Hello,

Time and time again I read on the Café how the material on the video I sent out to some friends was very lame indeed.

While I will admit the video is of news clips and shows I did over many years and is not professionaly edited, etc, I will add that the video contains the following escapes live and as they occured:

- Milk can escape
- Air tight body bag locked in bank vault (real challenge)
- Escape from strait jacket tied to cross loaded with 5 pounds of explosive gunpowder and 1 minute fuse (an original routine one of my so called critics here on The Café has already stolen)
- Multpile handcuff escape with NO TOOLS as performed on live news show
- Escape from plexiglass box with snake wrapped around my neck and chains, etc...
- Challenge escape from a jail at the Winnipeg Police museum
- Challenge escape from antique handcuffs and thumbcuffs from the same museum collection
- Escape from rope tie and handcuffs tied inside a canvas bag which was then locked into an air tight vinyl body bag
- Comedy "duelling straitjacket" routine (original) live on stage
- Escape from an iron portable jail cell live on stage after being manacled.

There are even a few other bits too.

I posted the above to ask the question: "So, now that many have been critical of this raw footage of a real working escape artist which was not edited for public distribution, perhaps you will all kindly tell us just where we may see footage of any of you doing the exact same variety of escapes in one crack?"

As for Lee and Bigelow; well, ... Lee never got out of anything of mine and never even met me. If Bigelow wrote otherwise then there are two as opposed to one person out there telling things that are not possibly real.

My footage may be raw but at least I deal in facts, not fantasy.

Seems to be a lot of misinformation about Lee. I have not seen anything on him anywhere. Santini, could not agree more with what your saying. Keep escaping Steve!!!

I'm really not anxious to start all of this up again as it has been a little nicer here without all of the squabbling, but every so often a new person appears who seems to want to "stir up the pot" so to speak. It always seems to be someone with an obscure pen name and never anyone that anyone else knows. Now of course this may be innocent, and just what it seems to be, a new person with some new questions. On the other hand it could also be one of our "old friends" coming back under a new name looking to cause trouble. We now have a new member of the Café who goes by the name of fr-guy. He seems to be a big fan of Michael Lee who has been very conspicuously absent from this board for a while now. He also claims to have seen Mr. Lee performing a burning rope SJ escape on Halloween on CBS television. He has posted this on several threads on this Café. Interestingly enough no one else on this Café happened to catch this performance. No one seems to know fr-guy. We are a fairly small community here even though we span the US, the UK, Canada and Australia and I'm sure some other places I don't know. It seems like almost everyone here is known by someone.
I'm not saying that there couldn't be a genuine "new person" that we don't know. But we've had a lot of trouble makers on this board so some people are understandably suspicious. So fr-guy, Welcome to the Café and the escape board, how about a little background on your training and skill level. We all want to be your friend, but we don't want to be taken like we have in the past. You raise some interesting questions here that I am prepared to address.
First let me congratulate you on your advanced copy of Norm's new book "Apparatus Bellie" It's very interesting that you have recieved your copy already as even Shawn doesn't have them yet at the EARL store.
May I ask how you recieved you copy? None the less I was present here at the Café when Santini issued his blanket challenge to anyone who would care to attempt an escape from a specific pair of cuffs he had beed challenged with. NO ONE ACCEPTED THE CHALLENGE! Sometime later Michael Lee stated that he would attempt the handcuffs if Santini would agree to Lee's specific terms. Basically Santini issued an open challenge that no one accepted and then Lee issued a counter challenge that, as of yet, Santini has not responded to. Now Norm Bigelow, a man greatly respected in this art, and a man I consider to be my mentor, pointed out that Santini's original challenge was invalid due to the fact that the padlocks used to secure the device were not opened, but had remained closed. As a result, Norm declared that Michael Lee had defeated Santini's challenge, and was the victor.
Now far be it from me to contradict my teacher, and I know that Norm has his reasons for what he did, but I must say that they escape me and as far as I'm concerned, Michael Lee DIDN'T DEFEAT ANYTHING, FAIR OR SQUARE. He's never even seen these cuffs, and I have personally had them on my wrists and I seriously doubt that he could get out of them, no matter what tools or keys he had in his hands at the time. This is not a little league game that one team wins by forfieture because the other team doesn't show. If you are going to call yourself an escape artist, then I would imagine that to claim a win you would actually have to "ESCAPE" from something. Anyone here who knows me knows that I always make an extreme effort to remain neutral, and I have taken a lot of flak because of this in the past, but I have been silent about this for long enough. Santini is planning a trip to New York in the near future and perhaps this issue can be put to rest once and for all.
As far as the "Best of Santini" tape goes, I have seen this tape and I thought it was pretty good. I have seen Steve Baker's video, Norm's video, Manzini's video, among others. The big difference here is that Santini's tape was not offered for sale, but was distributed to friends of his to give them a look at some of his perfromance "raw footage".
I think it's unfair to compare this footage to the professionally produced, high budget escapes as seen in the Baker DVD. I have had the privelege of seeing Santini perform live before an audience and have also had the privelege of seeing Norm Bigelow, Mario Manzini, Bill Shirk, Dean Gunnarson, Michael Griffen, Mark Cannon, Shawn(X-treem)Ness, Thomas Solomon, Joe Fox, Thomas Blacke, James Peters and Cindini ,among others, all perform live. I have also assisted many of these Escape Artists in their performances. Interestingly enough, neither I nor anyone I know has EVER seen Michael Lee perform anything, nor does anyone even know what he looks like. In my humble opinion Steve Santini is "for real". He's a first rate Escape Artist and teacher of the art and certainly has a lot to offer in terms of knowledge and experience to anyone willing to learn. I will certainly be heading back to Canada next year for the Second Annual Escape Conference should Santini decide to hold it again. As far as "who is the best", as Mark Tripp has pointed out this is a ridiculous question and you might as well argue what style of food or music you like the best. I hope you are an actual new person fr-guy, and not just some old trouble maker hiding behind a new name. Lord knows we have enough of those here.
Best regards, Tony Parisi

Tony that was an honest post, good on you. To add a little info, when on my visit to the US a meeting was agreed that I should meet up with Mr Lee, despite exchanging phone numbers plus giving Michael full details of where and when I was staying, he failed to turn up or return voicemails left on his phone in fact I even contacted him upon my return to the UK to say how sad it was that no meeting resulted. I have heard nothing as yet in reply !
One must read into that as you wish.

Thanks Don and Kondini, hey Ken, on a side note I just got back from the "broken wand" ceremony that my SAM club holds every year on the anniversay of Houdini's passing at his gravesite. Someone found your card at the site, and I explained to them who you were. All good though, just in case your ears were ringing.

Michael lee got his advanced copy of Apparatus Bellie because I sent it to him. As to the cuff challenge Santini backed down and cheated and in real challenge escapes he would loose by default. I have covered this in Apparatus Bllie and I stand behind my position Santini could not meet Michael in a fair challenge. Steves whole proposition is to open the locks like he did and the news paper that made the cuffs says the padlocks were still locked. that's just plain fraud. Norm

Also I sent Shawn a copy of Appararus Bellie to sell and he can get all he wants, so I don't understand people not being able to get them.
If people really can't get them contact Janet but I can't imagine Shawn not selling them.

Since this is still going on....

The bar was handed out for inspection with locks. If it indeed unscrewed, the gentleman that tried it would have done it. Just like any mailbag the bar is not inspected with locks.

The Part that Norm missed is the fact that the nut is missing off the bar. It had to be unscrewed to remove the cuff. The press photos document this clearly.

Relocking is not an issue.

Hi Mike,

This is not the first time someone wrote a "book" and offered up a theory that simply is not plausible or logical.

Noted examples included:

-The Titanic being switched for her sister ship prior to the fateful maiden voyage.

- Elvis being alive and well after faking his own death.

- Kennedy being "hit" on orders from the CIA.

- The moon landings being faked in some Hollywood sound stage.

etc, etc, etc...

Despite poor research and numerous problems in reasoning and logic the authors of these sorts of books usually crank them out with just one purpose in mind.

Namely; making money.

I wish Norm great success with this current book and hope he has great financial gains from it.

It is just too bad that someone like Norm could be taken in or subscribe to this foolishness to such a degree that he would see fit to publish it let alone put his name to it.

One look in person at the actual cuffs would no doubt change ANYONE'S mind.

However, it does not seem to me that Norm is the kind of person to ever say he was wrong let alone sorry.

So, I guess this work will just have to be classed with such fine literarly efforts as the "National Enquirer" and other publications of the same irk.

I seriously hope no one bothers to waste thier money on it and insteads goes to the hardware store and spends the same cash on a hunk of rope or a length of chain and a padlock.

Things that are actually of use and that with which one can learn from and also grow in escapology with.

I wasn't going to mention this ever again and see how long I lasted. Having spent quite a while over the years with a steel rule and compass going over investigation photos and writing reports, it seems like an obvious conclusion, for the trained eye. The photos are each measured to thier own scale and standard calculations are made to change the compass.
No mystery there at all.

Kind of like the old two picture puzzles where you find the differences. It all came down to the missing nut to plainly and clearly document the chain of events. The witness statements are also recorded. The photos tell the whole story and exist as a matter of public record.

As for Mr Lee, he won nothing because he didn't show. He was defeated, the same way I defeated him in the ungaffed bridgejump challenge. He backed out and didn't show. No mystery there either. I can polygraph on it too.

He got beaten by a Newbie while everyone was at the convention this year. I promised him not to tell anyone, but he never kept his end of the bargain.

You know, the really interesting thing here is how this guy, who nobody knows, nobody has seen, never seems to be performing, and has duped and tried to dupe so many of us in the escape community, still manages to generate so many threads and posts on this board in a feeble attempt to give himself some sort of credibility . Norm has always tried to teach me the value of using controversy to promote your career. A concept well used even in Houdini's days. It seems that Mr. Lee has at least done his homework in this concept, but personally I think that this guy's 15 minutes of fame is just about up. I don't think that any of us here should give this guy any more attention and maybe he will just go away, once and for all. I am going to make a sincere effort NOT to make any more Michael Lee posts, and I hope that everyone else here will agree, and follow suit. Enough is enough already folks! Let's just let this whole thing go!

Perhaps he never did exist, and we were all duped all the way around.

At any rate Tony's right, its beating a dead horse now.
