Hi all.
Does anybody own the golden key effect? I have just ordered it and would like some honest feedback if you would be so kind. ie: Is it a good effect? Is it a strong effect? Is it believable? Gareth Hobson.

Is this a golden haunted key, or are you talking about the magic trick golden key? The one where the teeth can be moved up and down the shaft though they are welded on.

Gareth, have you done a search on this?
Mine just turned up several results from the "Good, Bad, Garbage" review forum. Cheers! |

Though I haven't actually performed the effect for a lay person, nor do I own it, I have played around with it in the shop.
To me the effect seemed obvious straight after I saw the Demo on magictricks.co.uk but I have heard the effect kills the spectators. It is also easy to perform though in my opinion a little pricey for what it is. I think the effect is very believable to most people, of course this is only what I have heard and may not be true. Considering how seldom it is seen a magician willing to tear down his own effects. They could all be lying

Is this the same as keneti-key (sp.)? If so, it is well made, but ... my only beef, is that it doesn't look like a real key. Because of this, I sold mine. But, with the proper presentation, this fact can be addressed. It just didn't seem to fit my current persona.

If you can get a genuine Kineti-Key from Viking, I think you'll be pleased with the quality of the workmanship.
As far as the strength of the effect goes, it really relies on your showmanship to elevate it beyond an intriguing puzzle. I was never able to present this one effectively (though it always fooled) whereas Sue-Anne has made a feature of it in her strolling magic performances.

I believe when I read my instructions for Kinetic Key by Viking it stated that Golden Key was a knock off from Viking.
I agree with Mr. Ellis. You'll be happy with Viking quality products. |

I believe you are confusing the effect with the Haunted Key StrangeMagick. Jordan, I'm not talking about the Haunted Key, as I do perdorm this all the time with a REAL key. I really don't like the look of the commercial "haunted key" even after aging it. Guess I'm a Bizarre purist, but I was referring to the Viking Keneti-Key JR. It has a seam at the top where the head connects. A real key wouldn't have this seam. I'm just REALLY picky about my props. For example, I wanted to use a watch as a pendulum in my seance. The spirit I was trying to contact was murdered in 1830. I searched long an hard for an old watch and found one from the 1850's, just to be as close as possible ... but that's just me. Dave |

Has anyone tried removing the rather "Las Vegas"gold pating off the key?
Perhaps it hides a more convincing steel or zinc bare metal? The gawdy gold plating does give a rather "glitzy" Las Vegas feel to it. If I were a spectator and a magicican showed me a trick with this amazing key that is finished in chrome gold (like NO key I had ever...EVER seen before), I might be a little suspicious of its "normal-ness"! LOL!!! Most keys of this type that I have ever seen have been bright steel at best if not a dull silver color. It just seems more naturalistic and less like a magician's "trick" key. That's just my style, not everyone goes for a realistic approach.

Not if you do it correctly. You will want to pratice this in front of the mirror a few times though. You should master it quickly.

I love Viking's Kineti-Key, Jr. and perform it often for people. The Golden Key is an inferior imposter but practical nevertheless. Both are small enough to carry in your pockets so you'll always ready to perform at a drop anywhere anytime. Like mentalism effects, they rely heavily on presentation and if presented correctly can appear to be a bizarre, examinable miracle. Personally, I'd purchase the first class original from Viking since they are priced relatively close unless you can get The Golden Key for a steal.

I have removed the finish with "Scotch-brite". It came off easily and revealed a nice, even steel colored metal beneath a rather cheap and thin gold coating.
I don't mind doing this as it is a ..."second generation" product (eh hem...) from Magic Makers.

Actually just beneath the silver metal is a copper layer used for plating conduction, so you'll have to dig deeper for the steel or do as I did and stain it grey-ish using some oxidising solution bought from a craft store. You could also try "cold gun-blue" from a gun/sporting/hunting goods store. This will only work on base metal, so you'll have to remove the gold plating first.
