Tom,
Why don't you get your customers to shape modelling putty around their thumb and send it to you in a rigid box or something like a lid seal tupperware type container. It is hassle but if you want a TT like this its worth it. Hope that helps (you probably have thought of this already) cheers Mark

Not to take anything from Tom's wonderful work...
Just to note that Keith Lack of Arlen Studio is offering a similar service here. |

Your creation looks excellent Tom.
However, before you set up shop to mass produce these, you might want to talk to Keith Arlen Lack of Arlen Studio in Redding California. Here's a contact point for you: http://www.arlenstudio.com/ Thanks - Ron |

Just checked out Arlenstudio web site
http://www.arlenstudio.com/new_page_16.htm They will create a custom thumb tip for $100. This is a big differance in price when you consider the exchange rate. Dont get me wrong Tom your work looks great and if I was still living in the UK I would use you.

Thanks again everyone.
I don't really plan on "mass producing" these (I do understand what you mean though Ron). As you can appreciate they are time consuming and each is individually hand made. Any Elite TT I do will be on a commission basis. I know of Keiths work and I wouldn't want to create any kind of hard feelings or conflict in terms of his commercial output so I am keeping my work on a very personal one-to-one basis. That is the nature of the way I work and the way I feel confident turning out these items to a quality I am happy with. I will be arranging a method of casting peoples thumbs from afar to yeild the best possible detail and accuracy achievable today. You know...I put the TT online as a curio for the most part and to show something I was genuinely pleased with and proud of. I have been awe struck by the respose and interest so far. Thank you everyone for your kind words and interest and I'm sure you will end up with some treasured and bespoke custom magic....I only hope people will understand if I have to stop production for a couple of days to do the odd werewolf animatronic, old age make up or severed head! LOL!

Sounds like you have an excellent approach to your work Tom. I can appreciate what will probably be a win/win combination for your clients and yourself.
Next time I need a severed head, I'll ring you up! Good luck. |

I just went and looked at Arlen studio and IMHO Tom's looks a lot better. Tom, would you make me one? What is the exchange rate now? How much would it cost? BTW, isn't competition a good thing? If you can make something better than someone else, go for it! Neither of you invented the wheel(tt), you both just want to improve it. There should be no hard feelings, its just business.

Thanks guys, I appreciate your compliments.

I have also added Sanada gimmicks, false fingers and third hand gimmicks to the Elite 'slate', all with the same finish quality.
I will be adding photos of them to the site next week. Posted: Dec 11, 2004 7:38am ------------------------------------------------------------- I'm gonna' be greedy and add another post (I sure wish one could delete a post or edit them!). Owing to the needs of so many international clients, I will be creating "Generic Elites". These will be quality castings of real thumbs in a range of sizes to suit many people. "Generics" will have the same quality of realistic, translucent finish and will be matched to the individuals skin tones using supplied colour charts and photographs. The "Generic Elite" will also be offered at a lower price. I will, of course, still be providing the full custom "Elite TT" product for the perfectionist. I already have a number orders from top professionals on the books so please contact me soon if time is an issue. I'll stop hogging this thread now. Please check the website for updated photos and product lines. Elite TTs website tomlauten@hotmail.com

Any "ball park" projection on the cost of the generics?

Not as of yet, I have some lab work to do this coming week and I should be able to arrive at a cost.
I will keep the site updated, so book mark it and check back for latest news and images.

Yeah do keep us posted on this generic version.
My Thumb is identical to the 'thumbs up' thumb tips! same size and shape...but not colour...so if there is something along these line in development I am very interested! In Magic Steve Dela |

Thanks, Tom. I would prefer a custom made TT, but I think the back and forth shipping costs would just be too high.

Without doubt the best looking TT I'v seen so far,
but Tom I just wonder if you have done works with your custom TT yet? You know in and out of pockets, vanished cig's, changed bills etc.. Does the paint and quality last many performances? -e-
...As long as i`m not a world-champion at anything, the great reactions of doin` magic will do just fine.....

Like anything it can be damaged but the colour I use is VERY tough, It acts more like a stain than a top coat of paint.
Even IF (and I mean if) you were to take a scratch out of it, the plastic used is intrinsically coloured so the basic tone would show through as a neutral flesh colour. Hope that helps
