Just to reiterate a comment I made in the DVD/Video section -
One of the big publishers really ought to put together a Lennart Green big hardback book and give his card magic genius the attention - and indeed historical documentation - it deserves. |

A problem a lot of publishers face is that once material appears on video it tends to hurt the sales of a book published subsequent to them. As a result, most publishers are hesitant to work on a book project with the material already out on video.
While I would like to havea book of Green's work, I think that video may have been a better option for him. His work reminds me somewhat of Dominique Duvivier's: It's very idiosyncratic, and grounded in the performer's own style. In print, Duvivier's stuff does not tend to come across as well as it does when he's doing it. I think the same is the case with Lennart. The majority of both of their material I think is not easily adaptable to most people's styles. |

But I would still love to have a Lenart Green book!

You said it Aaron...Hardly ever see anyone performing Lennart's stuff even though 6 dvds worth of it is out.
Not that it isn't good stuff, it's great groundbreaking stuff but so entwined with his personality it's hard for others to use. Which is probably a testament to his creativity and originality and they way it should be... |

Reminds me of a comment Dariel Fitzkee made in one of his books. To paraphrase Fitzkee: A classic is a classic because anyone can do it.

I totally disagree with the above two posts.
Lennart Green's awesome work on the lateral palm, the mirror count, snap deal, windmill arc, incredible false cut and shuffle work (and much more) is universally applicable. His techniques are idiosyncratic and 'entwined with his personality' only in the sense that HE CREATED THEM. Sure, he has a unique drole performing style but how does that invalidate or somehow limit your possible application of say the 'Swedes Deal'? If you spent the time mastering his lateral palm stuff alone it would - no matter what your 'personality' (!?) - completely revolutionize the way you work and the things that you can achieve with cards. This is not to deny that his techniques are indeed difficult and require effort- but then what of value does not? 'A classic is a classic because anyone can do it' - if you find the miriad of sleights too intimidating then check out some of Lennart's fabulous self-working routines.. I think that a great tome of Lennart Green's card magic is an absolute must for the magic community and I constantly look at my library of classic card magic and think that there is a necessary classic absent from the collection... |
