I was just checking Hocus Pocus and found this item :
http://www.hocus-pocus.com/magicshop/pro......tem=4309 I found it interesting, but it does have an explanation on how the 3 memory tests. I used to perform some quick memory tests from Corinda 13 steps. But this effect is advertiserd as an ice-breaker or even encore. Anyone could post a comment about it? A short description of the 3 tests would be really appreciated Thanks in advance Juan D |

The ad itself doesn't say much. Anyone with a basic knowledge of mnemonics could memorize 50 postcards, how they look and what's written on them. I reckon there's more to this effect than a simulation of such a memorization.

Could someone please commment on the effect per se?
Is this the same from Mentalism Incorporated? |

This is a great routine by Chuck Hickock.
You have a set of postcards of all fifty states (not gimmicked in anyway), you shuffle the stack of cards then divide them into four small stacks that are handed out to four spectators. Someone is picked to be the test group and they hold onto their stack of states. A spectator points to any of the other stacks and you pick it up and say you will memorize it as quickly as possible. You go through the stack quickly and seemingly try to memorize it. Now any state from the test group is randomly put into the stack you just "memorized" and you turn around and are able to pick out the new state in that stack. Now another test: The other stacks are combined so that there is now about forty states in this stack. You go through them quickly and try to memorize all forty. Another state is randomly put in that stack from the the test group. You go through the new stack quickly and then as soon as you do it you ask for them to call out the state they put in. You hear that state and say something like, "South Dakota? Hmm, that's now number 21 right after Maine that's 20th and before Utah which is 22nd." The spectators count the stack of states and sure enough 20th is Maine, 21st is South Dakota and 22nd is Utah. It really proves you memorized them in order and quickly. The final test deals with saying that you've now looked at over forty states in the stack so you are going to try and figure out what states you haven't seen so you begin to call off all the states that haven't been used from the test group. It really plays big and it convinces people you have a remarkable memory. I've used it several times now and it gets some great reactions as you call off the states at the end. I highly recommend this. Oh, and the memory work is minimal. Greg

I saw Chuck perform this at his lecture. It's in his notes. It was probably my favorite thing he did besides his Magic Square. You could theoretically do the same thing with playing cards, but he comments that he doesn't think it's as strong. Anyways, it's probably worth checking out. It's pretty easy to do, just not my style.

Dear Mr Arce, Thanks a lot for your review on Postcard memory Demonstration, just what I was looking for
I was wondering if this effect as long as Hickock's magic square can be found in his Mentalism Incorporated Book. Also, can anyone make his own set of postcards (The one being sold uses the 50 states, but as I'm outside the US, I'd like to use a different thing). If you could confirm this, I'd really appreciate it Kindest Regards Juan D PS : I sent you a PM but your box if full |

I don't have the book in front of me to anwser the question about Mentalism Inc., but once you get his postcard effect you can probably do it with any type of postcards that have some sort of set to them.
For instance, you might find postcards that have to do with famous people, or postcards that are about tourist attractions in your country, etc... once you know how he set it up you can probably do your own system with those cards, but still do the exact presentation. Greg

Juan D, to answer your question. Yes, I think both the Magic Square and the Postcard effect can be found in his book. I know they are both in his lecture notes, and I think I remember him saying at his lecture that the book contains the five routines from the notes plus more.
By the way, you can't just buy any postcards for the effect. You need to make sure the cards have the same backs, because obviously if not the audience wouldn't think you were mind reading but instead just reading the backs of the cards. Caleb

The postcard effect is NOT in Chuck's book. He does include "Mega Memory Miracle," but the routine and handling are much different as it's based on Cassidy's memory routine.
CJMAGICMAN: That's not entirely true. The backs of the state postcards do have the names of each state on them, so they're different on both sides. That doesn't detract from the power of the routine at all. Postcards usually have photos/artworks on one side and tiny descriptive print on the other. Because you're standing a distance away, the participants won't think you're reading the backs unless, of course, you've stated at some point in your act that you have super eyesight.
