There's always a good argument for having the spectator/subject/whatever reveal their number (or phrase, etc..) first -
Obstensively, you cannot write the number down after putting down the pencil or pen, to change your selection. It may as well be carved into granite, as far as they know. However, it would be possible for the spectator to lie about the selection. What if, and this is from the audience point of view, they were to choose "99", and mentally "transmit" that to you (if told to as part of the routine), and then when you flip your card over first and it says "99", they say, "oh no, my number was 46." ? How do you "prove" otherwise ? Not that you want to pre-accuse your spectators of lying of course, or as even capable of it, but it just makes so much more sense from an everyday point of view, to reveal the spoken before the written. There's less dependence on the spectator. - this also works in reverse as well - In fact, now that I think about it, this is an even better reason, by far: It eliminates the possiblity of using a stooge, from the audience point of view. Otherwise, how do they know the guy isn't just agreeing with you no matter what you say ? If you use that reasoning, you're not challenging the veracity of the spectator and insulting him by putting such "safeguards" in place to prevent him from lying. It's now clearly you on one side, and they on the other. No ambiguity on the part of the spectator/subject. OTOH, if you were to have the spectator just silently write it down, and "mentally transmit" it to you, and you then apparently wrote it down, this argument could conceivably fly out the window and you'd find yourself in a pickle.. so always keep it verbal, unless you have a different method.

An historical note: Swami gimmicks are used by those who do "guess your age, guess your weight" - often found in traveling sideshows.
You have to give it away to keep it.

Ustaad described one that is both excellent and simple to make in the "Howie Diddit" area of the Secret Sessions topic. It works marvelously.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

Any thought on grease versus pencil lead?

The leads that I have used I have found, at times, to actually stick and grab at the paper sometimes. I've found grease pencil to be smoother to write with, though I would prefer standard pencil leads.

I prefer standard pencil on a Vernet TT...smooth and easy to use...and easy to steal and ditch quickly.

I use The Swami Gimmick by Sam Dalal (it's a package with a booklet and 4 NWs) and I have a problem with it: when it comes to adjusting the wings of the NW at some point they just break. That happens because of the repeated wiggling that I do of the wings to find the correct tightness of the gimmick, I know, but I just can't find the correct tightness-balance when I'm wearing it. Sometimes it pops off because too loose and sometimes it's just too tight.
My question is this: can anybody tell me how to adjust it so it fits good and without breaking it ? Also... how the hell do you put a new pencil point in ? It's not easy as I thought. Thank You |

I am experimenting with Dalal's Swami right now. I received them today. I have read somewhere else here (can't remember which thread) that some guys add something sticky to the wings (wax, blu-tak etc) to keep them in place. Someone else suggested roughing up the wings a little to create more friction. I'm also having trouble keeping it in place. My nail isn't very long at the moment so I may have to add something sticky to get the ball rolling. I've found that it helps a little by putting it on more to one side.
So far, I've had the best results by narrowing the angle between the wings and the lead - making it more acute and wearing it off centre. As for putting in new lead, the booklet suggests widening the hole with a narrow tipped screwdriver and then crimping the tube around the lead once it's in place. I haven't tried this yet.

I've always used a simple boon writer, but I never really liked them (and hence rarely use a swami). I have two undernail writers, but I have a rather nasty habit of biting my nails....
On that note, I've considered trying out a band writer for a bit (just type it in on Amazon).

That was a great read, thanks I am considering purchasing a swami gimmick as well, I have had good success with normal thumb tips so I think the TT versions are the way to go although nailwriters do seem appealing. From the recommendations on the forum, it looks like the pencil lead ones are more practical.

For those of you interested in a thumb tip swami gimmick that writes in ink, consider The Snake Charmer.

This is just my personal opinion but... Nothing is going to work any better than what you have just purchased from Carlyle. Although this is my opinion, if you read through the many threads on here you will see that it is also the same opinion that many others have as well. The Boon and Bug writers will not be anywhere near as stable on your thumb as the New Style Thumb Writer. They feel like they are always about to fall off your thumb and rock around like they are doing a balancing act on a ball(your thumb tip). I think you will wind up feeling like you have spent money for nothing after you get them and try them... I know I did. I've tried everything out there when it comes to this type of gadget and still from time to time have to purchase something to just see if it is any better and every time... I go right back to the Dr Crow Writer/New Style Thumb Writer. It's the very same writer that Bob Cassidy makes and uses... and that should speak volumes ! |

You right Taterini . Carlyle's tool is amazing and very useful . I was reading a lot good words also about Lincoln's Boon . It is magnetic and think could work also very good on close up and stage sytuation but not have this yet .

Just to keep the record straight- my friend Ed Carlyle sells his "New Style Thumb Writer" with my permission, since I'm the one who created it. It is identical to the Dr. Crow writer.

Ed Carlye is a good man.
After dealing with him recently, he will absolutely get any business I can give him. But not exclusively because he's a good chap. (Does not hurt though) He falls into the John Riggs catagory with quality, thought and practicality. (I'm just waking up, I won't expect a Pulitzer over this post) Anyway, I'm glad Bob points people to Ed. He's doing anyone a favor, that may not have been aware of Ed and his products.
