Good Morning Ian Rowland,
I actually didn't activate it, I had the dvd in the machine and was answering a call when it began to play.. I thought it was the main material but then realised it was another effect.. Very strong any card at any number.. J.B. |

Hi Gentlemen,
The effect will play after watching the final explanation.. You leave the dvd playing and it should play after a minute or two.. It will depend on what dvd player you have, but most seem to have seen it.. Marc
It's not goodbye, just see you later...

Hi,
watched the DVDs and think, they are excellent! A lot of fresh material. Anybody should be able to find some effects, he will be able to include into his repertoire. I have a question to the handling in the "Business Confidential" effect. But I cannot ask here in the open forum. So it would be nice of someone, who is familiar with this effect, to contact me via private message. I asked Marc directly via private message, but got no answer from him. Greetings from Germany, Olaf |

I received the DVDs the other night and have watched most of the effects. They're quite good. I never expect to truly be fooled by any mentalism these days , but one effect called "Free Call" absolutely fried me. I watched it three times in a row and couldn't for life of me figure out how he'd done it. Sure enough it was a brilliant solution. Not simple. But brilliant. In my opinion, this is the true gem of the collection.
I've read all of these quotes about the chair effect being "worth the price alone." I don't get it. Maybe it's because I'm not a working performer, but that effect just didn't do it for me. All of the envelope nonsense was too much. Even Spelmann and Nardi seem to admit that the envelopes are the clunky part of the routine, but seem to think that's okay. Ummm, the envelopes are the routine. And clunky is an understatement. I'm sorry marc, but pulling the envelopes out of the spectators hands to reveal the number inside looks just plain wrong and forced. Even with the multiple finales, for that reason, I really don't like this one. In fact one big complaint would be Spelmann's use of envelopes throughout the DVDs. He uses them in more than a few effects to very bad effect. I'm sorry but if you're going to reach into an envelope to reveal its contents, you really have to show the envelope empty. On more than a few occasions we're left unable to see what else is inside. And believe me, you, me, and everyone in the audience wants to know. I'd prefer to just have multiple outs. Well I could keep going, but I'll leave it at this. Spelmann has a nice, fresh set of DVDs. As good, if not better than any mentalism sets I've ever seen. To my fellow Americans, be careful. The exchange rate puts these DVDs at close to a whopping $200. I don't know if even the Jenna Jameson collection is worth that. Platt

She's a magician. It's one of the great secrets as to how she can get both her ankles behind her head at once.

I have the Jenna Jameson set and can say they are worth every penny..
On a serious note I hate to get envolved within debates or disagreements on these forums but there are simply some things that make me compelled to do so. We as a community are just to spoilt, so many effects, so many secrets. I own the Spellman DVDs and have not performed professionally for 12 years, however I can still appreciate the amount of workable effects in this set. I like Mr Rowland do feel that Marks performance is a little subdued at times but what are we buying these for? To sit back with a coffee and be entertained or see routines and thinking that provoke our own creativity. I no longer perform but do coach acts in terms of getting an act together, largely for the cruise ships. Marks dvds have amazing value for money for anyone who performs professionally. A couple of points to note: 1. You watched a lot of effects that would never be placed in a single show as already mentioned by Mark in an ealier post. 2. The envelopes used in One In Thousands and Prize Draw are normally crumpled up at the end of each performance and tossed to one side this was mentioned numerous times on the dvds. 3. The envelopes in Staple Gun Roulette are very fairly inverted and a single piece falls out, that fooled me as I thought the Guns were gimmicked. I was a professional performer in the days of 'Proper' Cabaret spots, a 15 minute spot was exactly that 15 minutes no more no less.. I had to cut out so much of the proving elements which I thought would effect the astonishment factor however it never did. 4. The Envelope in Last Man Standing is again inverted and a single card falls out, just like Kollosal Killer or Heirloom no one thinks you could possibly have an entire deck inside. The Chair Routine - One In Thousands was a real hit in Las Vegas for some of our arts finest practitioners, Read the post 'Mindvention Feedback Anyone?' The DVDs are not for everyone but for the working pro there is enough in there to warrent easily double the amount. If you wish to perform for your friends down at a bar then don't buy them.. I only wish that some of these effects were available to me when I performed. You also have to take in consideration that so many of the routines could be marketed seperately with fancy graphics and the odd prop and sell (which seems to be the trend at the moment,) As a past professional I know I could form an entire 20 to 30 minute act from these dvds alone, maybe not exactly as Mark has performed them but no one should do that anyway. Back in the day I would have been paid 150 pounds for a 30 minute show, these days people are getting anything from £500 and up into the thousands so is a £100 ($200) worth the price? Absolutely!.... Also watching Jenna Jameson DVDs will make you go blind, watching and learning some of Marks effects and ideas will make you money and increase the wow factor of your show. Is that worth $200 I certainly think so.. I put the One In Thousands routine on for my wife and she has seen far to much mentalism for a single human being, however she was of the opinion that the nice looking numbers on the backs of the chairs were gimmicked.. These dvds are exceptional value to the full time pro and those wishing to make the step into cabaret. The rouitnes are strong, the kickers very effective and judging from the comments of those who have seen Mark Spellman perform live this is material that clearly works for a paying audience but maybe not magicians who wish to watch a load of secrets they can do in social environments. There are few dvds where very little if anything has been held back, I applaud Mark for his generosity and look forward to more of his work. Jon Beetham |

Where can you get indutrial staplers from and for how much?
Can someone tell me abit more about stple roulette. Is it hard to do? Is it examinable? Can the spectators fire the guns? and finally what is this about an envelope involved in it. |

And the staple guns are examinable. But so what. No one's going to examining them. But the real problem is that the object is too foreign. I mean, with all the intricacies of the method, as a spectator, I'd just assume it's a gimmicked staple gun. When magi picks it up, he flips the secret switch and makes it shoot staples. Of course that's not how it's done, but it might as well be. Not a big fan of this one.

It doesn't take a genius to simply have another spectator fire the final gun as is mentioned in the explanations. Thus eliminating that very idea Platt.
No offence but I have heard what Banachek and Larry Becker have said about this very routine and I know who's thoughts I'd listen to more.. Lets see two of the most respected mentalists on the planet or some gentleman who doesn't even perform professionally.. Staple Gun roulette has a huge amount of potential whether you do it as Mark does or adapt it to you own style, his thinking behind the audience involvement makes this something any audience WILL care about as it is over their hands.. It would seem you are an expert in your own living room Platt? Jon Beetham |

Mr. Beetham, Has it occurred to you that a significant majority of those who bought these DVDs do not "even perform professionally"? For them, the opinions of "two of the most respected mentalists on the planet" are not actually that useful since their performing conditions (yes, in their living rooms or at the bar) are different to those of Banachek or Becker. You may not be a big fan of pluralism but people are entitled to their opinions, even when they are at odds with your own. I, too, have been a full-time-pro but I don't think it entitles me to belittle those people (and they are easily in the majority) who are keen magic enthusiasts in their spare time. Now that I no longer tour with a show, my magic interests and needs are different to what they were when I was a 'pro' and I appreciate the opinions of the Platts of the world if they are well thought-out and intelligently expressed. P.S. - Apologies for the smell; I've yet to rinse the vomit out of my mouth. |

I just happen to be tough on mentalism routines. And I've got news for you, the opinions that really matter are the ones that come from everyday Joes like me. Not people who are absorbed in the world of magic or mentalilsm. I'm a professional advertising writer. The ads I rave about and think are brilliant are far, far different than the ones the public seems to like. And clearly the public is the group I should be concerned about. So who's opinion is more important.- mine or some nobody sitting on his living couch? Without question it would be the guy sitting on his living couch. So.... as a person who's proudly far closer to a spectator than a creator, I wasn't impressed. Quite simply I can't relate to something as foreign as a staple gun. Nor can I relate to the ridiculously round about method of selecting them. As an everyday Joe, I ask: why doesn't the spectator just go up on stage and grab one? Cheers from the couch, Platt

I've watched only the first dvd and it was boring and far from being inspiring. I was shocked when Marc open the first DVD with an effect envolving a bag of candies (!!!). his performance is dull and tiring, and he came across very grayish. It has nothing to do with the audience, it's the stage persona. at some point I wanted to shout "stop talking and get on with the effect lad!!!". sorry, someone has to say that.
Nimrod , Israel p.s. I'll watch the others later. they are not easy to watch. p.p.s. on a different note, I've watched Osterlinde's ETMM and although I've found nothing new or exciting to me there, it's obviouse that Richard understands mentalism and knows how to deliver it. you can learn a lot from watching him perform, and lets face it: this is what mentalism is all about - PRESENTATION. |

All I can say gentlemen is that I have received some truly great comments from both Professionals and Hobbiests alike. But your comments are no less important to me as a performer. I will not lie to you and say It isn't demoralising when you are criticised so much.
The routines have worked for me and my intention was and still is that they can work for you. I would hope that you would inject your own personalities into any effects that are on the market that you decide to use. The routines I put on the sets are very personal things but I cannot be angry with your comments as anything that is released to the public is up for judgement and I respect your comments but feel you could have been a little more constructive. There are some strong pieces on the set that I still use to this day, Prize Draw, One In Thousands, In The Shadow Of Geller, Untouched, From Beyond The Grave etc. I do believe I am an easy target as I am unknown, I work for UK audiences, my natural style is quite forceful but equally quite charming with a hint of sarcasm, releasing these DVDs was about the routines, not a show case for my performance style. Banachek, Chuck Hikock, Max Maven, Mark Strivings, Alain Nu, Bob Cassidy saw me work in my natural style in Vegas and gave me some great feedback along with over a hundred or so hobbiests. I realise you can only judge me on what you have seen on the DVDs but please remember they are instructional DVDs not a show. With respect for your comments and interest in your works.. I look forward to your DVDs and how I may learn from them.. To all who have given constructive critcism both good and bad I thank you for your time and wish you well.. See you again some day.. M.S.
It's not goodbye, just see you later...

I really liked the dvds.
Many great routines and ideas and enough space to adapt them to your own performing style. It contains also some strong effects. These dvds are stuffed with ideas that will lead you to create knew routines, and that's what I really liked in these dvds, there's something different in them from a lot of things I've red or watched those days. I'll try to do a full review in some times. Just a little something to ad: Marc is sharing a lot of his ideas with us through these dvds and you can see he's doing it really sincerly (regarding his posts on the Café), so I find it a bit a shame when people are shooting at someone like some do now with Mark. The same happened here with Luke Jermay and you know what followed. So you may not like the dvd set, but when you express it, please, do it smoothly and with respect. |
