I need help finding the right animal to put into my show as an opener. I don't want a bird of any kind as I don't like the risk factor. I already use a rabbit at the end. I am looking for something that can be hidden in a large dove pan before the show starts that won't make much noise.
Any suggestions? |

Thanks Darcy!
I want something that won't freak any little kids but also something that will get their attention. I have tried doves in the past and also a farret. The doves flew away (even with clipped wings) and the ferret was just too squirmy. I must have something that will remain quiet for 5-10 minutes before the show in a dive pan and then also for the remainder of the show. Does anyone use a hamster? I think they have a very short life span don't they? |

I used to own a Degu. What is a Degu?
Degus Octodon degus Size: 6 inches body length with a tail about 6 inches long, weighing between 6 and 11 ounces Housing: Large aquarium (30+ gallons) or metal wire mesh cage with solid bottom, at least 3 feet long by 2 feet tall by 1 foot deep Food: In the wild they eat bulbs, tubers and bark. In captivity they can be fed a mix of chinchilla pellets and guinea pig pellets, sweet potatoes, carrots, dandelion greens, timothy hay and fresh green alfalfa. Must not be fed foods containing sugar and limited amounts of food containing starch or fat. Lifespan: 7 to 10 years Special Needs/Habits: Active during the day. Needs a dust bath 2 to 3 times a week. An 11-inch exercise wheel with a solid running surface should be provided. PICS |

Even with clipped wings birds can fly. Clipping does not prevent flight, it just makes it a bit harder to do so. If your birds fly away, you need to work with them to get them comfortable with you. Any animal taken to a new environment will be a little skittish. Working with ALL animals takes work. If you're not willing to put in the work, it's not worth doing. I had a parakeet that went nuts every time I held him...only through work did I get the bird to stay put. As a result I have a bird that is comfortable with me.

Thanks for all of the suggestions! I may get another dove and work with it for several months before putting it in the show.

I use my ball python in a dove pan. It coils up and sits there quietly until time to be produced. It is actually more popular than my doves. The kids and parents always want to get their pictures taken with the snake. They are very calm and easy to work with in my opinion. Just remember to keep them warm and not to have them out in a cold area for an extended period of time.
That's my opinion and its worked for me. Chad ps. Also, when you pull out the snake and it uncoils it seems impossible that it could fit in the pan! |
