, I have read through "Practical Mental Effects" over and over, and always find something that jumps out at me. I have used this book for the last few years as the book I always refer back to, to see if I'm missed something. I'm very curious now how many are dying to see these effect after only reading about them over and over, OR are people buying these DVDs because they know they will be a great set of DVDs to learn from. I think to me, they will be a nice compliment to the reading. John Eddington |

There is so much in the classics and I have only touched the tip of the iceberg. I would also suggest that you check out the complete Jinx as there is so much more in those volumes than in Practical Mental Effects. Also, I just love the "flavor" of seeing the pages of the newsletter as it originally was published! Thank you. Richard |

However, very often just reading an effect without ever seeing it performed, especially for budding mentalists, one might question the impact or practicality, or ability to execute the more audacious effects. Being able to see Richard use these effects on an audience and listening to him speak about the nature of mentalism IS a power that written words can’t often convey. I have read Corinda many times and truthfully found the audacity of some of the material daunting. This is because I look at it through Magician’s eyes. It’s the reason I found Larry Becker’s material more suited to me. But Richard Osterlind has opened my thinking and attitude in an entirely new direction. That, I think, is the power of the visual teaching media. Children aren’t handed books in Kindergarten and told: based on the information in these books become a literate educated individual. Teachers teach them. Why is learning magic and mentalism so different? I propose that it is not. 13 Steps and Practical Mental Effects are the text-books, but Richard Osterlind is the professor.

I agree with you, Carlo...you better watch what you say though about Richard being the "professor." You'll have Dai Vernon turning in his grave

Carlo, I had found myself reading many of the effects, but not necessarily appreciating the impact they'd have on the audience. Not saying I'll jump up and begin using every one of the effects on the DVDs, but gives me a new appreciation of many of them.

Although this is my first post. I have been doing mentalism for some time. I have quite a few of Richards products, I have found all your views very helpful and look forward to the DVDS.
It is fantastic that Richard Osterlind be the one to take these methods into the future. This is my opinion. |

I've read through 6 pages of this post. I feel very compelled to contribute.
Perhaps I'm too idealistic here. I've only been performing magic for about 2 years. One thing I hope to always do is to "be a sponge", in regards to learning. I invested in RO's MM set. Yes, the routines are outstanding. What made an impression on me was his referenes to Tarbell. I had other magic books, (M. Wilson, Royal Road, etc.). I may have given Tarbell a look. However, after hearing Mr. Osterlind's reference to Tarbell lit my fire. I now have most of the Tarbell course. Man, there are some nuggets in those volumes that are killer! The point is....if the viewer of ETMMM is wise, they will also seek out the works of the people he presented. I cannot speak for Mr. Osterlind, but I think it's safe to say that this could be one of his motives. I for one am encouraged by that to study the printed word. I am looking forward to the series. My local "brick & mortar" shop, The Cuckoo's Nest, will be getting my business. Yeah, no signed poster...but you have to keep those shops around. That's another post for another time. Larry |

Calenig,
Thank you. You are too kind. But it's a "lesson" I didn't expect to learn. Gladly, I have. |

Ok, I finally received my set.
Got the time to watch it over the weekend. These videos are delightful. In my honest opinion, they are a fantastic companion to the texts like 13 steps, PME and The Jinx. My only complain (which is not a complain) is that, it is a shame that we need to watch a professional performing these effects to believe and understand how great and powerful they play to an audience. A great set of videos, the advise is fantastic. Osterlind performs some of the effects EXACTLY as they appeared on the original texts, leaving room for your own presentations (I loved this) and for some others he adds his own touches and subtleties. There's even a fantastic lesson on presentation on Video # 4, check it and you'll understand. Great Stuff. But... please do not think that because these DVDs use the "Easy To Master" brand , you'll be doing this to your friends after a couple of hours. If you are purchasing this because you thought that the "Easy To Master Card Miracles" were powerful and easy enough to present after a couple hours of practice to your friends and family, you'll be highly dissapointed with these videos. These are professional effects that demand THE MOST of your performing and acting skills and should not be taken lightly in any way. Lets read the books, Re-read the books and then re-read the books again. Then, refer to the videos. And , as a side comment : PLEASE , lets develop our own styles. There is a single Richard Osterlind, a single Banachek and a single Max Maven, all of them performing in their own UNIQUE styles, and that's the way it should be. |

Mr Osterlind is certainly a wonderful teacher, I wonder when he will make Principal or do you call it head master? He gives the best home work.

Osterlind has the same kind of charm that Kreskin has but without the hyperactive geekiness! (please don't get me wrong! NOBODY on the planet worships George Kresge Jr. more than me!)
Osterlind is talented, charming and friendly! A very "real" person. Respectfully, Paul Pacific

Osterlind's videos are the best you can get to start out in mentalism. Come to think of it, I now have enough material for a lifetime.

I spoke with Sandra Sisti today. She created the bag for Richard that he used in 7 Keys To Baldpate. She is making them for sale (I bought mine from her and it's beautiful).
I had posted this previously, but her email was down and she wasn't getting orders. If anyone would like to contact her on that, her email is Phoenix2658@aol.com. Rick
