Start with Strong Magic.....probally one of the greatest magic books of our time.....then work on to the card material. You'll get much more out of his cardwork if you go with SM first.

Many people have told me that the only good Ortiz book is The Annotated Erdnase...I have not bought any of his other books. That's not necessarily true, but it was what I was advised!

Darwin Ortiz At The Card Table and Cardshark represent a collection of some of the finest intermediate and advanced card routines to see light in our community in years. While many feel that Scams & Fantasies will not quite reach the lofty status of his earlier works, I feel it's like comparing gold to silver to pearls to rubies to diamonds. It is all fine material and a treasure for the serious student. Plenty of other stuff out there for you to learn though. Oh yea.....You must be kidding......you LOVE Ortiz!

I have also recently acquired 'Strong Magic' and it is fantastic and utterly absorbing. But then I think The Annotated Erdnase, At the Card Table and Scams and Phantasies, are among THE best books I own. Frankly, I think Darwin Ortiz is a card genius and easily one of the greatest magicians this century.

My first Darwin Ortiz book that I ever owned was Strong Magic. I have many magic books and I can honestly say that Strong Magic is my favorite magic book. I've turn into a Darwin Ortiz fanatic because of this book.
I now have Ortiz at the Card Table and this is also another great magic book. It seems that everything Darwin Ortiz has written has been great.

I personally do not recommend Strong Magic first for one simple reason; he refers to many effects in CardShark which, interestingly had not been released when Strong Magic came out... I did find it a bit frustrating to read about examples that you couldn't refer to. People will disagree with me but learn his routines and then understand the reasoning behind it.
I believe CardShark is his best work. Greater emphasis on plots while retaining the gambling flavour of At the Card Table... Unlike previous comments, I believe S&F to also be a great book. In many ways, the effects are more commercial and magical. It also reflects Ortiz's maturity as a writer and a creator. I just think that CardShark was more of a work of love and was generally more inspired and inspiring than his other trick books. To answer your questions, I would say the order should be: CardShark (read the afterthoughts sections; You will start getting exposed to the material in Stong Magic) Strong Magic (Good food for thought that will force you to question your magic) Scams & Fantasies and/or At the Card Table... (S&F is more commercial. ATCT is the foundation of Ortiz work. Both equivalent in value IMHO) |
