Blaine bought a brand new deck of cards. He mixed them a couple of times told my friend to think of any card, my friend did and blaine said here take the cards and cut he cut and blaine said turn over the card you cut to and it was the thought of card ( My friend was holding the deck before Blaine said to think of a card)

I belive we need more threads like this one - really useful!!!
To lavenir: If you have a experience to share, please don't hesitate to tell us, but when you post on a forum like this you will have to add more to the story than: " HE IS GREAT IN PERSON AND HAS CHOPS." Well, that's what I think. Jack.

My hats off to David Blaine. He really has rejuvenated a lot of interest into magic which is a great thing ….. especially after the days of the masked magician. I’m not a big fan of his stunts as I think the two are disctinct. But none the less, he certainly attracts a lot of attention which inspires a lot of people. I can't imagine it is easy to develop such a sedated persona into a popular personailty.

Blaine does stunts because Houdini did stunts. That's his idol. I am not a fan of Mr Blaine and I don't find his stunts entertaining, or newsworthy. It amazes me how many people I have run into that mention his name and think he is amazing. I always inquire, as I am REALLY curious WHAT they found so amazing. Usually they give me some embellished perspective to what ACTUALLY happend, their recollection of the facts are warped to make it seem even more magical that it REALLY was. Then they mention the levitation, you know the POST EDITED one. I am not a Mr Blaine fan, but I do own his DVD. I wanted to study the man, the "magic", just to see if I could put my finger on what he was doing RIGHT. Here are some observations...
1.) At the end of every trick, he stood silently, and just let them react. 2.) He encouraged false facts, like "How high did I levitate"? (as he held his hands 12 inches apart). 3.) He used stooges to make it look more impromtu. 4.) He brought magic back into millions of living rooms that had been void of any intimate magic for MANY MANY years!! Worlds Greatest Magic was fun, and entertaining. But audiences didn't feel it was personal. Large stages with big props? They expect a levitation! Copperfield fizzled. Kids that are in school today have never seen a Copperfield special, or are too young to remember. The magic was fun, but the 10 minutes of dancing to see a 5 second illusion was, well, was as equally entertaining as the Donny and Marie Show. Then comes along Mr Blaine. He walked into a void that needed walking into. He brought magic back into the living rooms of America, and most "kids" feel connected to him becuase he didn't use the large props, or the 10 minute dance routine... he did "in your face" magic as old and as commercial as it might have been. His target is the lay audience, which outnumbers us entertainers 700,000 to 1. They have never seen a DL, or a card trick that wasn't 3 rows of 7. They never imagined a thread coming out of his skin, or levitating on the street, away from the magic stage where they expect it to happen. Mr Blaine is an easy target for us magicians that are not on national TV. I'll bet a large percentage of you are actually much better at magic than Mr Blaine...but as all businessmen and businesswomen know, its not the product, it's the marketing that will determine if you are successful or not. Blaine got the marketing. No copy of Blaine will ever share that stage. The networks and American television audiences are waiting to see what is next. They like Blaine, because he was personable, and mysterious, and blew them away with commercial tricks. |

Muzicman, I think your comments and observations are outstanding. My hat is off to anyone that can inspire people to discover magic. David Blaine's sucess benefits us all and offers us the opportunity to present all of the variety and innovation that magic offers.

Muzicman,
You hit the nail on the head, great observation of the sucess of David Blaine. We are all in "Show-business" Many magicians understand the "SHOW" part but don't get the "BUSINESS" part. Later,Don |

For those paying attention to the only actual trick mentioned in this thread, it sounds not unlike Vernon's 'the trick that cannot be explained,' n'est-ce pas?
There truly is nothing new under the sun. Still, definitely a sign of performing skill to perform it so well. Obviously, the performance was a success, which is the whole point. I applaud Blaine for what he has accomplished. sincerely, tiberius magus |

You clarified what many of us have been wondering about. But I was curious about what you stated about DC. I was wondering if you could elaborate on that a little more. Do you feel that Copperfield is "finished?" Or perhaps, just passe to todays younger audiences? I am also interested in why you feel that way.
The difficult must become easy, the easy beautiful and the beautiful magical.

Can we all just get off the Blaine topic, what about cellini, gazzo and other performers who are street performers.... real performers who work for hats

I hear that he does some cool tricks, like that thought of card cut thing, but the thing is that as a spectator they don't remember the entire trick, they only remember the parts that stick to their head, not the sutelties that the performer must accomplish

I say "Copperfield Fizzled" because years ago he was the most recognized name in magic. His face and name was on TV and nearly once a year, there was a special with all new illusions ands stories. That was then, this is now. Copperfield is still very much into magic and performing. But his specials are gone and kids today have never seen his magic unless they see him live. Mr Blaine has taken over that spotlight on the national TV. I am not saying he deserves it, I'm just saying he is there and Copperfield isn't. With that perspective, I made the comment "Copperfield Fizzled"
