I am going to make some busking or street tables soon. What height from the ground makes the most sense. Scotty York and Bob Sheets made their tables 36.5" high. At one point many years ago I had discussed building some tables to their specifications but it never got off the ground.
What height??? And square or rectangular and what size. I personally favor a table that is 42" high with a surface about 24" x 24" but I am larger than average bear. Id appreciate any comments along these lines. thanks, -=tabman http://tabmantables.com

I see after browsing around the Café that busking tables are such an individual thing. It's exciting to see all the different ideas. I think I'll just mess around in my shop and see what I come up with. I appreciate the emails with ideas. I'll post a picture when I get done with it. Thanks.

Tabman:
The table I use is about 33 inches high. This puts the table top at exactly the right height for me to use my pouches as a servante. It also covers cup loads very well.

I too use one that is 33" high. To me it's the perfect height.

thanks bill and deception for the feedback on 33". I've got a couple ideas in motion here working on them in between trying to keep tabman stuff on hocus-pocus.com's shelves. I've had one particular idea that really interests me but I'm not sure how practical it is. I should have a prototype in about two weeks. It might be good but I just don't know at this point. Ive gotta make one or two to find out from the guys like you at the fairs and on the streets.

Tabman,
I'm 5'7" and use a 33" tray stand with the School for Scoundrels table, which has a 24x36 working surface. I definitely prefer a surface that wide for my routines. |

Curt, that's the second time today that someone has mentioned the 24 x 36 size working surface. That's not that large when you think about it.

No, it's not, but it's a 50% increase in square footage over a 24 x 24 table. That extra space makes a big difference. If you make the table larger than 24 x 36, you're starting to get into stability versus weight issues. I'd be very happy with a 36 x 48 table that was both sturdy and lightweight enough to carry comfortably.

Thanks guys, it sounds like it will take several different sizes to satisfy everyone. I personally like the idea of the larger surface described by Curt and Deception. My question now is, what kind of and how many props are you carrying in addition to having to lug a table?? How about carrying bags and cases??? I can make a nice sturdy table using lightweight materials. How much weight are yall carrying around in addition to a table??? I'll be back in a while, gotta do some work. I'm trying to finish up five chest of destinys this week then I will tackle this issue.

As far as busking, I have everything packed away in a Doctor's Bag.

The Dr. bag sounds practical and easy to carry. So the table is the big thing to carry??? Do yall set up in one spot or stay on the move???

The table is the big thing to carry. I use a camera bag with cups, balls, rope, tin snips, cards, a TT, and so on.
Portland forces street performers to move every hour, so I do have to pack up and move frequently. In other venues you rotate with other performers and need to break down as well. |

So camera bag or dr. bag in one hand and table under the other arm you head to the next location and set up and do it again. much like an artist carries his or her paint kit, canvas and easel. light weight is important, yet study but easy to set up and tear down and with economy too. thanks very much for helping!!

Yes, the table would be THE big thing to carry. Lightweight and easy to break down would be pluses. Maybe a "pouch" to carry portables? Don't know if it's feesable...

I'll probably make a nice black canvas bag to carry/store the table in. There are several ways to go the most obvious being the tried and true X table configuration but there are a couple of other options I'm working on as well. Maybe between several table designs there might be something that would fit in. I'm really liking that 24 x 36 inch top. It really makes sense. I'm also looking at an idea with a smaller top about 18 x 32. I really like making magic tables for some reason having made my first one when I was about 11 years old. I'll have two or three prototypes ready in about two weeks - at least one of them and possibly two. I'm almost caught up with my backlog - at least gaining ground.
what about the surface. plain wood?? wool gaming cloth??? indoor outdoor carpet??? stuff like formica and leather, even though I put leather tops on my close up tables, is really heavy. plain wood with a close up pad??? -=tabman

Hey Tabman,
I work on a 24 X 36 surface. However, I am going to reduce that to a 20 X 30. It does pose a bit of a mobility problem to transport a table top that large. I have worked on my friend's table top which is approximately 20 X 30. It did not limit my cups routine in the way I thought it would. As far as wood and surfacing, I now use particle board. I have used several different woods. I have found particle board to be heavy. As well, it does not warp (at least not yet, and I have used this top for 2 years). I use vehicle headliner as a surface. It is a soft surface like a close up pad, looks nice, and weather has not been as harsh to it as I'd expected. Jim |

Thanks Jim for your input. 20 x 30 is the same ratio as 24 x 36. must be something about this 2 to 3 ratio rectangle that feels right or perhaps it's an efficient useage of materials. I personally like a little more width. this is freaking me out. I just ran the numbers on the 16 x 24 size I use for my close up tables and the ratio is 2 to 3 as well, exactly the same. holey jamokers!!! just when you think there's nothing left to learn we have inadvertantly discovered the magicians table formula. headliner material is very inventive. particle board is too heavy for me. I use finnish baltic birch. it's lightweight and strong and takes glue well. drawback is I have to order it.
yow!!!! -=tabman

Tabman,
How does the gaming wool wear? I've heard from several people that tables that you made for them ten years ago are still in great shape. The gaming wool is lighter than the hides and I always liked the green color. 24"X36" seems like a good size with an X stand. Keep us posted. I'm in!! Take Care, Vincent |

I personally am fond of neoprene. It's lightweight, looks nice, easy to work with, Non-wrinkling, 99% non-slip, Won't attract hair, fluff, etc.
