I've read through a lot of the existing threads, but I can't quite find what I'm looking for.
I'm interested in buying Ultimate 3-Fly. I have heard a lot of great things about Todd Lassen's work, and I understand that he made Bob Kohler's sets, but I don't know if all of Kohler's sets were made by Lassen. Bottom line questions -- if I'm interested in getting a Lassen-made set, what is the best way to get one -- and does it really make a difference? Thanks. Nick
Let me explain. No, there is too much. Let me sum up.

The best way would be to contact Todd. And yes, there is a difference...Todd is the best!

Todd sales the gaff but not Bob's routine. The only way to get the routine is to buy both the gaff and routine from Bob, but I don't think he has them on the market any longer.
You can usually find a set (Routine and gaff) for sale here on the Café or on ebay. Best Joe

I'm not sure but I believe that
Kohler had Todd engineer the set and Todd made them for Bob. Since the routine is not Todd's routine, he cannot sell the routine and doesn't. He's probably able to sell the coins since he engineered the set and the set can be used for other routines. This is all a guess.

I have one of Todd's sets from Bob Kohler, and the set is fantastic. It can be used for any number of other effects and routines. Todd told me that Bob switched over to another maker after a number of sets, subsequently someone sent a set to him for repair, but that he could tell the set was not made by him, because of the obvious difference in quality. I have many of Todd's creations, many custom made, and all are exquisitely made (though I have had to wait a long time for some of them). Good luck -

Can you find the set on his website? What is it listed as?

Here is the deal, there has been a lot of threads deleted on this subject and am assuming this one will be as well. Todd Makes the gaff and BoB sells the gaff and routine together. If you feel you need Bobs routine you need to either buy a used copy of the one that bob sells or you can buy the coins from Todd and come up with your own routine. The gaff that Bob sells now is not Todds coins and I am not a hundred percent sure whose coins he is selling. So it all depends if you want Bobs routine, or want to create your own...

That would be exposure, by telling what the gaff used in U3F is. Buy the routine and you'll receive the correct gaff with it. |

Actually NOW I got interested in 3 Fly too..
Surfing Bob Kohlers site, didn't give any results re 3 Fly, appart from getting directed to Troy Hooser 's DVDs. I could though contact via email Bob Kohler asking if he still sell the gaff plus the routine, but aiming for the best quality, maybe the gaff he nOW sells is at least of slighly less quality? I don't fancy the coloured stuff they currently sell (chips), so I think I have to stay at Bob Kohlers version..also I don't se any reason re 3 Fly -which is performed at a slight distance, NOT to use a gaff, IF it makes the performance more deceptive.. Denis Behr's version is deceptive, so I presume he does use a gaff apart from the clever concealment he does use.. Hmm..I have to watch his clip again..

Kohler stopped selling U3F a little while ago.
Behr doesn't use a gaff, only an extra coin. I'd just wait for Townsend's book to come out before working on any VCA's.... but that's just me. |

Well Jonathan T. is kind of busy and quite some time might pass, before he finds time to finish his book
Also it is generally known, Jonathan Townsend worked out the basics, there have been quite a couple of variations out, luckily most of them crediting -as it SHOULD be- JT for the basic effect Here is a snipping from the *coinvention*: *************************************************** Chris Kenner started the discussion with a brief history of the effect: He was in NYC in the early 1980’s; he and Bob Kohler saw Jonathan Townsend perform “Visible Coins Across” which is a routine where Jonathan would hold three coins in a fan at his fingertips and one at a time they would travel to the other hand which was held in a palm up display. Jonathan’s handling utilized back clipping in the receiving hand. Whenever back clip work is used, it limits the effect to a few people that are typically close enough so that you can reach out and touch them. Chris changed the structure of the routine so that it could play for a larger audience by bringing the receiving hand up to chest level as well. This was the birth of the “Fingertip Coins Across” effect that Chris would publish which eventually would become known as “Three Fly”. *********************************** As mentioned, IF a gaff makes the effect more deceptive (I can't judge, as I never saw JT nor Bob Kohler, nor Chris Kenner doing it)in this case -I don't fancy gaffs in particular, on the contrary- I would prefer the use of a gaff for the *distance* reason mentioned...the coins normally aren't and shouldn't be handled by a spec. that routine 'normally' as I so far did se it, is a *showpiece*..

During a move and such I lost the routine tape that went with Bob's U3F. I did contact Bob regarding getting a replacement, but he no longer sells U3F and
didn't have any spare tapes. Sometime down the road he's planning on putting out a dvd with new ideas for the set, but that's it. Also, David Neighbors is supposedly coming out with a booklet on routines with the set. Tom |

I just received an e-mail from Bob this past week in response to an inquiry I made about U3F. His response was that an upgraded version is in the works with an all new instructional DVD. No definite release date but probably next spring.

Hopefully not stepping on Bob's toes here...the above post is accurate. Bob is currently looking at prototypes for an upgraded gaff set. He also wants to put out a comprehensive DVD but needs the time to get the various performers together to do the shoot.
Will be well worth it when it hits the market. I asked if it would be out by Christmas and I was encouraged to start a "wife is unaware" slush fund for early next year. |

I cannot see how Kohler can sell more U3F. It was marketed as an exclusive item with no more than 200 items sold. Hasn't he sold 200 yet ?

That topic has been debated many times. A reviewer mistakenly stated that he believed 200 would be the number produced. However, an ad or message or anything has ever been produced to vouch for that.
Besides...if Bob is marketing a new gaff, with new footage, and new ideas, then it is a new item which would not infringe on the old one. |
