I like to perform the shell game on close friends and family especially as I am just beginning. Once I pull it off they want to try it on me. Well as you may know this proves to be difficult for them since the can not keep the pea under the cup. I want to just tell them it is tricky and it just takes practice but I was wondering if any one else runs into this and what they do.

Also if a different pea is swapped out (maybe a harder or slippery one) would that stay under better?

Thank you <><

Yes, buy the "Perfect Pea" set from http://www.schoolforscoundrels.com

They come with a few hard peas that are an exact match, and they do not come out of the shell.

As many in the Café know I use a close up mat and a soft sponge pea for the shell game...

The shell game is very much like the cups and balls. it is not to much the props but the routine is most important.

For the cups and balls you can use the best most expensive set or tea cups, flower pots and even clear drinking glasses with paper rolled around them like Malini did.

The loads can be fruit or large balls or even live chicks like Galli Galli and Paul Rosini.

The shells can use a spit ball, a rubber pea or a soft sponge pea... Use shells - Thimbles - Sea Shells or a set of Vernet Plastic shells. Or get a fine set like the copper set from the school four scoundrels...

But like the cups it is the routine and the magician doing it that is the most important part...

My routine can be seen at my web site below. Good luck in your search for your own routine... Have fun and experment and find what fits you the performer!

Whit Hayden, when leaving the shells in view at trade shows, rather than be nervous about someone learning the secret, would switch out the pea and let them satisfy their curiosity. Once they "know" the pea stays put, it makes the routine that much stronger.

Katmandu says he's new at it and performing for friends and family. In that situation, it's better to switch out and let them try it. They're going to anyway, that's what family members do. They tend to see it as a "challenge" not a show.

Glenn, I've only started working with shells and really enjoyed your video clips. I particularly liked the ending with the pea under the glass. I had to watch it a couple of times because I kept focusing on the shells. (Hmmm was I supposed to?)

Thanks for sharing these.

Thanks Catbacker I spent quite a few years doing it. I started with the shells about 1967 or 68...

I do them in almost every close up show and if performed in a nice way it goes over very well with the audience.
