Just had to pass this along to anyone looking for an alternative way for destroying envelopes without burning them. At Office Depot, I found a hand held, battery operated paper shredder. It's made by InnoDesk and is only $14.99. It runs on 4 AA batteries and will shred up to 3 layers thick. The slot for the paper is the perfect size for the typical burned bill envelope. The total unit is only 12 inches long and 2 inches thick so it will fit in my stand up show case very easily. As you can tell, I'm pretty excited about this find. I've been looking for an alternative to burning the envelopes for some time, but all I could find was AC powered shredders. Now, there's no need to look for an electrical outlet to plug in a paper shredder, and best of all, it's portable and affordable. The website on the back of the package is http://www.innodesk.com.
Good luck and have fun shredding.... Ken |

I use that shredder Ken. It is an excellent alternative to the fire.

Especially when working outdoors when it's windy when I'm working close to the audience. I found a hand cranked shredder a year ago at a dollar store that works okay, but being battery operated, this works at a touch of a button. Can't wait to try it out in the next show.

Regan,
How long have you had this shredder? Have you had any problems with it jamming? How long have the batteries lasted for you? Let me know. For the price, I bought two in case one gets dropped or otherwise disappears. Thanks, Ken |

Ken,
I have only had mine for about 2 months. I have used it about 4 or 5 times so it's a little premature to really give it a review. So far, no jams or problems and the original batteries are still cranking. Mine has a reverse, so that should help if it does jam. I have thought about buying a back-up also. It is perfect and I love it so far. Regan

Well good heavens, Regan, buy a back-up. I've been burned by not doing so too many times.
How's the battery life, by the way? Or, more importantly, is it easy to tell when they're about to die, so you don't get caught mid-performance? |

I used it over the weekend at a comedy club here in Detroit, and it went over very well. Lots of laughs, especially when I reversed the envelope going through the shredder after it had already started going through, making sure the owner didn't want to change his mind. I had the second I bought one in my case, just in case it jammed or the battery died mid shredding. I plan on changing the batteries to fresh ones soon and I'll comment back how long they lasted after they start to die.
As far as telling if they are about to die, listening to it when it shreds, the motor will sound like it's laboring more and the envelope will go through slower, provided the thickness of the paper is consistent. Ken |

Thanks Ken. You are probably correct about the audible warning. It is easy to hear the difference when the motor is being worked harder.

I've been using a paper shredder for about six years now and I "jerry-rigged" one so I only use the top part and it shreds into a little compartment that's about as thick as the shredder itself. I can take it apart and dump out what appears to be the remnants of the envelope along with some confetti that looks like it might have been a bill. It fits in my case nicely, too.
I like the Innodesk shredder, but after the envelope is shred, there should be some green in the remains. I think you have to have a fake bill in the envelope so the shred pieces will appear as if their bill was in it. Not a big deal, but attention to detail is the essence of showmanship. yours, Scott Wells

Great idea Scott, I'll try the bit of green paper in each envelope and see the reaction from the lender of the bill.

I agree. I made up some fake bills just for that reason.
Scott, great idea with the modification. I would love to see how you did it. Regan

Hmmm, let me check on that. But I believe that the jpg files may be too large and might take a long time to load. Try it again and wait a long time to see if they load. If you get red crosses, then you're right and it won't load. Then I'll have to do something else. Let me know.
yours, Scott

In the top left corner of each picture square ther is a little box with a red square, green circle, blue triangle. At the bottom of the page it says "done" so I don't think it will come up.

Regan,
Be patient until the picture pops up or a red cross appears. The colorful symbols you see are indicating that a picture is being generated.

Scott,
I got the pics to load! Thanks so much for going to all that trouble to post that link and then, on top of that, resize the pics. I like the way you modified the shredder. Very good idea! Regan
