I use Rowling-esque spells when doing my children's 'wizard' show. It lets me do creative things with combinations of Latin, French, German, etc.

I've done the same thing. I translated (thanks to BabelFish) a few basic words (fire, move, wood, etc.) into Latin. I then combine them into a simple phrase when doing an effect that involves it. The latin makes it similar enough to known words that it sounds real but archaic enough to add the right touch of atmosphere. When working with adults, if you make your voice more serious-sounding they won't make a connection to a Harry-Potter type of spell, it sounds more "authentic". At least, for me it's worked so far...

Spells from the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons roleplaying game were required to effect magic.
Some required a spoken prayer, chant or recital, others required body and/or limb movements and others material components. Some required two and even all of the above in order for the magic to take effect. |

Another good source for pure bizarrism is Arabic phrases from a copy of the Avon paperback "Necronomicon."

I pulled a can out of the bin and performed the trick - I didn't realise at the time but I was singing very quietly to mself while I was doing it. Terrific idea, Jax! But I am curious, what song were you singing? I mean, chanting an old celtic balad may have a different effect than say, chanting an AC/DC song . Just wondering. Eric

Actually I was expierimenting today with that as a matter of fact. I have discovered a melodic beat, People don't pick up on it if it is done right, and it looks spooky to boot.
I am just working on a way where I can take the card start humming, and let it go and it start spinning. Like the air beneath it is summoned by my voice, taking grasp of the card under my control. Oh so cool! This is a cool thing about magic! Muhahaha Your friend, ~Mayo

Well, "Shook Me All Night Long" wouldn't be inappropriate as you gently agitate the can ;-)
Actually it would. I think the trick though, overall, is to whisper. Somebody just whispering to themselves is creepy enough.

And then hold the can up to their ears and they hear a tinny voice still singing the spell song from inside the can. The talking teakettle returns in a new life!

I was under the impression that the incantation was the spoken part of the event.
What is the term for the entire ritual? Evocation? I thought spell was synonymous. Puzzled.

I use under the breath chants for most of my PK type effects. The chants makes the person slightly uncomfortable, while giving some some for the magic to slowly start working. When the item begins to nudge after a few minutes, try chanting a little more feverishly. Have you eyes roll back in your head. That is when the item begins to really move or fly. Pretty potent Juju.
