Anyone got one of these, what are they like in shows, also are they expensive to keep?

Ringnecks work fine for magic and they are usually the cheapest of doves. Unfortunately all doves costs about the same to keep. But even that is cheaper than a dog or cat.
I've certainly used them on stage. I just like the whites better. I even used to put the eggs from whites under ringnecks so I could keep using the white doves. Ringnecks make great parents for white doves. Leap in! Bob Magic By Sander |

Ringnecks work just as well as white doves, and while aesthetically some might prefer white (as Bob said he does) I can vouch that at a birthday show, the kids reaction to a real bird, regardless of color, is the same.

What size is the ring neck? Is that about the size of java doves or smaller. How is it compare to Diamond doves? Does anyone use Diamond dove in the show? My son is still small so I need to find small bird for him to work with. It looks funny when he is small but his chest is huge.

Knmagic,
Ringnecks are not only the same size but will breed with the Java doves. (Same species) Diamond doves are another species. I don't anyone who has ever used them but I get the question several times a year. There are other people thinking the way you are. My real exposure to diamond doves was that when we commercially raised parakeets, we used diamond doves to eat the seed on the floor. (Seed on the floor attracted mice and then the mice would also eat baby birds.) I started my kids using hampsters instead of doves. Would that work for you? Some hampsters are really showbiz hams! Some really enjoy it. Good Luck! Bob Magic By Sander |

Thank you Bob for your suggestion and insight. I am just afraid hamster will not sit still until production time. Do you produce it via dove pocket or apparatus?
Thank you Ken |

Ken,
Use the Don Allan Comedy Egg Can (MAK). The rascal can't escape! Kids love it. Our hampsters would stay in the glass for kids to have a look. (Don't give a hamster anything he can chew!) Think about it. The hard part is making a blown egg. Enjoy! Bob Magic By Sander |

Thank you Bob, my son keeps asking me to get him a hampster but I never did. Maybe I should now. Are there many kinds of hamster or just one? (Please excuse my ignorance, just never really look at that animal).
Thanks Ken |

Ken,
As far as I know, all hamsters are just varmints that kids like. My kids really enjoyed them. (Don't get into the breeding business! You'll have to quit magic just to build hamster quarters!) Over the years we had three favorites: a spotted male named Bo, Peaches a spotted female, and Mud Flaps, a brown female that seemed to have a new litter every morning. I do recommend starting with a juvenile rather than an adult hamster. Their lifespan appears to be about four years. I think an expensive one would be $5.00. Good luck! Bob Magic By Sander |

Bob,
Thank you for your generous advise. Will get one for sure. Do you have a preference between male and female? Which one you think is better to use for trick? Thanks Ken |

Bo was the favorite. He was a male. He would hide safely in his toilet paper roller core to be carried around. That way he wasn't touched by human (and/or kid) hands but could be seen and he could spy on the humans. It was only made available to him when he was ready to go to work. We put it in his terrarium and he would just climb right in. I think he liked the attention. Most don't.
In the glass he would hang his front legs over the top but not jump out. He reminded me of the man in a barrel with no clothes. Bo really worked cheaply too! (My kids cost me a fortune!) Enjoy! Post us a photo when the show gets on the road. Bob Magic By Sander |

Thanks Bob. I bet you love Bo a lot. I sure will post a pic when my son ready for the show. Now I go look for a hamster. I am sure the hamster is cheap but the accessory will be a lot.

Hi Ken,
I just bought a hamster a few months ago. I was told that the "Brown Bear hampster" is the most docile and friendly. Mine sure seems to be. You're right, the hamster didn't cost much, but you can really get into some money if you start buying the tunnels and all the toys that you can get for them. But it is fun to watch them. And he is so cute. The kids at the birthday parties love him. I was also told that they like to be alone. Mom thought it would get lonely, but the pet store said they prefer it that way. That's the only pet we have that we don't have 2 of. Mom is always afraid that our animals will get lonely. So we ended up with a kind of a zoo at home. Dakota Rose

Hi Rose,
Thanks for the input. "Brown Bear hampster" sound good too. I think hampster is really like ot be alone based on the fact that most of the people I know have only one. Maybe they are afraid of the breeding. |
