Just found this. It seems to be what the Air Force is trying to get money for research on. Check it out here Have fun.

They mentioned an author and his book, "The Physics of Star Trek" in the article.

I just want to mention how great a book it is, and I think everyone should go out and get a copy... it is a fantastic read.

Funny story, an aunt of mine is convinced that scientist have transported an apple from one room to another.(ie split it up and put it back together).

No articles, papers, or arguments I could bring her way would deter her from believing that she read that the experiment has happened and that the government is keeping it from us.

Very scary stuff!

I second the recommendation for the Physics of Star Trek, and for other related titles, something like More Physics of Star Trek. There is also the Physics of Christmas, awesome book, and one on the science behind Jurassic Park.

I believe that Teleportation of non-organic single atom material WILL be a reality in the not too distant future.
I don't think we will ever be able to transport organic material (especially living) without totally destroying it. I also don't think that we will be able to transport compounds without messing them up either.
To re-assemble single atom material ie: gold, silver and other pure elements would be ultimately easier due to the fact that the sequence of reassembly would not have to be in any particular order as long as the substance is not made into a particular form. Example: A gold statue of Venus may just be a blob of gold after transport.
A great security system could be developed so that if someone broke into a vault full of gold, the gold could be immediately transported to another secure location.
Just my Whaco thoughts at play here.

Here is one, but you have to translate it from German.

Thanks Muddy and Munger for the interesting links. But these experiments are not actually making the object travel only certain informative data which is cool and definitely a starting point, sort of like my shadow is only a representation of me but not actually me.

"I think it's quite clear that anything approximating teleportation of complex living beings, even bacteria, is so far away technologically that it's not really worth thinking about it," said IBM physicist Charles H. Bennett.

I'm sure glad that Edison and others didn't feel this way.
It wasn't that many decades ago that the idea of sending moving pictures with sound and color into our homes for our pleasure was nothing more than science fiction and not worth thinking about. And having a human being walking on the moon? RIDICULOUS idea, not "really worth thinking about."

If man did not dream and think of such silly ideas where would we be today?
Besides, even if teleportation will never be a possibility, plenty of useful knowledge can come out of researching such a silly thing.

Actually that was my understanding of what teleportation is ... something being dematerialized in one place and "recreated" in another ... no travel (in the sense of moving across a distance) involved ... instantaneous switch ...

Of course then we'll likely see the theory applied to quantum computers and data transfer long long before a living thing ... or even a tangible, visible object is teleported ... but it really is fascinating ...

Very good points you bring regarding what might seem silly in the present might be the norm in the future ...

...the quantum work (in which information apparently flows unincumbered by space) can probably also be leveraged as an "explanation" for how mentalism/mind reading works....for any of you who are scientists/engineers in your "day jobs" would be a wonderful fit.

In the midst of going through Conversations with Mind Readers again, and the discussion around if and how to explain what you do (and the different philosophies the top names in the business have) is fascinating....

Hey, I have that book too "The Physics of Star Trek".

In any case, I have a molecule transport device........it's called a car Smile

I like the idea of putting supposed psychics in teleportation devices to see what arrives on the other end.

Check this out...

excerpt.

"This study was tasked with the purpose of collecting information describing the teleportation of material objects, providing a description of teleportation as it occurs in physics, its theoretical and experimental status, and a projection of potential applications. The study also consisted of a search for teleportation phenomena occurring naturally or under laboratory conditions that can be assembled into a model describing the conditions required to accomplish the transfer of objects."
