I recently watched Jay do the Hole Punched Card effect and I wondered if there was a way to do this without using any gimmicks. Any ideas?

I think there's no way to do it without a hole punch.lol
Hehe, unless you mean without the "gimmick", then I wouldn't be so sure. RedSponge |

R Paul Wilson has a version called 'Unholy Gathering'. I really like that version. I've never seen Jay's. (I didn't know he had one). Paul's version uses a gimmick that you make yourself. It's awesome. I've gotten a lot of good responses. It's on his video "Knock-em Dead" I also highly recommend that video also!

Jay's trick is called Public Transit. It is a very good version of the hole punch trick. It is in one of his two tricks manuscript. You can see it on Penguin web site . It is a shame that Penguin is the exclusive Jay Sankey item dealer as I won't buy from some one selling ripoff. What I mean is I know of this trick of Sankey but even though it seems very good I wouldn't buy it.

Michael Close has a great hole punch effect, but with a business card. It is called "The Pothole Trick".

Why does Penguin have such a bad reputation?
I like Public Transit because it doesn't require much sleight of hand and it can be examined in the end. That is my take on it.

Hollow is an excellent trick.

Hollow looks very magical, but I like PT because the spectator gets to keep a card with an actual hole in it, as opposed to just another signed card.

There are others with shotty practices as well... I better shut up. Do your part, and don't support rip-off artists. P.S. To stay on topic, I'm not sure that PT is accomplishable in the same sense without a hole punch. I can say this thoug, I have it, and it is very strong when you want it to be. Or it can be a neat-o thing you do, you choose. I like it.

Even though Penguin is doing all that, it's essentially Jay Sankey who suffers of it when you don't buy his stuff, not Penguin Magic.
I buy my decks from Penguin Magic, can't get them cheaper anywhere else (live in Norway, they ship for free). Feel free to PM me for my address if you wish to send me decks and get me off Penguin Magic Stand where your mouth is Hehehe

I like PenguinMagic because it gives you free instructional video for most of the tricks they sell. It's as good as a reference library as I can always go back to watch how the trick needs to be done. Jay personally demonstrates how to perform Public Transit at penguinmagic after I purchased it and it's a great punch hole effect. Although I still say practice so that you can produce a clean snapp sound when the card is turn over.

Thanks for the answer about Penguin.
I have performed PT and it gets good reactions. When you hand them the signed card with the hole in it they often hold it up to the light and try to move it. When that happens you know you've done your job well.

I like R Paul Wilson's hole punch trick on Knock 'Em Dead. TheFish727 asked him how it was done and he said it was not gimmicked so its pretty easy for magicians to figure it out. For lay audiences it is a very good trick.

Sorry munch1215, I did not say that is was un gimmicked, I said that the idea you had in mind was not correct

I came up with an idea with the same effect but I like my handling a little better than his. I never talked to him like you have, so I don't know exactly how it was done but I pretty much have the idea.
By the way, if anyone is interested in my version of the effect they can PM me. My version is basically like matrix with holes.
