Hello to all cardicians.
I am planning to submit a design in a local paper factory who makes cards in bulk. If I use the design of Jerry's Nuggets and the Golden Nuggets cards and have them printed in our local factory, will it be illegal or not? I love the back designs of these cards so much that I want to have an exact replica of it even if the stock is not the same. So, what do you think? illegal or not? |

Hi
I think you will find their designs copyrighted. Paula

Illegal.
Because it is a physical design, it is automatically copyrighted. |

Hi Ramon,
Yeah, you will find that the designs are copyrighted. Duplicating them without proper permission would certainly be ill-advised. |

Depends on if the cards are still available in print!
If noone is making these cards then you could apply for the printing rights. Also. If you own a deck and it becomes unavailable then you can print to replace cards. you could extend this to the whole deck with extreme liberties. Look at the copyright issues for the Philippines, you may be ok.

I'm not really sure how copyright laws work in the Philippines. I would advise you to check it out with the authorities before you procede.

Thank you all for the advice. These cards just look so cool. I'll try to check the copyright issues.

Yet we get people who re-print Bicycle backs for gaffed cards all the time in North America.

Do they gain permission, or just go and do it?

I have just gone through my prop box and found a deck of Gaffs made by the USPC.

A large man in France owns the world's supply of Jerry's Nuggets cards. He is contolling the supply/demand which is why they go for $25 per deck on ebay.
That seems to be a good reason for you to print up some decks for yourself. Just don't mention it again and no one will ever know or care. Good luck. |

The way to do it is to find out who printed them in the first place. Perhaps USPC did make the Jerry's Cards. You could then ask them to print some for you.
USPC does print gaffed cards on special order. Also, there are companies advertising in Genii that print cards to order. Why not CHANGE THE DESIGN slightly? And have them made to order? It might be cool to be "Ramon's Nuggets" ?? Not cheap, though

One packet trick it so cheap you can clearly see that they scanned in the back and just reprinted it like a .jpg. Of course, this is quite illegal, but I wonder if the USPC feels it's worth the trouble of hunting these small-time printers down? Also, if you think about it, they may not have a problem with it because if you buy a gaffed card with a red Bicycle back, then you are obviously going to add it to your real Bicycle deck, and in the long run that will keep you loyal to the brand. Just a thought. |

How about if I let a company print my own design I made? still illegal? I'd like to modify it and put Ramon's Nuggets on it.

Any time you change it even a little bit it now becomes legal. I heard this straight from Bicycle themselves. I was going to reprint some cards that were just like bikes but had different designs in the background. They said as long as I change it, then its good to go. It also was cheaper then buying them on normal bikes. If your wanting to copy the nuggets, I would be careful. If your wanting to sell them be very careful. If your just trying to get the look just for you and your own cards then you might be ok. I still would check first.

I've never handled Jerry's nugget cards. But I think there is more to them than the cool designs. Some guys say they are great for doubles, faros etc. You may want to consider stock, finish and other factors also.

I've heard, though I can't confirm it, that Jerry's Nuggets, Golden Nuggets, and a few other stocks can no longer be manufactured for environmental reasons. I'm not sure of the specifics.
Also, be advised that derivative works ARE protected in many cases, so it may not be enough to change a back design "slightly" and go to press. Just because USPC might not care, doesn't mean Jerry's Nugget won't. Jason
