I had a great time in the shop today. In addition to having Gloria, my better half, snap a picture of me in the paint booth for a new avatar, I worked out the final details of the Tabman Café Table Kit.
First here's a pic of it with a 47 lb concrete block on the top. The table didn't even groan. I have (really) a bucket of horseshoes and it weighed 23 lbs, two ten pound watermellons weigh 23 lbs and the only cannonball I have weighs four pounds so I went with the concrete. The table itself as shown (minus the concrete block) weighs just a little less than 10 lbs. The tray also acts as a brace and it is very solid. You will love how it all goes together. The legs actually are attached to the table top not just resting on a stand. You can pick the table up by the top and move it if need be. Also, you can use the top by itself it you wanted to do that too. It breaks down in under a minute and sets up just as fast. I've been working on this awhile and I'm very happy with the results. -=tabman

Gee, how long is your offer good for (Wife says I need to wait until after Christmas (or get rid of the Porper Miser's Wand)? Too bad I can't just get rid of the wife (I've tried).

There's no limitation on time for that offer. It's no problem. I appreciate yalls advice and participation in this discussion. Signing in every day and getting to read through the comments kept pushing me forward once I finally made the decision to actually move this project from the notebook to the work bench.

Would the support legs be more sturdy if there was a beam across the bottom like the School for Scoundrels table?

On 2004-12-09 08:20, Tophie asked: Hi Tophie, I haven't seen the SFS table but I wrestled with the bracing of the legs and the beam across the bottom looked clumsy to me. That's where the shelf comes in and the 3/4" hardwood rod at the pivot point. It's plenty strong and sturdy. I'm not opposed to putting a "beam" across the bottm if someone wanted it but I think it would just add weight and not much else. It's anchored at 12 places in the top 22" of the legs. Part of my inspiration has been this illustration from an old broadside from the 1800s that I've been using since 1993. Check out the legs on this 100+ year old illustration: Thanks for asking. I always welcome a chance to rethink every aspect of my work. Have a great day!!! -=tabman

Tabman,
As for a name suggestion, How about the "Pull Tab" table? (especially if you could work some spring loaded wheels onto two of the legs and be able to pull it behind you like airport luggsage. Come to think of it, Any chance of getting some kind of hook-up arrangement (i.e., small eye-bolts on the underside of the tray when fully assembled) on it so that you could attach your magic bag to it with bunge cords and wheel it around behind you. And, perhaps the top part of the legs could become the "handle". Never mind....I'm just babbling. It just seemed like a good idea at the time. Mike

Well, sure you could do that. It would be easy enough and the table could be easily modified for a bag. That's a great idea!!!

Tabman,
I said in my prior post: "Come to think of it, Any chance of getting some kind of hook-up arrangement (i.e., small eye-bolts on the underside of the tray when fully assembled) on it so that you could attach your magic bag to it with bunge cords and wheel it around behind you." (see bolded underside reference) This remark was not very clear. What I meant to indicate was that when the table is fully assembled the eyebolts would be on the underside, hidden and out of the way (unless you could also have them conveniently arranged to secure a servant). My original use for the eyebolts was when the table is dis-assembled and you would be "carting it about". It was then that I thought the eye-bolts would come into play (namely as points or attachments for your bag and miscellaneous hardware). Here's another hair-brained idea: Could the fold-out legs be constructed in such a way that when folded one of the cross-bars between two of the legs is about 2" higher than the other (or the other leg crossbar folds inside of the higher leg 2" lower)? Why? Because when folded in that manner, the crossbar on the higher two legs becomes the "carrying" "toting" handle for the whole contraption as you pull it behind you. Such an arrangement might require that the table top be built up 2 " higher on one end with a 2" shim in order to keep the table top level when assembled in the open position. These "suggestions" are NOT intended as criticism of your design (which, BTW, I think is great). I am merely throwing out ideas that you might wish to consider in an effort to make the table more conveniently portable for the street worker. Finally, either talk directly with Tedb (Koz) on this forum OR buy the Cellini DVD volume from the "Art of Street Performing" where Koz describes his streeet table set-up and shows how he attaches a servant to the back of his table with bungie cords. (I think it is Volume 2.) Its a great idea. He uses eye-bolts that attach the servant when the table is in use and which also provides the anchor points for the table when collapsed and in "travel mode". Taking Koz' ideas (with permission, of course) and adding spring loaded locking wheels would, I believe, make this table design of yours into the ultimate portable table. Again, congratulations on a fine designed table that, from all appearances, is also one fine piece of craftsmanship. Mike

Thank you, Turk, for the kind words about the Café Table design, and for your suggestions too. Perhaps Koz and I will cross paths sometime. I used to work for Paul Kozak who hosts the World's Greatest Magic Show in Vegas and his nickname is KOZ as well.
I've been making magic tables commercially since the early 1970s and I really enjoy doing it. It's one of those things that's hard to explain. I mean, why would someone choose this path, seems strange to me that growing up in the south Georgia cotton patch I would develop a passion for this??? I really like magic and hanging out with magicians of all walks. And I do a little card and coin type magic myself but my main thing in magic is making tables and cool accessories. Fact is, Frank Starsini and I are planning a brain storming session after the first of the year to work out a hookup for his Poacher's Pouch and I have put together several different table servantes and chair servantes over the years. Right now I am working on a table design from my notebook that works off a nice but simple wooden folding chair. This may be the unit for your wheels. It's a neat concept and the performer can use the chair which is quite sturdy up to a couple hundred pounds (I weigh in at 250 and it holds me) to stand on to build a crowd or hawk anything. Onward and onward!! -=tabman

Well Tabman,
Franks Pouches are great! I am devising a way to use it as a servante as well for the SFS Table. Gee, if you are looking for volunteers for your magic think tank, please think of me. David

I may be odd man out, but I like a higher table. I like a working surface at about waist height, at or just below the beltline. I think this would be taller than 34" for most, closer to 40". I see 3 benefits for me personally:
1 I never have to bend to reach or place my hand flat on the table 2 It make ditches in a servante cleaner 3 It keep my ?>*&% out of the visual frame Am I just off in my staging ? |

Depends on your height and stance...

I agree, but 33" is pretty short legged. If your pants inseam is say 7"-8" below the waist line, one would have to have a 26" or shorter inseam for a 33" table to hit their waist. I'm 5'8" and have a 31" inseam.
I should caveat this.. I am assuming this table is for stand up presentations My question is... do you operate (ditches, steals, etc.) with the table top below you waist ? |

Thanks for the kind words about my new table wcb39. I enjoyed making it for you. Cherry is one of my favorite merican hardwoods. To comment on the 33" height; I surveyed a number of street performers and 33" seemed to be the median height that magicians wanted. In fact, when I measured Bob Sheets and Scotty York's tables when I started this journey some years ago was a little over 33" (33.5") but of course the tables can be made to work at any height up to about 40".

I have made lots of table. Personally I love a table that is an oak top with that uses a stand such as a keyboard stand. These are available for around $20 and are adjustable from 30-45 inches. the problem is they work best in the thirtys as the taller the skinnyier.....however it is verry professional looking
