Ok having never delved too far down the escape route I am happy to admit that I will soon be jumping in the deep end.
I have devised an effect which I am going to use as a closer to my act which will be happening in December. The effect is basicaly this I am cuffed, chained and all the ther usual restraints. I am then sealed inside two card board boxes. The boxes are lifted and raise off of the ground. All this time I am being locked up by and exectutioner type character, who then gets a sledge hammer and smashes up the boxs to reveal I have escaped. The executioner then pulls off his mask to reveal it is me. I have just smashed myself up!! Ok this was my first idea. But in a sense the effect is more of a magic effect than an escape one. So what is the netter effect. The first described one. Or having the boxes smashed then me appearing at the back of the room. Or having a cloth raised and then dropped and I am stood infront of the still sealed boxes. Also I would welcome anyother ideas for the ending of the effect, which you feel are better or more apt to the performance. Secondly what abotu music. Should I have music during the escape or silence? If music what kind of music. Please HELP ME!!!

Great idea! I like the first one. I wouldn´t mind the magic effect, you have still escaped the chains and the audience will get that.
Anyway, I belive classical mighty music such as Carmina Burana or something similar would fit perfectly.

Ok the effect will be on a stage and I have a pretty tight budget....unfortunatly. lol
My style is hard to explain but I'll try. The persona I try to transmit is one of a rather dark suave character while at the same time being slightly lighthearted. So I am a light hearted character but at the same time having a slightly gothic and dark serious air about me. I am also greatly insired by the likes of Frank Sinatra type characters, of the 50's and the victorian period. I realy like the appeal of these eras, and it rubs off on my character somewhat. Hope this helps you a little, and doesn't confuse you too much.

It does Both but. what one do you prefer I might suggest appearing back on the stage have you tred doing any of them to see what will work and what other ones might take more time.

All of the effects I have mentioned work and can be done. Appearing at the back of the room is actualy the easiest one. Though I like all of them equaly and the others realy aren't that much harder to pull off.

Ok then appear at the back of the room. when you have the boxes lifted why not have them hanging up or even accidently drop. then let your assts rush in like it was a accident then run up on stage as to help or reveal yourself meaning that you appeared

All the reveals are fine (why not try all of them, in order to suit different venues and to keep the routine fresh for anyone who sees it more than once), the only problem I see with that is that cardboard boxes are not strong enough to take the weight of a fully grown performer, so hoisting them up will only serve to demonstrate you're no longer in there, thereby killing the tension of them being smashed up.
The best solution I can think of is to build a table base instead; it'll involve a bit of building (though I'd think the same about whatever rig you plan to hoist up the boxes with, which would have to at least look strong enough to take more than your bodyweight), but has the advantage that the box is raised off the ground from the outset and your executioner dude can smash away to his heart's content without getting tangled up in ropes and cables. |

Ok instead of a cardboard box why not use a packing crate and lock/tie it up.

Well maybe I wasn't completly clear. The boxes will be raised off of the ground by about 3ft and will be resting on a sort of table, nothing fancy just a crude table, with four legs. I like the idea of it getting knocked off and then me running up to streighten it, hmmmmmmmmmmm

Rather than smash up the cardboard why not set them on fire and burn yourself to death. Only to reveal yourself as your executioner? Just a little thought and it does give a reason for having cardboard boxes rather than wooden ones.

Arrgh, no! It's enough of a headache getting venue managers to let you use fireeating torches, can you imagine the problems of getting one to let you set fire to two cardboard boxes in their theatre? Even outdoors with full insurance and fire safety crew in place, I wouldn't want to burn that much cardboard, it's too light and the cinders (if not the whole freakin' box) would be flying all over the place. Not to mention the abuse on your poor old cuffs and chains, still trapped in the inferno as you make good your escape.
I have a couple of fire escapes drawn up in my notebook that I'd love to do one day, but make no mistake, they will never come close to leaving that stage until I'm at a level where I can assemble a qualified team good enough to do it as safely as possible. Fire's just not something you disrespect, I know that from juggling and fireeating experience. |

I had first thought about using fire to destroy the boxs but due to all of the reasons already mentioned I chose to drop that idea. Plus even if I could make t 100% safe to pull off by using fire and I did have fire saftey crews and medic teams their is no way in hell that I would get permission to set a fire on the stage.

Why not water down the boxes. which should make them easier to come apart.

I don't fully understand what you just said Donster. Do you mean easier to smash up. If so to water them down do you mean way pryer to performance, or just before so that I am performing with damp boxes.

Water should make them More Soggy. Easier to Take it Apart. Break/Smash it up how ever you want it taken apart on stage. you might also want to duct tape the ends closed to.
