Many performers are not naturally gifted with very funny, well-timed presentations and speaking and rely on visual effects, comedy, etc.
Need your help as to good visual comedy magic. I produce an 8 ft wand from hat which goes over very well--any other ideas welcome!! Thank you. |

You didn't mention which age group you perform for?
The comedy is the illusion that you make. Any prop can do! I have used invisible fleas. I also think that the attitude of the performer really helps make something funny become absolutely hysterical. Remember, it isn't the effect that makes the magician; it is the magician that creates the effect. Boz |

I don't perform kids' shows but I do occasionaly perform family shows with more adults than young children.
The majority of my work is stage/nightclub/cabaret as I work with a top hypnotist in a combined fire/illusion/hypnosis show. We do about 140 shows a year mainly in larger halls, theatres, etc. There's plenty of comedy in our hypnosis so I just need a few visual gags to music during the opening 20 mins, etc. Thanks again. |

If you are worried about being funny, I'm afraid buying funny routines probably isn't the best way to go.
It's easy to rely on existing props and routines to use a crutch and not put the extra effort into learning about comedy and presentation. Learning these skills does take a while but it is worth it in the end. |

There's a lot of comedy potential for Outsmoking invented by Ron Jackson. I jsut constructed the gimmick & think it's a great piece of magic with built in comic potential.

I'd rather just pick up the shorts, gather up some of the rope, and skulk away sheepishly, but here's a couple of lines that you might be able to finish off with: - Remember kids, floss daily .. and thoroughly - Reminder to self: next time, take the laundry OFF the line before putting it on Another example of great visual comedy is Steve Martin's Flydini. |

I have been getting surprising laughs with Barry Mitchell's Spring Water Bottle with the surprise topper.
You might also try playing a game we used in Comedy Sportz, a improvisational group. It is called object freeze. You take an object that is not funny in itself, and use it in a way suggested i.e. by its shape, color or completely opposite of it's original function. This is one "game" used in the T.V. show "Whose line is it anyway? Be safe, warm and creative. Harris

One of the funniest visual comedy magic acts I have ever seen was the incredible "Kohl and company". I saw their act many years ago where they were the closing act on the final night of a major magic convention.
Their entire act was beautifully choreographed to music, and together with their hilarious presentation absolutely broke me up! Ray

Hello
This is one of my favourite topics because I've been working on my visual comedy magic act for many many years now. I think the problem with a lot of 'magician's is that they want 'instant' comedy. Trust me, going out and buying a 'comedy' magic trick doesn't make you a comedy magician or make you a funny person. The amount of times I've seen 'magician's perform effects such as Jumbo sidekick and get nothing out of it is endless. Performing comedy is an art, and one of the most important aspects is knowing who you are, your character etc. Timing is something you cannot teach .. you only get by doing thousands of shows over a period of many years and working the trenches. Kohl and Co. are a great example of a comedy act that has spent years working on their act and performing it over and over, not by purchasing tricks that will make them funny. If you study them you'll see facial expressions, movement and 'theatre' all rolled in to one. One idea is to actually take an effect you really like and go to a director or professional writer and spend time making that trick your routine. Spend time on it and work it over and over until it's YOURS. My suggestion if you want to do 'comedy' magic or magic that is suppossed to be funny, then rather than buy tricks, study the great comedy acts and look at how they script their acts. Not just magicians but look at old vaudeville acts, black and white movie comedians such as Chaplin, Keaton etc. Just some random thoughts ... http://www.chaplinmagic.com
