Hi,

I am hoping to use doves in my act, but they are so impractical to keep where I live, and they seem so much harder to house than other bird breeds such as budgies, canaries, etc.

Has any one else done a bird act with any other breeds of bird, with still using sleeve loads, harnesses, pockets etc.?

Are doves used because they come back on stage, or because they sit still in holders, or will other breeds be just as good to perform with?

I am hoping to do a sleeve load and toss production, so would it be best to do this with doves, because they come back better, or would other breeds be just as good at coming back and not flying off?

What about using parrots, or are they just too big to hide!

Thanks!

Hi Sam,
No parrots have been used in several acts by man well known magicians such as Brett Daniels and most notibly the Hammners. However an act like that requires A LOT of funding and dedication to house these animals and housing an act like, I believe, would be MUCH harder than housing a few doves where you live. If you're just starting there's nothing that says you can't start out with like two doves, and really they're not that hard to keep. They require as much deditaction as any other animal would. I'm not sure what you had in mind, but for you I'd recommend just starting out with two doves or maybe fantail pigeons. These are like doves, but a little smarter and bigger and look pretty much the same: All white. If you can, try getting in touch with Scott Penrose in London. I know he's one of England's top bird magicians. He may be able to shed some light for you too. Good luck,

Hi Dan,

Thanks you your reply.

The thing is, to keep even just two doves I have heard that you need to have a pretty big cage (3-4 feet long each side), and I don't really have anywhere to keep them apart from my bedroom, which would mean that I have to get an air purifier, and also there isn't any room in my bedroom to keep them!

I have heard that budgies, canaries, etc. are much easier to keep. They can be kept easily in the bedroom, with a much smaller cage than doves need.

Has anyone else had experience with any other breeds, and do they come back on stage (like I mentioned with a sleeve toss?)?
Any other information would be great!

Thanks for the help Dan (also when will Extreme Dove Magic be up and running?!)

Yes Parakeets can be kept in a smaller cage, but they are much smarter than doves and will require more attention. Parakeets are small parrots and will become very wild and untame unless you spent a lot of time with them. It is a good idea to keep them around a lot of people (ie put the cage in the living room) because they can become very bored very easily.
