I am wondering about a track that I saw years ago. Someone folded a piece of paper and a dollar bill. The bill was inside the paper, but it was sticking out so it was visible the whole time. Paperclips held the paper/bill together. The magican then penetrated the paper/bill several times in the fold with a pencil.
When the paper was folded out the bill was without any holes. Probably not a very good explanation.... Does anybody know this trick? What is the name? It is in a book? I don't know if I would have liked the trick as much now as I did then, but it just came to my mind. Anybody? Thanx! Stig |

Hi there Stig!
I might be totally out of track here but I`ll try to help anyway Could this trick be a version of Misled? (just an idea) Otherwise it could be the good old Pencil through bill. Here is a link and check it out for yourself http://magic.about.com/library/tricks/bltrick80a.htm Best Regards Ziga |

It could also be a variation on a trick by Mike Close called Rubik's Dollar. In this trick, a playing card is folded over a dollar, a toothpick is placed through the playing card and the center of the dollar, then the playing card and toothpick are moved all around the dollar. The toothpick is taken out, everything is unfolded and placed in the spectator's hands.

This can also be done with out gimmicking the bill. I'm not sure where to find it, but I'm sure someone on this board does. Jim Pace showed a nice version at a lecture recently. The bill is folded along with a napkin. The spec pushes the pen through the bill/napkin and pulls it out. Then the napkin is showed to have a hole but the bill is unharmed. Its a very simple version that works well. I'm not sure where you can find it but hopefully someone here will.

It can also be done with a sugar packet instead of the napkin so you get the nice sprinkling of the sugar to be sure that the bill was ripped.

Stig,
There is a trick called Puncture which is in Karl Fulves Self Working Coin Magic on page 90 which sounds like the trick you described . It also gives reference to its origin. Chappelly |

Al Cohen marketed my version in the late '80's, called "Bill Buster" - if you look closely, you'll notice that the typed instructions were printed on my Commodore 64 dot-matrix printer. I just saw one at Denny & Lee's last month that he'd found in his basement, so I know they're still floating around. Al's original version was done one way, and I came up with what I thought was the secret, which turned out to be a slight improvement, so they re-did it using "my" method ("my" is in quotes because I make absolutely no claim to having originated anything whatsoever, but rather I came up with a method for the trick that was ultimately used in the marketed product). I sure do miss Al's Magic Shop!

Stig, the link that Dolphin gave you was the correct method except the slit should be on the round seal just above where the link shows you. Making the slit in the seal will do a better job of hiding it. Also you do not need paper clips. The whole thing is just held in your hand.
It is a really good trick. The slit in the bill can even be done by ripping it just prior to performing. You do not want a bill that is to new or old as they will not hide the slit as well. |

Allan - your suggestion was the method I came up with for the "improved" Bill Buster - the original gaffe on that version was near the top of the bill and when I tried to guess how it was done, the I came up with the seal as being a way to show much more of the bill. If you have the old directions, you'll see my silly illustrations along with the Commodore 64 typeface. I honestly don't know, though, how many other people came up with the same seal idea - mine was 1984, but again, I was probably one of many, and it just happened to be the one that was marketed at the time. The reason I liked this method was that if I used a crisp bill, the slit would close at the end of the trick and I could hand out the bill and no one ever discovered how I did it.

Thanx guys!
Vinny folds the bill so it's easy to make the slit with your bare hands in his version. I guess that can be done without anybody noticing with a little practice. I need to find out where the best places for the slit are on Norwegian bills! |
