Ron Wilson and several other respected readers recommend honing one's tarot-reading skills at psychic fairs (the high volume provides plenty of intensive practice, the audience is receptive, and the money is agreeable). My question is this: is there a good online directory of these events that covers the Chicago area? I tried a Web search (which I'm usually good at), but came up empty.

Blair Robertson wrote a book on this... it's tough finding a copy but worth every penny if you can.
The best way to get in on this kind of thing is to check with local bookstores and curios and find out when they are having their next event. You might also check with Whole Life Monthly publications, Llewlynn (sp) Press, and other such groups who produce events across the country. Check with Circle Network News and PagaNet News... they should have listings as well. Best of luck!

Usually they like to spell that "faire," like the Ren Faire folks. You might get more hits with that spelling. But the best thing to do is to go to the local metaphysical stores. They'll have all the info you need. A lot of times, these stores are where the fairs are held. Here in San Francisco, finding a Psychic Faire is never a problem.

Jim, why does that not surprise me? Darmoe, thank you very much for the helpful suggestions. I'll get right on 'em.

Necromancer try St. Augustine, or Augustine's spiritual shop on Ashland Avenue, Sanctuary Crystals near Harlem and 130th, and Practical Magic south of Orland Park. They have local publications, and you can usually find when and how to contact faires.
I would recommend Sanctuary Crystals; they have metaphysical lectures and psychic faires every other day. try http://sanctuarycrystals.com/ . I also have a few contacts, but I am in AZ so I don't have their numbers right now.. |

Quote: May I suggest that you set up your own "tea-room" group? I did this years ago and had a lot of fun, worked hard at it, and made money! I simply advertised for psychics of all kinds, filtered them into what I wanted to present. and then went looking for venues, usually providing the group at no cost to them, just a couple of perks, like a meal and enough room. I used a ticket method, where the "readee" would buy a ticket to a specific reader. When that reader got the ticket he/she would do the reading, and at the end of the presentation, the reader would cash in their tickets and get paid. We had many spots that were weekly, and some, like private parties that were on a one-shot basis. For the parties all was the same, except we also charged a fee to appear. In most club appearances, we got a lot of press, from the venue, and an enormous amount of "word of mouth."

There is so much money to be made in this stuff! Makes me almost want to go non-legit!

Non-legit?!? You are sounding more like a magician and Randii lover? IS that correct?

Paul,
I can't say I follow him whole heartedly, but I do feel bad pulling a John Edward(s) like stunt. Most of my mentalism and spiritualistic magic is performed in front of an audience, who I HOPE know's that I am performing mentalism, and not actually talking to my dead spirit guide. Though I have thought about doning some crystals, hugging some trees, and preaching new age religions to make some money. But I find it's not for me. |

That's fine to take that stance but to call
"believers" "non-legit" is a whole different story especially when you take into account "readers" that believe in what they are doing. They are not frauds or con artists but are doing what they believe is real so who is anyone else to say otherwise? You calling them non-legit is most certainly pulling a "Randii". I have met an aquaintance, who is a "witch", he's a great guy, and he believes in what he's doing. After talking to him, he knows what he's doing is interpreting general facts from cards and trying to fit those facts into peoples lives. Basically, I think this is what every reader thinks, and is trying to sell, a dramatic scam, or theatre production. Possibly filling a void in their life which needs to be filled with dillusions of grandure.
I have to admit, I fall right into that position of power from my readings as well. Though I have to try and not attribute it to supernatural abilities. And yes, I'm a JREF member! |

I disagree Dr. Z.
Most readers I know honestly believe they have some "gift". It appears to me, though, that they are simply unaware that they are just excellent cold readers. They may be filling a void, but they truly believe in what they are doing. Mark |

Hi. All the info so far is bout American venues. Any UK feedback? I'm interested in trying this type of work. ANY feedback at all would be helpful. I live in the North West. Merseyside. I have been to a few fairs a few years ago and there were hardly any 'clients' to be seen,

I live down in Suffolk, which I know is no good to you Teejay, but I've noticed that a couple of venues have started advertising psychic fairs in recent months.
I'm still at a a very early formative stage in my reading work so I'm far more interested in being the subject of as many readings as possible than in giving my own. (Just helps me know that what I'm presenting is hitting the right notes with the subject.) Check the local press for adverts and I'm sure there must be some trade magazines or websites that can help with events in your area. |

Paul Alberstat,
You seem to have a bone to pick. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but Dr. Zodiac never called the believers non-legit. His statement was that if he went out and started peddling his mentalist skills as the real thing, HE would be non-legit, since he knows what he's doing is cold reading. Also, the last time I ordered a book by Richard Webster from "Misdirections" (Which is in San Francisco.) the man taking the order commented that during every psychic fair large numbers of the "psychics" visit the shop to buy books on cold reading. I also know amateurs who read the tarot and believe in the cards or in their gift, and I do not attempt to "pull a Randii." But in the world of professionals and 900 numbers, these people are making a claim and charging for it. I'm curious as to your reasoning, why should no one challenge the legitimacy of their claims? - Rob |

(One told me that I would win the 'pools when I was 45. I was 52 at the time. Etc, etc). In a one on one reading, it would be hard to be objective. How do you assess if they are doing a good job? I mean, have they made a few lucky guesses out of a few dozen attempts? Are they skillfully working with your feedback? Are they using common sense and logic to fine tune their readings? Do they have an awareness of the human state? If you want to be good, you have to model/copy good workers. You may be better spending your money on the excellent books that are recommended on this forum. When you have a good idea of how a 'skilled' reader works, then you'll have more ideas on what you should be looking for at the psychic fairs. |

I have too many "wiccan" friends who believe that the tarot card readings they perform are from the "gods", and that they are very accurate. Even after I point out that they are using prior knowledge and generalized symbolism to fit the readings to someone's current life stage. This is where the problem lies, "fitting" it into someone's life. If the tarot were so powerful, wouldn't it tell us we were going to win the lottery; or our loved one was going to die? Some may argue that it does, but it doesn't in those specific terms. Once again; they are general meanings that could mean change, death, rebirth, etc. It's cold reading, and I feel the readers have some knowledge of what they're doing. But, I also believe ignorance is bliss; to some extent.
